Mechanical Engineer CV Example (Australia)

Mechanical Engineers in Australia are hired in large numbers by the resources sector, by processing plants and by building services consultancies, and the engineering manager reading your CV wants to know three things early: the kind of plant you have worked on, the standards and systems you work to, and where you are on the Engineers Australia pathway. For a mine site or a processing plant, they also want your roster, your site inductions and whether you have worked FIFO before.

The Sample CV below is for a Mechanical Engineer with eight years in fixed plant maintenance and reliability, first at a mineral processing plant in the Pilbara on a FIFO roster and now at an alumina refinery near Bunbury. Its bullets show the work a maintenance manager is measured on: availability of critical equipment, root cause analysis after failures, shutdown planning and execution, maintenance strategies in the computerised maintenance system, and safety in design and change management.

Tailor it to the employer. An operating mine or refinery wants reliability, shutdowns and the CMMS; an EPCM consultancy wants design to Australian Standards, calculations and drawings; a building services firm wants HVAC, hydraulics and the National Construction Code; a defence contractor wants configuration control and a clearance. The US counterpart of this page is the mechanical engineer resume example, written for American manufacturers on a Letter page with a PE licence track; the Kernel template puts an Australian engineer's technical skills and project list where a hiring manager looks first.

Updated . The person and employers in this Sample CV are fictional. Written for applicants in Australia; the page for applicants in the US is the mechanical engineer resume example.

How an Australian CV differs

An Australian Mechanical Engineer's CV is longer and more project-detailed than the American resume this page pairs with, and it replaces the US licence track with the Engineers Australia pathway. Expect two to three pages of A4, often with a short project list or appendix for consulting roles. Show your membership grade, any Chartered status or progress towards it, and the state registration you hold, along with roster history, site inductions and tickets for operational roles.

For a mechanical engineer in Australia

  1. Engineers Australia status

Give your grade (Graduate, MIEAust, CPEng, Fellow) and, if you are working towards Chartered, say so plainly. Many senior roles ask for CPEng or eligibility for it.

  2. State registration and NER

Queensland and Victoria require registration as a Professional Engineer for some work, and NSW for building design. List any registration and the National Engineering Register if you hold it.

  3. Standards by number

Name the Australian Standards you design or maintain to, such as AS 4343 and AS 3788 for pressure equipment, AS 4024 for machinery safety or AS 1668 for ventilation. It shows you can sign off work.

  4. Roster, site and inductions

For mining and processing roles, give your roster (8 and 6, 2 and 1), whether it was FIFO or residential, and your inductions and tickets. Recruiters screen on them.

  5. Plant and equipment, specifically

Say which equipment you know: crushers, mills, conveyors, slurry pumps, heat exchangers, chillers. The engineering manager is matching you to the plant they run.

  6. Projects for consulting roles

Consultancies want a project list with the client type, the value band and your role. Keep it on a separate page or a short appendix so the CV stays readable.

Every CV in Australia

A4 paper
Australia prints on A4. A Letter-sized PDF prints short on A4 and tells a recruiter the CV came from a US template.
Two to three pages
Australian CVs run longer than UK ones: two pages is normal and three is accepted for experienced applicants. One page suits a first job.
No photo
No photo, date of birth or marital status. Australian employers do not expect them, and anti-discrimination law makes most prefer not to see them.
Dates as DD/MM/YYYY
Day first where a full date appears, month and year for each role. The US month-first order reads wrong to an Australian recruiter.
Australian English
Australian English follows British spelling: organise, programme, centre, licence, specialise.
Suburb and state, not a street address
"Parramatta, NSW" is enough on the contact line. A full address is not expected, and the US-style ZIP line never is.

How the CV changes with experience

The same mechanical engineer CV, written at three levels: a profile and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first post in the title

Graduate Mechanical Engineer with a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and twelve weeks of vacation work at a processing plant, Engineers Australia graduate member, ready for a graduate program in resources or building services.

