Accountant Cover Letter Example (Ireland)

An Accountant cover letter in Ireland is read by a financial controller or a finance director who will check three things in order: the qualification and when you got it, the close or the client portfolio you own now, and whether the audit and the Revenue filings were clean. The letter should give all three in the first half page, with the systems you work in, and then say why this company and this role.

The sample below goes with the accountant CV example: Niamh Costigan, a Chartered Accountant who owns the month-end close for an engineering group in Cork, applying for a Financial Reporting Manager post at a life sciences company in Ringaskiddy. It opens with the role and her qualification, gives the close cut from ten days to six and the two clean audits with the figures her CV already carries, uses the practice years and the grant claims as supporting evidence, and closes with what is enclosed and the interview request.

Write one letter per vacancy. A practice role wants the audit portfolio and client variety first; a shared-service centre wants intercompany, SAP and the group reporting calendar; an industry role, as here, wants the close.

Updated . The person, the employer and the recipient in this sample letter are fictional. Written for applicants in Ireland. It goes with the accountant cv example (ireland) for the same person.

Application for Financial Reporting Manager, ref FIN-26-11

Dear Ms Mulcahy,

I would like to apply for the Financial Reporting Manager position at your Ringaskiddy site, advertised on IrishJobs. I am a Chartered Accountant with Chartered Accountants Ireland, qualified in 2021, and for the last five years I have owned the month-end close and statutory reporting for Lee Valley Engineering Group in Cork, which has three Irish entities and a UK subsidiary. Your advert asks for someone who can shorten a close and keep the audit clean, and I have done both.

When I joined Lee Valley the group close took ten working days. I rebuilt the reconciliation calendar across 260 balance sheet accounts and automated the intercompany matching, and within a year the close was six days. I prepare the FRS 102 statutory accounts and the audit file for the external audit, and the last two audits closed with no adjustments and an unqualified opinion. I file the VAT3, RTD, corporation tax and PAYE returns through ROS for every entity, with no late filing or Revenue interest charge in four years, and I prepare the CRO annual returns and B1 filings with the company secretary.

I trained at Hegarty Nolan and Co. in Mallow, where I led audits of owner-managed companies with turnover between €2 million and €40 million and prepared the accounts and corporation tax computations for a portfolio of 35 clients, so I know what an auditor wants to find in a file before they ask for it. At Lee Valley I also compiled the financial claims for two Enterprise Ireland capital grants worth €1.4 million, both paid in full on first submission. I work in SAP Business One and Sage 50, I hold the Certificate in Irish Taxation, and I am used to explaining variances to plant managers who do not want a lecture on accruals.

My CV is enclosed with the details of both roles. I would welcome an interview and the chance to hear how your group reporting runs between Cork and the parent company, and I can be available at any time with a week's notice. Thank you for your consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Niamh Costigan

How this accountant cover letter is built

  1. The opening gives the qualification, the year and the close she owns

A financial controller reads an accountant's letter for the designation first, so the sample says ACA with Chartered Accountants Ireland and the year in the second sentence, then the close and the entities. The last sentence of the paragraph takes the advert's two asks, a shorter close and a clean audit, and says she has done both, which is what the next paragraph proves.

  2. The second paragraph is the close, the audit and Revenue in that order

Ten days to six, 260 accounts, two audits with no adjustments, four years without a late filing: every figure is on the accountant CV and each one is a thing a controller can check at reference. Naming VAT3, RTD, ROS and the B1 tells the reader the applicant has filed in Ireland, not just read about it.

  3. The third paragraph uses the practice years and the grants as support

Training in a Mallow practice and leading audits of owner-managed companies is why she knows what the auditor wants, and the letter says so rather than leaving the reader to infer it. The Enterprise Ireland grants, paid in full on first submission, are a result most industry accountants cannot claim. Systems and the tax certificate close the paragraph in one sentence.

  4. The closing asks about group reporting

A life sciences company in Ringaskiddy is likely to report to a parent abroad, and asking how reporting runs between Cork and the parent shows she has thought about the job rather than only about getting it. The CV is named, availability is stated and the thanks is a single line.

Mistakes that cost accountant interviews

  1. Leaving out when you qualified

"Qualified accountant" without the body and the year makes the reader go to the CV to find out whether you are two years post-qualification or ten, and whether you are ACA, ACCA or CPA. Put the designation, the institute and the year in the first paragraph. If you are part-qualified, say which exams remain and when you sit them.

  2. Describing the close without a number

Every accountant owns a close. What a controller wants is the size of it, the number of entities and what you changed: days cut, reconciliations automated, a consolidation brought in-house. If you have not changed the close, say what you kept clean and give the audit result.

  3. Writing a practice letter for an industry role

A controller hiring into industry reads for the close, management accounts and the systems, not for the number of audit clients you had. Keep the practice years to one paragraph, as the sample does, and use them to show the habits the role needs: working papers, deadlines, a file an auditor can follow.

  4. Not naming the Irish filings

A letter that talks about tax returns in general could have been written for any country. Say ROS, VAT3, the RTD, CT1, PAYE modernisation and the CRO annual return, and say the filings were on time. A reader in Ireland recognises the vocabulary and knows there will be nothing to teach.

  5. Spending a paragraph on the company's reputation

Life sciences and pharma employers in Cork receive a lot of letters that praise them. Replace the praise with one line that shows you understand the role, such as the reporting relationship with a parent company or a known system migration, and spend the words on your own figures.

  6. A letter that is longer than the CV's first page

Four paragraphs and about 370 words is enough to cover a qualification, two employers and the systems. A controller with a close of her own to run will not read a second page. If the letter is long, cut the earliest role to a clause and keep the close.

Questions about the accountant cover letter

How long should an Accountant cover letter be in Ireland?

One A4 page, four paragraphs, around 330 to 380 words. The sample above sits in the middle of that range and still covers practice and industry. Give the qualification, the close and the audit result early and keep the rest for the CV.

Who should I address an accountancy cover letter to?

The financial controller or finance director the role reports to, whose name is usually on the advert or on the company's LinkedIn page; for a practice role, the partner who heads the department. "Dear Ms Mulcahy" with "Yours sincerely" is standard in Ireland. "Dear Sir or Madam" with "Yours faithfully" is the fallback when the vacancy is handled by an agency that will not give a name.

Should I say which institute I qualified with?

Yes, and the year. ACA with Chartered Accountants Ireland, ACCA and CPA Ireland are read slightly differently by different employers, and a controller who trained in one will notice if you leave yours out. Part-qualified applicants should name the remaining exams and the sitting date.

How do I write the letter for a shared-service centre?

Lead with intercompany, multi-currency and the group reporting calendar, name the ERP, and give the number of entities and the deadlines you hit. US GAAP exposure goes in the first paragraph if you have it, because most shared-service centres in Ireland report to an American parent and will ask. The close figures still matter, but the reader wants to know you can work to a group timetable.

What if my audits were not all clean?

Say what the adjustment was and what changed afterwards. One audit adjustment with a fixed control behind it is normal and a controller will respect the honesty; a letter that claims a spotless record and cannot stand it up at reference is worse. The editor keeps the CV and the letter telling the same figures when it tailors them to a vacancy.

Should the letter mention Excel and the ERP?

One sentence, late in the letter, as the sample does with SAP Business One and Sage 50. If the advert names a system as essential and you have it, confirm it; if you do not, say which comparable system you use and leave it at that. The close and the audit result carry the letter, not the software.
