Data Analyst CV Example (UK)

A Data Analyst is hired to turn a manager's question into an answer someone acts on, and a UK CV has to show both halves. The first is the tools: SQL before anything else, then a BI tool (Power BI dominates UK adverts, with Tableau and Looker behind it) and usually Python or R. The second is the decision your analysis changed. Hiring managers in Edinburgh, Leeds or London are wary of analysts whose dashboards nobody opens, so say who used the work and what they did with it.

The Sample CV below is for an analyst with five years across an energy supplier and an online grocer in the Lothians. Each bullet pairs a method with a business result: a churn analysis that changed a tariff offer, a dashboard that retired six weekly spreadsheets, a cleaned dataset that let finance close faster.

Tailor the domain and the tools for each vacancy. A marketing analytics post wants attribution and experiments; an NHS or council post wants reporting against statutory returns; a product post wants funnels and event data. The US counterpart of this page is the data analyst resume example, written for American employers on one Letter page; a UK CV runs to two sides of A4 and is read alongside a short technical task.

Updated . The person and employers in this Sample CV are fictional. Written for applicants in the UK; the page for applicants in the US is the data analyst resume example.

How a UK CV differs

A UK Data Analyst CV differs from the American one in length, tools and the employers who read it. Two sides of A4 are normal rather than one Letter page, and the profile leads with SQL and the BI tool the advert names, which in the UK is Power BI more often than Tableau. The NHS, councils, universities and the civil service are large employers of analysts and recruit through application forms with a person specification and, increasingly, a short technical task sent before the interview. Degree classification counts for graduate roles, and a Level 4 Data Analyst apprenticeship is a recognised route in. GDPR sits behind every dataset, so a line on handling personal data is expected where an American page would say nothing.

For a data analyst in the UK

  1. Power BI first, then the rest

Match the BI tool in the advert exactly. UK adverts name Power BI most often, with Tableau in retail and media and Looker in tech, so lead with the one the employer uses and list the others underneath.

  2. Public sector analysts and statutory returns

If you have worked in the NHS, a council or a university, name the returns and datasets: SUS, HES, the Ofsted or HESA returns. A UK public sector recruiter reads them as proof of context.

  3. The technical task and the portfolio

Many employers send a dataset and a question before interview. A link to two or three written-up analyses on open UK data shows you can do the task before you are asked.

  4. GDPR on the CV

A line saying you handle personal data under GDPR, with pseudonymisation or access controls where you used them, answers the question every UK employer must ask about data.

  5. Degree, apprenticeship or conversion

List a statistics, maths or economics degree with the classification, a Level 4 Data Analyst apprenticeship, or a data bootcamp with the dates. Each is a recognised route, and the reader wants to know which one you took.

Every CV in the UK

A4 paper
Set the page to A4, 210 by 297 millimetres. A Letter-sized PDF prints with odd margins on A4 and reads as imported from the US.
Two pages is normal
Most UK CVs run to two pages. One page suits a first job; three is rare and only for senior roles with a lot to show.
No photo, no date of birth
UK employers do not expect a photo, a date of birth, marital status or nationality on a CV, and most prefer not to see them.
Dates as DD/MM/YYYY
Day first where a full date appears, and month and year for each role: "Mar 2022 – Present". Never the US month-first order.
British English
Organise, programme, centre, licence, specialise. A CV in American spelling reads as written for somewhere else.
Town and postcode area, not a street address
A line such as "Manchester, M4" is enough. A full postal address, and the US-style "City, ST 12345" line, are not expected.

How the CV changes with experience

The same data analyst CV, written at three levels: a profile and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first post in the title

Graduate data analyst with a statistics degree, solid SQL and a portfolio of three analyses on open UK data. Explains findings clearly in writing and in charts.

  • Analysed ten years of council bike-hire data in SQL and presented the busiest routes to a university panel.
  • Built a Power BI report for a food bank that helped it plan weekly orders.
  • Cleaned and merged survey data from three sources for a lecturer's research project.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Data analyst with four years answering product and marketing questions with SQL, Python and Looker for a Scottish fintech, and turning them into decisions.

