Software Engineer Cover Letter Example (UK)

A Software Engineer cover letter in the UK is read by two people with different questions. The recruiter or talent partner wants to match the languages, the cloud platform and the domain against the advert in under a minute; the engineering manager wants one system you built, what it does under load and what you changed about it. A letter that gives both of them what they want, in that order, gets the CV opened and the technical interview booked.

The sample below goes with the software engineer CV example: Kieran Oyelaran, a backend engineer at a Bristol payments company, applying for a senior platform post at a regulated lender in the same city. It opens with the stack and the one piece of work that matches the advert, spends two paragraphs on latency, on-call load and a Kubernetes migration with the figures the CV already states, and closes with the certification, the notice period and the ask.

Rewrite the letter for every vacancy. A platform team wants reliability and the migration story; a product team wants the feature users noticed; a fintech wants to hear that you have shipped under change control. Keep the shape and swap the evidence.

Updated . The person, the employer and the recipient in this sample letter are fictional. Written for applicants in the UK. It goes with the software engineer cv example (uk) for the same person.

Application for Senior Software Engineer, Platform Team, ref ENG-2026-07

Dear Ms Stanmore,

I'd like to be considered for the Senior Software Engineer post on the platform team at Harbourside Lending, advertised on your careers page. I am a backend engineer with six years in Go and Python on AWS, the last four at a Bristol payments company, where I designed the settlement service that reconciles around 1.8 million card payments a night and moved three services onto Kubernetes under FCA change control. Your advert asks for someone who can make a regulated platform more reliable without slowing the product teams down, and that is the work I have been doing.

At Avonbank Payments I own the services that other teams build on. When the payment authorisation path was too slow for a new partner, I removed two synchronous calls and added a read-through cache in Redis, which took p99 latency from 390 ms to 150 ms. I ran the team's incident reviews for a year: pages per on-call week fell from nine to four, and every review ended with a fix that someone was tracking. I wrote the design and migration plan that moved three services onto Kubernetes on AWS with no customer-facing downtime, and I took it through the company's FCA change-control process myself, so I know what a reviewer in compliance needs to see before a release goes out.

Before that, at Greenfinch Energy Software in Swindon, I built the ingestion API that takes readings from 600,000 smart meters a day and replaced an overnight CSV import with an event-driven pipeline on SQS, so supplier dashboards updated within minutes rather than the next morning. The contract tests I introduced between four services ended a whole class of production incidents. I would bring the same habit to your platform: find the failure that keeps recurring, fix the cause, and write it up so the next engineer does not have to rediscover it.

My CV is enclosed with the detail of both posts and my AWS Certified Developer credential. I would welcome a conversation about the migration or the settlement service, and I am available for interview from the week of 19 October; my notice period is one month. Thank you for your time.

Yours sincerely,

Kieran Oyelaran

How this software engineer cover letter is built

  1. The opening gives the stack, the domain and the one system that matches the advert

A recruiter is scanning for Go, Python, AWS and a regulated domain, and the first two sentences hand them over. The engineering manager gets the settlement service and the Kubernetes migration, which are the two things the platform advert is about. The last sentence names the problem the employer posted and says the applicant has been solving it, which is the only reason to apply that a hiring manager believes.

  2. The second paragraph takes three bullets from the CV and tells the story behind each

Latency, on-call pages and the migration are the strongest lines on the software engineer CV, and the letter uses the same figures: 390 ms to 150 ms, nine pages to four, three services, no downtime. What the letter adds is the why and the how, such as the new partner that made latency matter and the compliance reviewer who signed off the release. That is what an engineering manager will ask about in the interview, so the letter starts the conversation.

  3. The third paragraph proves the pattern held at a previous employer

One good year can be luck. The Greenfinch paragraph shows the same instincts, event-driven over batch and contract tests over hope, two years earlier in a different domain. It ends with a sentence about how the applicant works, which is as close to a value statement as a software engineer's letter should go, because it is backed by the two paragraphs above it.

