College Application Resume Example

A college application resume is the one-page record of what a high school senior did outside class, written for an admissions reader, an interviewer or a recommender. It is not required by most colleges, and it duplicates the Common App activities list on purpose: the resume holds the detail the ten 150-character entries cannot.

The Sample below is a senior in Worcester, Massachusetts, applying to engineering programs. Her robotics team captaincy, hospital volunteering and summer job are written as entries with hours, headcounts and results, the same way a working adult would write jobs. The page is dated to the start of senior year, when it goes to recommenders and interviewers.

Use this page as the base for scholarship applications too; the scholarship example shows how the same activities are reordered for a committee scoring service and honors. For a senior applying for a first job rather than to college, the high school student example puts work and availability first. The Campus template works for a one-page activities resume with education on top.

How the resume changes with experience

The same college application resume, written at three levels: a summary and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first role in the title

Rising junior starting to build an activities record, with one year on the robotics team, a summer job beginning in June and no leadership roles yet.

  • Completed a first build season as a mechanical sub-team member, attending every Saturday session.
  • Took the hardest math track available and finished precalculus with an A.
  • Chose one activity to go deep on rather than joining five clubs for the list.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

High school senior with a captaincy, 200 volunteer hours and two summers of paid work, applying to engineering programs with early action deadlines in November.

  • Leads a 22-student team and designed a component that competed unchanged through a full season.
  • Camp she organized raised 2,400 dollars and brought in six new members.
  • Kept the ice cream job over a resume-friendly internship because the hours fit and the money mattered.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programs

First-year engineering student converting the admissions resume into a job resume for a first campus position, with high school activities trimmed to the two that still matter.

  • Robotics captaincy and CAD work kept as the main project experience for a machine shop assistant application.
  • Hospital volunteering cut to one line; recitals and camp removed.
  • Dropped the SAT score and class rank the first week of college, since employers do not read them.

Skills to put on the college application resume

Hard skills

Course rigor and test scores
Admissions readers compare you to your school's offerings, so the AP list and the scores belong in the education entry.
A deep activity with a role and a result
Captain of 22 with a regional final says more than membership in eight clubs, and readers can tell the difference.
Technical or creative skills from the activity
CAD, a programming language or an instrument shows what the activity taught, not just that you attended.
Volunteer hours with a date
A running total with the as-of month shows sustained service and is easy to verify.
Paid work with hours per week
Colleges weigh a job as heavily as a club, and the hours tell them how much of your time it took.
Honors and recognitions
A department award or a commended-student result gives the reader an external signal beyond grades.

Soft skills

Leadership that others chose
Being elected or appointed captain is a judgment by peers and advisors that a reader trusts more than self-description.
Initiative in small settings
Proposing a wheelchair rack or writing a closing checklist shows you improve the place you are in, which recommenders can confirm.
Consistency
Every Saturday for two years, or every build season since freshman year, is the pattern admissions looks for.
Teaching younger students
Running a camp shows you can explain what you know, a skill that predicts success in group-heavy engineering programs.

Mistakes that cost college application interviews

  1. Listing every club since ninth grade

A reader scanning for depth sees twelve one-year memberships as spread thin. Keep the activities you stayed with, gave each a role and a result, and drop the ones you joined for a semester.

  2. Padding hours or titles

Colleges spot-check, counselors see the same list and recommenders know what you did. Round honestly, use the title the activity actually gave you and keep the numbers identical to the application form.

  3. Writing it like a job resume

An objective statement, a skills-first layout and a line about seeking opportunities belong on a work application. For admissions, education leads with rigor and scores, activities follow with depth, and the summary says who you are and what you plan to study.

  4. Going past one page

Interviewers and recommenders want a page they can hold. Cut middle school items, one-day events and anything duplicated in the honors line before you add a second sheet.

  5. Forgetting the as-of date

An activities resume is a snapshot that goes out in September and changes by spring. Put the month in the header or in the volunteer total so a reader knows which version they hold.

Questions about the college application resume

Do colleges actually want a resume?

Some accept one as an optional upload; most do not require it. The real uses are the interview, the recommender who needs your details and the scholarship portals that ask for one. Write it once for those, and upload it only where the application invites it.

How is the resume different from the Common App activities list?

The activities section allows ten entries of 150 characters each. The resume holds the same activities with full bullets, dates, hours and results, plus honors, courses and skills that have no place on the form. The two must agree on names, roles and hours.

Should I include my GPA, class rank and SAT score?

Yes, for admissions and scholarship uses, in the education entry with the weighting noted. Remove them the week you start college, since employers reading the same page later do not want them.

Can I include a paid job on a college application resume?

Yes, with hours per week and what you were trusted to do. Admissions readers value a job that paid for things or helped a family at least as much as a club, especially when it ran for more than one summer.

What if I did not have any leadership titles?

Show leadership through what you did: training new hires, organizing an event, mentoring a younger student. A result such as the closing checklist the shop still uses counts as leadership whether or not a title came with it.

Should I give the resume to my recommenders?

Yes, in September of senior year with a short note on what you plan to study. Teachers write better letters with your dates, numbers and roles in front of them, and they will mention details you forgot to tell them.

Every application goes out fitting the job.
