Copywriter Resume Example

A copywriter's resume is a writing sample before anyone opens the portfolio. Creative directors notice a clumsy verb or a padded summary in the first few lines, and they assume the ads will read the same way.

The Sample resume below belongs to a copywriter with six years across an independent agency and an in-house retail team. Every bullet names the work (a launch campaign, an email program, a product page rewrite), the channel it ran in and what moved afterward: sign-ups, click rate, sales, or approval rounds saved. The portfolio link sits in the header, where a hiring manager will look for it first.

Tailor the page to the kind of copy the posting wants. Agency roles care about concepts, awards and range across clients; in-house and conversion roles care about testing, brand voice and measured lift. If your work leans toward channels and budgets, compare the marketing manager example. The Canvas template leaves room for a portfolio line without crowding the words, and more pages like this one sit in the marketing hub.

How the resume changes with experience

The same copywriter resume, written at three levels: a summary and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first role in the title

Copywriter with a year of agency internship work and a spec portfolio of print, social and email concepts. Fast with drafts, careful with edits and comfortable writing in a client's voice from day one.

  • Wrote social captions for three agency clients during a summer internship, with most drafts approved in one round.
  • Built a spec campaign for a local bike shop that won the student category of a regional advertising show.
  • Proofread client decks and print files before release, catching pricing and date errors ahead of press.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Copywriter with five years of experience owning campaign copy from brief to launch for consumer brands, strongest in email and product pages.

  • Own copy for a client's weekly email program, sending to 400,000 subscribers.
  • Tested subject lines against a control every week and kept a log the whole team uses.
  • Present concepts directly to client marketing leads alongside an art director.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programs

Senior copywriter and associate creative director with ten years of experience leading campaign concepts, coaching writers and protecting brand voice across large accounts.

  • Led the writing on a national campaign relaunch, directing three copywriters across broadcast, digital and retail.
  • Wrote the brand voice system adopted across four product lines after a merger.
  • Review every line leaving the team for a major account and coach junior writers on concepting.

Skills to put on the copywriter resume

Hard skills

Concepting and headlines
Creative directors hire writers who can bring several strong ideas to a brief, and the headline is where they judge that first.
Writing in a brand's voice
Most copy jobs mean sounding like someone else consistently, so a voice guide you wrote or kept is strong evidence.
Email and lifecycle copy
Email is measurable and constant, and results such as click or conversion rate give your bullets real numbers.
Conversion and landing-page copy
In-house teams want writers who can move a sign-up or a sale, not only win approval in a meeting.
Testing (subject lines, headlines, CTAs)
Writers who test settle debates with data, which is a working habit hiring managers ask about directly.
SEO basics
Product pages and blog copy have to be found, and knowing search intent keeps you employable across both agency and in-house roles.
Editing and proofreading
A typo in a live ad is expensive, and teams trust writers who catch errors before a file goes out.

Soft skills

Taking feedback
Copy goes through several rounds with directors and clients, and writers who revise without friction are the ones asked back.
Partnering with designers
Words and visuals are made together, and art directors want a writer who thinks about the layout too.
Presenting ideas
Selling a concept in the room is often what decides whether it runs, especially at an agency.

Mistakes that cost copywriter interviews

  1. A resume that ignores its own advice

If you write that you craft clear, compelling copy, the reader will test that claim on the next sentence. Cut filler adjectives, use strong verbs and let one well-written bullet prove the point better than a promise does.

  2. No portfolio link, or a buried one

Hiring managers decide to read your work within seconds. Put a short, working portfolio address in the header next to your email, and make sure the first three pieces there match the jobs you are applying for.

  3. Listing channels instead of results

Wrote emails, social posts and web copy describes a job posting. Say what the copy did: more clicks, more sign-ups, faster approval, a campaign that ran longer than planned.

  4. Every client, no story

A list of twenty brand names is hard to remember. Pick the three or four projects closest to the role, describe them properly and group the rest in one line.

  5. Using the same resume for agency and in-house roles

Agencies look for range and concepting; in-house teams look for voice consistency and measured performance. Reorder your bullets and rewrite the summary for each kind of application.

Questions about the copywriter resume

Should a copywriter resume be creative?

The writing should be, the layout does not need to be. A clean, readable page with sharp sentences shows more skill than unusual fonts. Save the visual flair for the portfolio.

How do I show results if my copy was never measured?

Use what you do know: campaigns that ran, deadlines met, approvals on the first round, a client that renewed, work picked for an award show. Where you did see numbers, such as email clicks, include them.

How many portfolio pieces should a copywriter link to?

Six to ten strong pieces are enough. Lead with work that matches the posting, and include a short note on the brief and the result for each one.

Is a copywriter the same as a content writer?

They overlap, but copywriters usually write to persuade (ads, product pages, email), while content writers write longer pieces to inform. Use the title the posting uses, and see the writer example if your work is mostly long-form.

Should I list writing tools on my resume?

List the ones the posting names or that show how you work with a team, such as an email platform, a CMS or a design tool you comment in. Grammar checkers do not need a mention.

Every application goes out fitting the job.
