Accountant CV Example (Ireland)

An Accountant CV in Ireland is read by a financial controller or a practice partner who will check the qualification first, the systems second and the month-end third. Say whether you are ACA, ACCA or CPA and when you qualified, name the firm where you trained, and give the close you own now with the entities, the Revenue filings and the audit result. A CV that mentions ROS, FRS 102 and a B1 annual return reads as written by someone who has done the work in Ireland.

The Sample CV below is for a Chartered Accountant with six years across a Cork practice and an engineering group, who qualified with Chartered Accountants Ireland in practice and moved to industry. Each bullet names the process, month-end close, VAT and corporation tax filings, grant claims, the statutory audit, and what changed because of the work: days cut from the close, a clean audit, cash collected.

Tailor it to the vacancy. A practice role wants client variety, audit and tax compliance; an industry role wants ownership of a close, management accounts and a system; a multinational shared-service centre wants US GAAP, intercompany and SAP. The US counterpart of this page is the accountant resume example, written for American employers on Letter paper. The Chronological template suits a single-column finance CV.

How an Irish CV differs

An Irish Accountant CV is built around the professional body and the training contract rather than a state licence. Employers want to know whether you are ACA with Chartered Accountants Ireland, ACCA or CPA, the firm where you trained, and when you qualified; a trainee's CV says which CAP or ACCA papers are passed and when the contract ends. The compliance vocabulary is Irish, Revenue and ROS, the CRO, FRS 102, and the page is two sides of A4 with a short personal profile at the top and no photo.

For a accountant in Ireland

  1. ACA, ACCA or CPA, with the year

Put the designation after your name in the headline and give the body and the qualification year in a qualifications section. For a trainee, state the papers passed, the stage reached and the expected qualification date; Irish employers hire on that timeline.

  2. The training contract and the firm

Where you trained is read as a reference in itself. Name the firm, the contract length, the client sectors and the largest audit you ran as senior, even after you have moved to industry.

  3. Revenue, ROS and the CRO

List the returns you filed and through which system: VAT3 and RTD, CT1, PAYE modernisation, RCT, B1 annual returns. A CV that writes IRS or state tax has been copied from an American template.

  4. FRS 102, IFRS and US GAAP

Say which frameworks you have prepared accounts under. Multinationals in Dublin, Cork and Galway often want US GAAP alongside IFRS, while owner-managed companies report under FRS 102.

  5. Practice, industry and the shared-service centre

Irish vacancies fall into three markets with different language. Practice wants clients and busy seasons, industry wants a close and management accounts, and the shared-service centres want intercompany, SAP and a second language. Write the CV for the one in front of you.

Every CV in Ireland

A4 paper
The page is A4. Irish employers print and file on A4, and a Letter-sized PDF is the first sign a CV was written for the US.
Two pages is normal
Two pages is the norm for an Irish CV. Graduates fit one; nobody needs three unless the role is senior.
No photo
No photo, date of birth or marital status. Irish employers do not ask for them, and leaving them off keeps the page about the work.
Dates as DD/MM/YYYY
Day, month, year where a full date appears; month and year for each role. The US month-first order confuses the reader.
Irish English
Irish English follows British spelling: organise, programme, centre, licence, specialise.
Town or Dublin postal district, not a street address
"Dublin 8" or "Cork" is enough on the contact line. A full address is not expected, and the US-style "City, ST 12345" line never is.

How the CV changes with experience

The same accountant CV, written at three levels: a profile and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first post in the title

Accounting graduate in the second year of a training contract with a Dublin practice, with CAP2 passed and a client portfolio in retail and professional services. Comfortable with reconciliations, journals and ROS filings, and keen to take on a first audit as senior.

  • Prepare bank, debtor and creditor reconciliations and the VAT3 returns for twelve small company clients each period.
  • Tested a sample of 80 purchase invoices on a construction client audit and documented a control gap the manager carried into the management letter.
  • Built a pivot-table review of payroll costs that the partner now uses for the client's quarterly meeting.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

ACCA-qualified management accountant with five years in a Galway medical device company, owning the monthly management accounts and the budget process for two sites.

