IT Manager Resume Example

An IT manager resume is read by executives who do not know the technology and by engineers who know it well. Both need the same evidence: the size of the environment you ran, the team and budget you were responsible for, and the outages, projects and savings that happened under you.

The Sample resume below is for an IT manager with seven years across a multi-location dental group, a credit union and a manufacturer, moving from senior systems administrator into managing a team of nine. The bullets count users, sites, tickets and dollars, and each one shows a management decision rather than a technical fix. Hands-on skills are present but sit below the leadership record.

Adjust for the organization in front of you. A company of two hundred wants a manager who still resolves escalations; a company of two thousand wants vendor management, budgeting and security governance; a regulated business wants audit experience. Speak to the leadership problems the posting hints at, such as turnover, a migration or a compliance finding. The system administrator example shows the hands-on path most IT managers came up through, the operations manager example shows how to present team leadership, and the Boardroom template gives budget and headcount figures a formal setting.

How the resume changes with experience

The same it manager resume, written at three levels: a summary and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first role in the title

IT team lead with two years supervising a three-person help desk after four years as a technician, now seeking a first manager role with budget responsibility.

  • Lead a help desk of three technicians supporting 250 users at a single office.
  • Cleared a backlog of 400 open tickets in three months by introducing daily triage and a knowledge base.
  • Recommended replacing the aging file server with cloud storage and wrote the cost comparison the director approved.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

IT manager with five years of experience running infrastructure and support for a 500-employee company with a team of six and a $1.5 million budget.

  • Manage six staff across help desk, systems and network for a company with four offices.
  • Delivered the office relocation network build on the move weekend with no downtime on the first business day.
  • Chose to bring backup administration in-house from a managed provider after two missed recovery tests, saving $40,000 a year.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programs

IT director with fourteen years of experience leading technology for a 3,000-employee organization, responsible for a $14 million budget, a team of 45 and the enterprise security program.

  • Direct infrastructure, applications, security and support across six departments and 40 locations.
  • Consolidated three data centers into one plus cloud over two years, cutting run costs by about a quarter.
  • Deferred an ERP replacement by a year to stabilize the network first, and presented the tradeoff to the board.

Skills to put on the it manager resume

Hard skills

Budgeting and cost management
Executives hire IT managers to control spend, and a dollar figure with a result next to it is the line they remember.
Vendor and contract management
Much of modern IT is bought rather than built, and negotiated savings or improved service terms are easy to verify and impressive.
Project delivery
Migrations, refreshes and rollouts define an IT manager's year, and a PMP or a record of on-time projects gets asked about in every interview.
Security and compliance governance
Audits, examinations and cyber insurance questionnaires land on the IT manager's desk, and closed findings show you can handle them.
Service management
Ticket volumes, response times and satisfaction scores prove the help desk improved under you, and ITIL vocabulary helps in larger organizations.
Core infrastructure knowledge
You still need to judge your team's work, so name the platforms you administered, such as Microsoft 365, VMware or Azure.
Business continuity
Tested recovery objectives are what separates a manager from an administrator, and boards ask about them after every publicized outage.

Soft skills

Hiring and developing people
Turnover on a help desk is expensive, and technicians you promoted are the clearest evidence you build teams.
Translating for non-technical leaders
You explain risk and cost to executives every week, and interview panels usually include one of them.
Prioritization under interruption
Outages interrupt projects, and managers who can protect the roadmap while handling escalations are rare.
Calm escalation handling
When a senior partner cannot log in, how you respond becomes the department's reputation.

Mistakes that cost it manager interviews

  1. Writing a systems administrator resume with a manager title

If every bullet is a server you configured, the reader assumes you have not made the shift. Lead with headcount, budget, vendors and projects, and put hands-on skills in a shorter section below.

  2. No budget or headcount figures

State the size of your team, the number of users and sites, and the dollars you were responsible for. Without them a hiring manager cannot tell whether you ran a department or a closet.

  3. Projects without outcomes

Led the Microsoft 365 migration is a start. Add the timeline, whether it landed on schedule, what it cost against plan and what changed for users afterward.

  4. Leaving out security and audit work

Compliance findings, insurance questionnaires and incident response are now a core part of the role. Even one closed audit or a rollout of multifactor authentication belongs on the page.

  5. A skills list of every product ever supported

Executives skim past it and engineers judge it. Keep the tools to the platforms that matter for the posting and spend the space on leadership results.

Questions about the it manager resume

How do I move from systems administrator to IT manager on a resume?

Pull forward anything that looks like management: leading a project, supervising a technician, owning a vendor relationship, presenting a budget request. Quantify the environment you supported and show a decision you made rather than a task you completed.

Should an IT manager resume list technical certifications?

Yes, but choose the ones that fit the level. PMP, ITIL and a security credential such as Security+ or CISSP speak to management. Older desktop certifications can be dropped once you have led a team.

How long should an IT manager resume be?

Two pages is normal once you have managed teams for several years. Keep the current role detailed and compress anything older than ten years into a line each.

What numbers matter most on an IT manager resume?

Team size, user and site count, annual budget, project cost against plan, savings negotiated, ticket response times and uptime. Pick the ones that improved under you and state where they started.

Is IT manager different from IT director?

Usually by scope. Directors own strategy, larger budgets and multiple managers; managers own a team and its service delivery. Mirror the title in the posting, and let the size of your figures place you.
