Employers hiring graduates compare you with dozens of classmates who have the same degree, so what sets you apart is evidence: internships with results, a capstone or research project explained in plain terms, leadership that involved real responsibility, and skills that match the role.

Each bullet reads like a professional one, with an action, a tool and an outcome, even when the setting was a classroom or a student organization.

Mistakes that cost first interviews

  1. Treating the capstone as coursework

    A capstone or thesis with a real client or dataset is experience. Describe it like a job, with your role, method and result.

  2. Internships without results

    Even short internships produce outcomes. Say what you built, analyzed or improved, and who used it.

  3. Too many campus activities

    List the two or three where you had real responsibility, and describe what you achieved.

  4. Ignoring campus recruiting keywords

    Graduate program postings list majors, courses and tools. Use their words where they are true of you.

  5. A generic summary

    Say what you studied, what you are good at and the role you want, in two or three sentences.

Questions about the college student resume

Should education go first on a college graduate resume?

Yes, until you have a year or two of full-time experience. Include your degree, graduation date, GPA if strong, and a few relevant courses.

How many internships do I need?

There is no required number. One well-described internship with results can be enough, especially with a strong project or campus role.

How do I list a degree I have not finished yet?

Write the degree and the expected graduation month and year, such as B.A. in Economics, expected May 2026.

Should I include part-time jobs unrelated to my field?

Yes, briefly. They show reliability and work ethic, and they fill gaps between internships.

How long should a new graduate resume be?

One page. Recruiters reviewing many graduates expect it.