  • Produce the monthly management accounts pack for two sites and present it to the site leads on day five.
  • Rebuilt the standard costing model after a product line change, removing a recurring variance the auditors had queried.
  • Run the annual budget process and the quarterly reforecast with twelve budget holders.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programmes

Financial Controller and Chartered Accountant with eleven years in practice and industry, leading a team of five through the close, the audit and the Revenue compliance for a group with €90 million turnover.

  • Lead a team of five through a five-day close across six entities and two currencies.
  • Directed the move from Sage to NetSuite, mapping 700 accounts and running two parallel closes without a restatement.
  • Serve as the auditors' main contact and cut fieldwork from four weeks to two by delivering the full request list before they arrive.

Skills to put on the accountant CV

Hard skills

Month-end close
Nearly every Irish accountant vacancy asks who owns the close and how fast it runs, so give the entities, the account count and the day you finish.
Revenue compliance through ROS
VAT, corporation tax, PAYE modernisation and RCT are filed through ROS, and a controller wants to know you have done it without a surcharge.
FRS 102 and IFRS
Irish companies report under FRS 102 or IFRS, and naming the framework shows you have prepared accounts under it rather than studied it.
CRO filings
Annual returns and B1 filings carry late penalties and the loss of audit exemption, so a clean record is worth a line.
An accounting system such as Sage, SAP or NetSuite
Adverts name the system the company runs, and the shortlisting screen matches it word for word.
Audit preparation
A clean audit saves fees and weeks of disruption, which makes it one of the most persuasive results on a finance CV.
Advanced Excel
Lookups, pivot tables and Power Query are how schedules get built on time, and interviewers in Ireland still test them.

Soft skills

Attention to detail
Show it through outcomes, such as audits with no adjustments and filings with no surcharge, rather than claiming it as a trait.
Explaining numbers to non-finance colleagues
An accountant who can walk a plant manager through a variance gets pulled into decisions and promoted sooner.
Working to a filing calendar
ROS and CRO deadlines do not move, and a record of meeting them is proof you can carry more of the compliance load.

Mistakes that cost accountant interviews

  1. Hiding the qualification stage

Whether you are qualified, part-qualified or newly out of a training contract is the first thing a controller checks. Put it in the headline and the qualifications section with the body and the year, and give the expected date if you are still sitting exams.

  2. Duties instead of results

Prepared management accounts describes the job. Add the entities, the day the pack lands, what the audit found and which filings went in on time, so the reader can judge the scale and the standard.

  3. American vocabulary

CPA with a state board, GAAP without saying which, IRS, 401(k) and Form 10-K mark a CV as written for somewhere else. Use ROS, Revenue, the CRO, FRS 102 and the Irish bodies.

  4. No system named

Irish adverts name Sage, SAP, NetSuite or Dynamics. If the CV says only accounting software, the shortlisting screen has nothing to match. List the systems exactly as the advert spells them.

  5. One CV for practice and industry

A practice partner reads for clients, sectors and audit work; a financial controller reads for ownership of a close. Rewrite the profile and reorder the bullets for the side the vacancy sits on.

Questions about the accountant CV

Where do I put ACA or ACCA on an Irish CV?

After your name in the headline, such as Niamh Costigan, ACA, and again in a qualifications section with Chartered Accountants Ireland or ACCA and the year. If you are still in training, write Trainee Accountant with the stage and the expected qualification date.

How long should an Accountant CV be in Ireland?

Two sides of A4. A trainee or newly qualified accountant can fit one side; a financial controller with several employers uses both, with the qualification, the systems and the current close on the first.

Should I include my training contract after I have moved to industry?

Yes. Irish employers read the firm you trained with as a reference. Give the contract dates, the sectors and the largest audit you ran, and keep it shorter than your current role.

Do I need a different CV for a shared-service centre in Dublin?

Yes. Lead with intercompany, multi-currency, SAP or Oracle, US GAAP and any second language, and give volumes such as entities or invoices. The month-end close still matters, but the systems and the scale matter more.

How do I write accountant bullets without big numbers?

Use the scale of the work and what it changed. Count entities, accounts, clients or returns, and describe the outcome: a shorter close, a clean audit, a grant paid on first submission, a filing calendar met every period.

How do I tailor an Accountant CV to each vacancy quickly?

Paste the advert into Resume Master and it rewrites the profile and reorders the bullets against the role in about two minutes, keeping the Irish bodies and the systems the employer named. Read it once more before you send it.

Every application goes out fitting the vacancy.
