Civil Engineer CV Example (Australia)

Civil engineering managers in Australia read a CV the way they review a drawing set: credentials first, then scope, then the details. Put your registration status (CPEng, NER, RPEQ in Queensland) where it is seen immediately, then describe projects by type, size and your role on them. The software you design in and the standards you work to come next, because they decide whether you can contribute from the first week.

The Sample CV below is for a Civil Engineer with seven years in road, drainage and subdivision design for a consultancy and a regional council in Queensland, now registered as an RPEQ. Each project bullet names the work (stormwater, pavements, water and sewer, subdivisions), its value, and a result such as approval on the first submission, construction costs saved or a program held.

Tailor it to the discipline in the advert. Transport roles want Austroads and TMR standards; water roles want hydrology and WSUD; structural roles want analysis and the Australian Standards; councils and state agencies want approvals, community consultation and selection criteria answered. Move the most comparable project up and match the software named, usually 12d or Civil 3D. The US counterpart of this page is the civil engineer resume example, written for American firms on Letter paper; the project manager CV example for Australia shows the path many engineers take toward managing delivery.

How an Australian CV differs

A civil engineer's CV in Australia leads with registration, because in Queensland it is the law. The Professional Engineers Act requires an RPEQ to carry out or supervise professional engineering services in the state, and Victoria now registers engineers too, so an advert for a Brisbane role screens for RPEQ before it reads a project. Everywhere else the mark is Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) through Engineers Australia and a place on the National Engineering Register. The standards are Austroads, the state road authority's and the Australian Standards, not AASHTO; the software is 12d Model as often as Civil 3D; and councils and state agencies ask for a statement against selection criteria with a two to three page A4 CV and referees named at the end.

For a civil engineer in Australia

  1. RPEQ in Queensland, CPEng everywhere

Write RPEQ with the discipline and the year if you hold it, and CPEng and NER with the year. If you are on the chartered pathway, say the stage; many employers sponsor the final assessment.

  2. Accredited degree and skills assessment

Give the degree, the university and the year, and that it is Washington Accord accredited. An engineer qualified overseas gives the Engineers Australia migration skills assessment outcome as well.

  3. State standards and the client

Name the road authority (TMR, Transport for NSW, DTP, Main Roads WA) and the council whose standards you designed to. Australian recruiters place you by them.

  4. Selection criteria for councils and agencies

A council or state agency vacancy asks for a statement against criteria such as demonstrated experience in stormwater design. Write a paragraph per criterion with a specific project and keep the CV as the evidence.

  5. Referees named and site tickets

Name two referees with role and phone, usually your current team leader and a previous one. List the White Card and any site inductions; construction phase work needs them.

  6. Right to work and clearances

Say citizen, permanent resident or the visa in one line, and note any security clearance for defence or critical infrastructure projects.

Every CV in Australia

A4 paper
Australia prints on A4. A Letter-sized PDF prints short on A4 and tells a recruiter the CV came from a US template.
Two to three pages
Australian CVs run longer than UK ones: two pages is normal and three is accepted for experienced applicants. One page suits a first job.
No photo
No photo, date of birth or marital status. Australian employers do not expect them, and anti-discrimination law makes most prefer not to see them.
Dates as DD/MM/YYYY
Day first where a full date appears, month and year for each role. The US month-first order reads wrong to an Australian recruiter.
Australian English
Australian English follows British spelling: organise, programme, centre, licence, specialise.
Suburb and state, not a street address
"Parramatta, NSW" is enough on the contact line. A full address is not expected, and the US-style ZIP line never is.

How the CV changes with experience

The same civil engineer CV, written at three levels: a profile and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first post in the title

Civil engineering graduate with an accredited honours degree, a vacation placement in subdivision design and a final-year project on stormwater. Accurate in 12d and keen to work on site. Australian citizen.

  • Drafted earthworks and services plans for three subdivision stages during a twelve-week vacation placement.
  • Designed a detention basin for a final-year project sponsored by a regional council.
  • Assisted with site inspections and daily diaries on a road reconstruction project.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Civil Engineer with four years designing transport improvements for a Sydney consultancy, working toward CPEng through the Engineers Australia chartered pathway.

  • Design intersection and road upgrades for council and Transport for NSW clients.
  • Prepare drawings, specifications and estimates for tender packages.
  • Coordinate with utility owners during design to avoid conflicts in construction.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programmes

Senior Civil Engineer and team leader with fifteen years leading infrastructure design teams and client relationships across Queensland and New South Wales, RPEQ and CPEng.

  • Lead a civil team of twelve engineers and designers with annual fees of A$5 million.
  • Certify designs as RPEQ on public and private projects up to A$80 million.
  • Win and manage work with council, state agency and developer clients.

Skills to put on the civil engineer CV

Hard skills

Design software such as 12d Model or Civil 3D
Most Australian consultancies design in 12d and many councils in Civil 3D, and adverts list one as a requirement.
Stormwater and WSUD
Nearly every civil project in Australia involves water, and water-sensitive urban design is written into the planning schemes.
Austroads, TMR and the Australian Standards
Knowing the state road authority's standards and the relevant Australian Standards means designs get approved faster.
Drawings and specifications
Clean, buildable drawings reduce construction problems and claims.
Construction phase services
Answering RFIs and inspecting works shows you understand how a design gets built.
Cost estimating
Councils and developers depend on reliable estimates for budgets and tenders.

Soft skills

Technical writing
Engineering reports and development applications must be clear to a council assessor who has forty of them on the desk.
Working with contractors
A good relationship on site resolves a conflict in a morning rather than in a delay claim.
Community and council communication
Many projects require explaining a design to residents and councillors, and the panel asks for an example.

Mistakes that cost civil engineer interviews

  1. Registration status hidden

Whether you are RPEQ, CPEng or on the pathway changes which roles you can hold. Put it after your name and in a registration section with the year.

  2. Projects without scope

Give each project a type, size or value and your role. Designed drainage says little; designed stormwater for a 38-hectare estate says a lot.

  3. Software only

12d and Civil 3D are expected. Show what you designed with them and what happened: approvals on first submission, costs saved, programs held.

  4. Ignoring construction

Field experience is valued. Include inspections, RFIs and problems you solved during construction, and the tickets that let you on site.

  5. A US-style page with PE and AASHTO

A Professional Engineer licence, AASHTO, a ZIP line and American spelling tell an Australian manager the CV came from somewhere else. Use RPEQ or CPEng, Austroads, Australian spelling and two to three pages of A4.

Questions about the civil engineer CV

Where should I put RPEQ or CPEng on a civil engineering CV?

After your name in the header and in a registration section with the discipline and the year. If you are on the chartered pathway, note the stage and the expected assessment date.

Do I need RPEQ to work as a civil engineer in Queensland?

Yes, to carry out or supervise professional engineering services without direct supervision from an RPEQ. Graduate and design engineers under supervision do not need it, but adverts for anything above that level will ask.

How do I describe projects on a civil engineering CV?

For each project give the type, size or value, your role and a result, such as first-submission approval or savings from a design change.

Should I include a project list?

For experienced engineers, a short project list on the last page helps, especially for council and state agency applications that ask for it. Keep the main CV focused on your strongest projects.

What software should a civil engineer list?

The design and analysis tools you use, such as 12d Model, Civil 3D, DRAINS, TUFLOW or HEC-RAS, matching the ones in the advert where true.

How long should a civil engineering CV be in Australia?

Two pages for a graduate and two to three for an experienced engineer with major projects. Paste the advert into Resume Master and it rewrites the CV against it in about two minutes.