  • Completed a vacation placement in a gold processing plant's maintenance team, writing up pump inspection results for the reliability engineer.
  • Led the design of a small conveyor transfer chute for a final-year project, with calculations to the relevant Australian Standard.
  • Captain of the university's Formula SAE suspension team.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Mechanical Engineer with six years in a Sydney building services consultancy, designing HVAC and hydraulics for commercial and health projects.

  • Design mechanical services for office towers and hospital refurbishments to the National Construction Code and AS 1668.
  • Produce load calculations, schematics and specifications, and review shop drawings during construction.
  • Lead the mechanical design on a mid-size hospital ward refurbishment from concept to commissioning.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programmes

Principal Mechanical Engineer and CPEng with fifteen years in resources, leading the mechanical discipline on studies and capital projects for processing plants.

  • Lead a team of eight mechanical engineers and designers across feasibility studies and detailed design.
  • Act as the discipline's technical authority, signing off design reports and vendor packages.
  • Registered on the National Engineering Register and as a Professional Engineer in Queensland.

Skills to put on the mechanical engineer CV

Hard skills

Reliability and maintenance strategy
Operating sites lose money on every hour of unplanned downtime, so engineers who change strategies to real failure modes are in demand.
Root cause analysis
Repeat failures on critical plant are a standing agenda item at every maintenance meeting, and a structured RCA closes them.
Shutdown planning
Major shutdowns are the biggest spend in a maintenance year, and engineers who can scope and run them are moved onto the critical work.
Australian Standards and pressure equipment
Pressure equipment, lifting and structural work must meet the relevant AS, and naming them shows you can sign off modifications.
CMMS such as SAP PM
Most large sites run their maintenance in SAP PM or a similar system, and engineers who can write strategies in it save the planners time.
Design and drafting tools
Even maintenance engineers specify parts and check drawings, and AutoCAD, SolidWorks or Inventor speeds up every modification.

Soft skills

Working with tradespeople
Fitters and supervisors know the plant, and the engineer who listens to them finds the real cause faster.
Clear reporting
RCA findings and business cases go to managers who were not on the plant, so they need to be short and plain.
Resilience on a roster
FIFO and shutdown nights are demanding, and sites want engineers who stay safe and effective through a long swing.

Mistakes that cost mechanical engineer interviews

  1. No Engineers Australia status

Australian employers expect to see your membership grade and your path to Chartered. Leaving it out raises the question of whether your degree is accredited.

  2. Using the US licence language

A PE licence track or ABET wording reads as an American CV. Use Engineers Australia, CPEng, NER and state registration instead.

  3. Equipment left vague

Rotating equipment tells the reader little. Name the plant, the circuits and the equipment types, so an engineering manager can see the match.

  4. Results without the failure mode

Improved reliability is too general. Explain the failure you found, what you changed and what happened, even if you describe the result in words rather than figures.

  5. Leaving out roster and tickets

For a FIFO role, recruiters screen on roster history, inductions and tickets before reading anything else. Put them on the first page.

Write bullets with the XYZ formula: what changed, the number that shows it, and how you did it, in one line.

Questions about the mechanical engineer CV

Do I need CPEng to apply for Mechanical Engineer jobs in Australia?

Not for most graduate and mid-level roles. Senior and principal roles often ask for CPEng or eligibility, so say where you are on the pathway and when you expect to apply.

How long should a Mechanical Engineer CV be in Australia?

Two to three pages of A4. Consulting roles often add a one-page project list; keep the current role and your membership grade on the first page.

How do I get a FIFO engineering role without FIFO experience?

Show residential site work, shutdowns, vacation work on a mine or plant, and any inductions and tickets you hold. Say that you understand the roster and are ready for it.

Should I list Australian Standards on my CV?

Yes, the ones you actually work to, by number. Pressure equipment, machinery safety and ventilation standards are the common ones for mechanical roles.

What should a graduate Mechanical Engineer put on a CV?

Your accredited degree and honours result, vacation work with the plant type, your final-year project, student teams such as Formula SAE, and your Engineers Australia graduate membership.

How do I tailor my CV to a resources or building services role?

Lead with the plant or the building systems the advert names, and move the matching projects to the top. Paste the advert into Resume Master and it rewrites the CV against it in about two minutes.