  4. The closing names the CV, the certification, the notice period and the dates

A platform lead wants to know when you can start before she wants to know anything else about logistics, so the notice period is in the letter rather than left for the recruiter to ask. Offering a conversation about a specific system invites the technical interview on the applicant's strongest ground. One thank-you, then the sign-off that a named recipient takes in the UK: Yours sincerely.

Mistakes that cost software engineer interviews

  1. Leading with the language list

A first paragraph that reads "proficient in Go, Python, Java, TypeScript, AWS, GCP, Docker and Kubernetes" tells the manager you have nothing to say about what you built. Put the technologies inside the sentences about systems: the settlement service in Go, the ingestion API in Python and PostgreSQL. The recruiter still finds the keywords, and the manager sees them in use.

  2. Describing the team's work as your own

"We migrated the platform to Kubernetes" invites the question of what you did. Say what you owned: the design document, the migration plan, the change-control submission, the on-call reviews. An interviewer will find out within ten minutes anyway, and a letter that claims the team's result as yours sets up a bad half hour.

  3. Sending the same letter to a product team and a platform team

A product team wants the feature customers noticed and how you worked with the designer and the product manager; a platform team wants reliability, cost and the engineers you unblocked. The sample above is written for a platform post, so it leads with the migration and the on-call figures. For a product role, the same CV would lead with the authorisation path and what the new partner could do once it was fast.

  4. Ignoring the regulated-domain line in the advert

Fintech, energy, gambling and health adverts all mention a regulator, and most letters skip it. If you have shipped under FCA change control, Ofgem reporting or clinical safety review, say so in one sentence; it is the line that separates you from an engineer with the same stack and no idea why releases need sign-off.

  5. Writing a page and a half

Engineers who write good design documents often write long letters. Four paragraphs and under 400 words is enough. If a paragraph is explaining architecture in detail, cut it to the result and the number, and let the interview cover the diagram.

  6. Letting the recruiter supply the letter

When an agency recruiter submits you, they may send a two-line summary in place of a letter. Write your own and ask them to attach it. The hiring manager reads the letter to decide the order of the interviews, and a recruiter's summary says nothing about the system you are proudest of.

Questions about the software engineer cover letter

How long should a software engineer cover letter be in the UK?

Three or four paragraphs and under 400 words; the sample above is about 360. Engineering managers read dozens of applications for each senior post and will spend a minute on the letter before opening the CV, so the first paragraph has to carry the stack and the one system that fits the advert.

Do software engineers in the UK still need a cover letter?

Fewer employers ask for one, but most careers pages have a free-text box or an attachment field, and a short letter in it is read. When there is no field, the first two paragraphs make a good message to the hiring manager or the recruiter. The letter matters most for a senior post, a change of domain or a move from a contract to a permanent role, because those are the cases where the CV alone leaves a question.

Who do I address it to?

The engineering manager or head of platform named on the advert; if the advert names nobody, the team lead whose team is hiring is usually findable on the company's engineering blog or on their site. "Dear Ms Stanmore" with "Yours sincerely" is the UK form for a named person. If you have only the team, "Dear Platform Engineering Team" with "Yours sincerely" is better than "Dear Sir or Madam".

Should I mention IR35, day rates or salary?

Not in a letter for a permanent post, where the notice period is the only logistics worth a line. For a contract role, say whether the engagement is inside or outside IR35 only if the advert raised it, and leave rates to the recruiter. Everything else about pay belongs in the conversation after the technical interview.

How do I write the letter when my stack is different from the advert's?

Lead with the system and the problem rather than the language, then say plainly which parts of their stack you have and which you would learn, with one example of a technology you picked up quickly before. A manager hiring for Go will read a Python engineer who has run Kubernetes in production; they will not read one who pretends. Resume Master's editor rewrites a CV against each vacancy in a couple of minutes, and the letter should follow the same honest evidence.

Should I include links to GitHub or a portfolio?

Put them on the CV, not in the letter, and only if the repositories show work you would be happy to discuss. A single sentence in the closing paragraph, pointing at one repository that is relevant to the post, is as far as a letter should go. Nobody opens five links from a cover letter.
