Part-Time Job Resume Example

A student's part-time job resume answers three questions on one page: when you can work, whether you show up, and whether you have handled customers or cash. Managers hiring for 12 to 20 hours a week read dozens of these in a sitting. Managers hiring for 12 to 20 hours a week read dozens of these, so your availability belongs in the headline, not buried at the end.

The Sample resume below is for a second-year communication major in Columbus, Ohio, who already holds a grocery cashier job and is applying to a campus bookstore and a coffee shop near campus for better hours. Notice that her dining hall shift and her high school food pantry volunteering are written as real work: how many customers, how much money handled, what she was trusted with. Those details are what separate a student who gets a call from one who does not.

If you have never held any job, the no experience example shows how to fill the page honestly, and the summer job example covers seasonal work. For on-campus positions tied to financial aid, see the work study example. The Campus template fits a one-page student resume like this one, and the student resume builder will keep the layout tidy while you swap in your own jobs.

How the resume changes with experience

The same part-time job resume, written at three levels: a summary and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first role in the title

First-year student with no paid work yet, applying for a first part-time job at a campus bookstore. Two years of volunteer shifts at a food pantry and a yearbook role that involved selling ads to local businesses.

  • Checked in 60 to 80 families every Saturday at a food pantry for two years, so greeting strangers and keeping a line moving are familiar.
  • Sold $9,000 in yearbook advertising to 40 local businesses, the highest total in the school's recent history.
  • Available 20 hours a week around a morning class schedule, including both weekend days.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Second-year student with a year of grocery cashier experience and a year of campus dining work, seeking a part-time job closer to campus with evening and weekend hours.

  • Ran a register for 150 to 200 customers a shift and closed the store three nights a week.
  • Fourteen months with no till shortage and a store record of zero customer escalations.
  • Kept the cashier job through two full semesters rather than quitting at finals, which the manager noted in a reference.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programs

Fourth-year student and shift lead with three years of part-time retail work, looking for a keyholder or assistant manager role that fits a final-year class schedule.

  • Lead a shift of four to six associates, writing the break schedule and handling every refund dispute that reaches the desk.
  • Reduced register discrepancies on my shifts to under $5 a week by introducing a mid-shift drawer count.
  • Turned down a full-time offer in the spring to finish the degree on time, and told the manager early so the store could plan.

Skills to put on the part-time job resume

Hard skills

Cash handling
A manager will not hand a drawer to someone who has never balanced one, so say how much you handled and that it balanced.
Point-of-sale software
Naming the system you used tells the hiring manager how long training will take, and most retail systems look alike once you know one.
Food handler or ServSafe card
Restaurants and cafes must have certified staff on shift, and arriving with the card already in hand saves them a step.
Stocking and inventory
Every retail job includes backroom time, and showing you have done counts and rotation proves you will not stand around when the floor is quiet.
Opening and closing procedures
Being trusted with keys or a deposit is the clearest signal a past employer had that you were reliable.
Returns and complaints
Handling an upset customer without calling a manager is the part of the job most new hires struggle with.

Soft skills

Availability you honor
Managers lose more sleep over no-shows than over slow learners, and a clear availability line plus a tenure of a year says you will be there.
Speed under pressure
A rush at the register or the lunch line is the real test, and a bullet with customers per hour shows you have passed it.
Friendliness that is not forced
Repeat customers are the business for a local store, and managers hire people they would want to be served by.
Learning quickly
Part-time staff turn over fast, so a worker who was trusted with new stations within weeks is worth more than one who stayed on a single task.

Mistakes that cost part-time job interviews

  1. No availability line

A manager building a schedule needs to know your hours before anything else. Put the days and times you can work in the headline or the first line of the summary, and update it every semester when your classes change.

  2. Writing like a job description

Responsible for customer service says nothing. Replace it with what happened: how many customers, how much cash, what you were allowed to do without a supervisor, how many people you trained.

  3. Leaving off volunteer and school roles

A food pantry shift, a yearbook ad sales job or a club treasurer role is work. It involved showing up on time, handling money or dealing with the public. List it with dates and a bullet or two just as you would a paid job.

  4. Two pages for two jobs

A part-time resume is one page, always. If you are spilling over, cut the objective paragraph, the list of every high school class and the references section before you cut a bullet with a number in it.

  5. Hiding the cashier job because it is not your major

Students sometimes leave off their grocery or fast food job because they think it looks unimpressive. To the person hiring for a shop or a cafe, that job is the most relevant line on the page.

Questions about the part-time job resume

What should a student put on a resume for a part-time job?

Availability first, then any paid work, then volunteer roles, school positions and clubs written with numbers, then education with your expected graduation and a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Add a short skills list with the register or software you have used and any food handler card.

How do I write a part-time job resume with no work history?

Use what you have: volunteering, a school club where you handled money or events, babysitting, yard work for neighbors, or a class project with a deadline. Write each one with what you did and how often, and lean on the summary to state your availability and that you are looking for your first job.

Should I include my college courses on a part-time job resume?

Only two or three, and only if they connect to the job, such as a marketing or hospitality class for a retail role. The manager cares more about whether you can work Saturday than about your course list.

Do I need a different resume for each store I apply to?

Mostly the same page, with the headline and the first sentence of the summary adjusted. A coffee shop wants to see the food safety card and the speed of your dining hall line; a bookstore wants the register and the returns experience.

Is a cover letter necessary for a part-time job?

Rarely for retail or food service, where you often apply in person or through a short online form. If the posting asks for one, keep it to three short paragraphs: your availability, your most relevant experience, and when you can start.

How far back should a part-time job resume go?

For a student, high school is fine, including volunteer work and clubs from ninth grade onward. Once you have two or three paid jobs, drop the oldest high school items and keep the page to one side.

Every application goes out fitting the job.