  • Own weekly reporting on acquisition and retention for the marketing team.
  • Built the funnel analysis that found the sign-up step losing most users.
  • Agreed one set of metric definitions across three dashboards so teams stopped arguing about the numbers.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programmes

Senior data analyst with nine years leading analytics for a business unit, setting metric standards and advising directors on growth decisions.

  • Lead a team of three analysts supporting sales, marketing and finance.
  • Built the company's first demand forecasting model, now used in quarterly planning.
  • Present the monthly performance review and recommendations to the senior leadership team.

Skills to put on the data analyst CV

Hard skills

SQL
It is the first skill tested in almost every data analyst interview in the UK, so show it in the bullets, not only in the skills list.
A BI tool: Power BI, Tableau or Looker
Adverts name one, Power BI most often, and dashboards people use are the visible output of the role.
Python or R
Scripting takes you beyond what a BI tool can do, and it separates analysts ready for harder questions.
Excel and Power Query
Managers still live in spreadsheets, and advanced Excel is often how your work reaches them.
Experimentation and statistics
Reading an A/B test correctly protects a company from a bad decision and is expected of analysts more each year.
Data cleaning and modelling
Most analysis time goes on preparing data, and analysts who build reliable tables save everyone else's time.
GDPR and data handling
UK employers need analysts who know what personal data they can hold and for how long, especially in the NHS, finance and the public sector.

Soft skills

Telling the story in the data
An analysis only matters if someone acts on it, so show the decision your work led to.
Curiosity about the business
The best analysts ask why the question matters before writing a query, and reach more useful answers.
Managing several stakeholders
Analysts serve several teams at once, and ordering the requests well keeps the important questions answered first.

Mistakes that cost data analyst interviews

  1. Dashboards with no users

Built dashboards tells a hiring manager nothing about impact. Say who used them, how often, and what they replaced or decided.

  2. A tool list with no depth

SQL, Python, R, SAS, Tableau and Power BI in one line raises doubts. Keep the tools you use well and show them working in the bullets.

  3. Forgetting the business question

Start the bullet with the question you answered, such as why customers switch after the fixed term ends, not with the query you wrote. It shows you think like the business.

  4. No portfolio for a career changer

If you are new to analytics, two public analyses with clear write-ups do more than a list of courses. Put the link in the contact line.

  5. Vague results

If you cannot share exact figures, give the direction and the decision: switching fell after the change, or the team stopped a campaign that was losing money.

Questions about the data analyst CV

What skills should a Data Analyst put on a UK CV?

SQL, Power BI or another BI tool, Excel and usually Python or R, plus experimentation, data cleaning and GDPR awareness. Add the soft skills that show impact, such as explaining findings to managers.

How do I write a Data Analyst CV with no experience?

Lead with two or three portfolio projects on open UK data, each with the question, the method and what you found. Add your degree with the classification, any apprenticeship or bootcamp, and work where you handled numbers, such as reporting in a part-time job.

Are certifications worth listing?

They help early in your career or when switching field. The Power BI Data Analyst Associate is the one UK adverts mention most; list the exact name and year and back it with a project that uses the tool.

What is the difference between a Data Analyst and a Business Analyst CV?

A Data Analyst CV centres on data, tools and analysis; a Business Analyst CV centres on requirements, processes and stakeholders. Many UK roles blend the two, so read the advert's verbs carefully.

How long should a Data Analyst CV be?

Two sides of A4 for most analysts. Put a link to a portfolio or repository in the contact line rather than adding a third side.

How do I tailor a Data Analyst CV to a vacancy?

Match the BI tool and the domain words in the advert, move the closest project to the top and rewrite the profile for that team's question. Resume Master tailors the CV against a pasted advert in about two minutes, and the keyword checker shows which of the advert's terms the CV still lacks.
