Student Teacher Resume Example

A student teacher resume is read by principals hiring for next school year months before you are licensed. They want your grade band, your exam status and proof your lessons moved students. That means the subjects you are prepared for, each licensure exam with its result, the status of your clinical placement and assessment data a school recognizes.

The Sample resume is an elementary education major in Charlotte in the middle of a full-time student teaching semester in third grade, graduating in December. The placement is written as a job, with class size, the units taught solo, the assessment data behind them and the parent communication handled. Earlier practicum hours and two years leading an afterschool program fill out the page with classroom management that a principal can picture.

Students heading into a counseling or support role should look at the school counselor example, and those pairing education with a social services path can compare the social work student example. After licensure, the teacher example is the next version of this page. The Campus template presents placements, exams and education on one page.

How the resume changes with experience

The same student teacher resume, written at three levels: a summary and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first role in the title

Second-year education major who has completed the first field observation course and a summer as a day camp counselor, seeking a teacher assistant or afterschool position to build classroom hours before methods courses begin.

  • Observed and logged 30 hours across kindergarten, second and fifth grade classrooms and wrote reflections the professor used as a model for the class.
  • Supervised a camp group of 14 seven-year-olds for eight weeks, planning daily activities and handling parent check-in.
  • Picked the elementary track over secondary after the observations showed where the energy was, and switched advisors in time to stay on schedule.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Elementary education candidate in a full-time third-grade student teaching placement with passed licensure exams, a solo-taught writing unit with assessment data and two years of afterschool leadership, applying for K-5 positions for the coming school year.

  • Doubled the number of students proficient on the district writing rubric across a six-week unit.
  • Moved seven of nine struggling readers up a level through a daily guided reading group.
  • Asked to take over the classroom a week earlier than the placement schedule required, to get more days of full-lead teaching before interviews.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programs

Newly licensed elementary teacher with a completed student teaching semester, a passed edTPA, a North Carolina initial professional license and a signed contract for a second-grade classroom, finishing a summer as a reading tutor.

  • Earned the initial professional license in K-6 with endorsements in reading and English as a second language.
  • Tutored twelve rising second graders for six weeks of summer reading; ten entered the year on grade level.
  • Chose a Title I school with a strong mentor program over a higher-paying suburban offer, for the coaching in the first year.

Skills to put on the student teacher resume

Hard skills

Grade band and subject preparation
Principals hire for a specific opening, and a headline that says K-6 with a preference for grades two through four lets them place you.
Licensure exam status
A candidate who has passed the required exams can be offered a contract; one who has not is a risk, so list each exam and its status.
Lesson data
Growth from a pre-assessment to a post-assessment is the language of evaluation, and a bullet with those two numbers reads like a teacher's, not a student's.
Guided reading and phonics instruction
Elementary schools are under pressure on early literacy, and specific reading methods on the page match what they are looking for.
Differentiation for IEPs and English learners
Every classroom has both, and naming how many you taught shows you have planned for them, not just read about them.
Classroom technology
Google Classroom, Seesaw or the district gradebook on your page saves a principal from wondering how long onboarding will take.
Family communication
Newsletters, calls and conferences are a daily part of the job, and principals ask about them in every interview.

Soft skills

Classroom presence
Two years running a room of 30 children after school is proof of management that a methods course cannot give.
Receptiveness to coaching
Cooperating teachers write your recommendation, and a bullet about acting on their feedback shows you can be mentored.
Consistency
Children and principals both need routines that hold; a transition routine with a measured result demonstrates it.
Initiative
Starting a club or asking for an earlier full-lead week tells a hiring committee you will not wait to be told.

Mistakes that cost student teacher interviews

  1. Writing the placement as observation

Observed and assisted the cooperating teacher undersells a semester in which you taught. Lead with the subjects, the class size, the solo units and the data, and reserve observation language for early field courses.

  2. No numbers from the classroom

Students often think teaching cannot be measured. It is measured constantly: students proficient before and after a unit, reading levels gained, homework return, time lost in transitions. Pick two and put them in bullets.

  3. Leaving the exams off until the license arrives

Principals need to know whether you can be licensed by August. List each required exam with passed, scheduled or registered, and the edTPA or portfolio status, so no one has to ask.

  4. Listing every education course

Methods courses are assumed. Keep a short coursework line with the ones that match the posting, such as a reading or special education course, and give the space to the placement.

  5. Ignoring non-school jobs with children

Camp, afterschool, coaching and childcare roles show supervision, parent communication and behavior management. Keep them with bullets on group size and what you ran.

Questions about the student teacher resume

How do I put student teaching on a resume?

As the first experience entry, titled Student Teacher with the grade and subject, the school and the dates. Bullets cover the class size and composition, what you taught solo, assessment results and family communication. Note the cooperating teacher's role in your cover letter or interview, not on the resume.

Should I apply for teaching jobs before I finish student teaching?

Yes. Districts post openings for the next school year from late winter onward, and many hold job fairs in spring. Apply during the placement with a resume that states your graduation and licensure timeline; the offer will be contingent on the license.

Which exams should a teacher candidate list?

Whatever your state requires for the license you are seeking: basic skills tests if applicable, content exams for your grade band or subject, a reading foundations exam in states that require one, and the performance assessment or portfolio. List each with its status and year.

What if my placement grade is not the grade I want to teach?

State the preference in the headline and summary, and show range through practicum hours and other work with children in the target grades. Principals know placements are assigned, and a K-6 license covers the whole band.

How long should a student teacher resume be?

One page. Education, exam status, the placement, earlier field hours and work with children fill it comfortably. Keep a separate teaching portfolio with sample lessons and data for interviews.

Do I include my GPA on an education resume?

Include it at 3.5 or higher; many districts weight it in screening and some scholarships and loan forgiveness programs ask for it. Below that, let the placement data and the exams speak.

Every application goes out fitting the job.
