Schools can hire only teachers who are licensed, or about to be licensed, for the grade band and subject they are filling. A principal or district HR screener therefore checks certification before reading anything else, and this template puts a Certification and Endorsements block right after a three-line summary. The state, certificate level, grade band and subject endorsements each get their own prompt, because a lapsed area or a missing endorsement is exactly what the screener is looking for.

Experience follows, with each job headed by school, grade levels and subjects, then bullets that ask for class size, teaching approach and student growth measured the way the school measured it. Education sits above skills here, unlike most templates, because teaching degrees, student teaching and graduate credits affect both licensure and where a district places you on its pay schedule.

Every bracket is a prompt: replace it with your own detail and delete what does not apply. The teacher resume example shows the same sections completed by a middle school teacher, and the Faculty template is a design option for the same content.

How to fill in each section

  1. Summary: certified, grade band, one practice

Start with the word *certified* and your grade band, since that phrase decides which pile you land in. The second sentence names a practice you actually use every week, described plainly enough that a parent would understand it. Close with the school or program you are applying to and one detail you learned about it. A summary that could be sent to any school reads like one, and principals notice.

  2. Certification and Endorsements: the first screen

Write the certificate exactly as your state issues it, with the level and the year it runs to. Put endorsements on their own line, because a principal filling an ESL or special education vacancy searches for those words. If you are certified in another state, say so and add *reciprocity application in progress* when that is true. Candidates on an alternative route list the program and the provisional license it grants. The placement under the summary answers the question before the reader asks it.

  3. Experience: grades, students, growth

Head each role with the grades and subject so a reader sees fit before reading bullets. Class size, number of sections and the mix of learners give context that *taught math* cannot. For growth, use the school's own measure and name it, so a principal knows how to read the claim. Credit co-teachers when a result was shared. One bullet for work outside class, such as coaching or a professional learning community, shows you will be a colleague to the building, not only to your room.

  4. Education: above skills for a reason

Teaching is one of the few fields where education stays near the top for a whole career. A master's degree or graduate credits can move you on a district's pay schedule, and the program shows where you trained. Put the highest degree first. New teachers add the student teaching placement, with grade and school, to the degree line; experienced teachers can drop it once they have a few years in their own classroom.

  5. Skills: methods by name

Name the methods and programs a district has adopted rather than general virtues. If the posting mentions a reading curriculum, a math program or a behavior framework you have used, list it by its name. The data line should say which assessment platforms you have used and how you used them in planning. Keep each line to five or six items; principals tend to ask about every one in the interview.

Questions about the teacher resume template

Where should I put my teaching certificate on my resume?

In two places: the headline, as *State Certified* with your grade band, and the Certification and Endorsements block under the summary with full details. A screener sees it without scrolling, and an HR officer can verify it from the second mention.

What if my certification is pending or from another state?

Say exactly where it stands: the state and certificate you hold, then a line such as *Ohio certificate pending, expected June 2027*, or the reciprocity step you are on. Districts regularly hire on a pending license when the date is clear, and leaving it vague can stall an application.

How should a substitute or paraprofessional use this template?

Use the certification block for a substitute license or paraprofessional credential and any exams passed. In experience, give the schools and grades you covered, how often, and any long-term assignments where you planned instruction yourself. A long-term sub position is real teaching experience; describe it that way.

Should I include a teaching philosophy on my resume?

Not as a paragraph. Districts that want one ask for it separately, often as an essay question on the application. The practice sentence in your summary and your experience bullets show your approach in action, which reads stronger than a statement of beliefs.

Is it free?

Yes. The Word files and the Google Docs copy are free to download, edit and use for any application. There is no signup and no email.

Will it read correctly in an applicant tracking system?

The layout is one column with standard headings and real text: no tables, text boxes, icons, columns or images, which are the parts parsers most often misread. Keep it that way as you edit.

Word or Google Docs?

Use whichever you edit in. The Word file opens in Microsoft Word, Pages and LibreOffice. The Google Docs link asks you to make a copy in your own Drive; the original stays blank for the next person. Send the posting the format it asks for, usually .docx or PDF.
