Data Analyst Resume Example

A data analyst is hired to turn questions into answers that someone acts on. The resume has to show both halves: the tools (SQL first, then a BI tool and a scripting language) and the decisions your analysis changed. Hiring managers are wary of analysts who produce dashboards nobody opens, so show who used your work and what they did with it.

The Sample resume below is for a data analyst with five years in retail and subscription businesses. Each bullet pairs a method with a business result: a churn analysis that changed a pricing test, a dashboard that replaced a weekly manual report, a cleaned dataset that let finance close faster.

Tailor the domain and the tools for each posting. A marketing analytics role wants attribution and experiments; an operations role wants forecasting and process data; a product role wants funnels and event data. Name the posting's BI tool exactly (Tableau, Power BI or Looker) and move the matching project up. It is the first skill tested in almost every data analyst interview, so show it in your bullets, not just the skills list.

Mistakes that cost data analyst interviews

  1. Listing dashboards without users

    Built dashboards tells a hiring manager nothing about impact. Say who used them, how often, and what they replaced or decided.

  2. Tool lists with no depth

    Mentioning SQL, Python, R, SAS, Tableau and Power BI together raises doubts. Keep the tools you use well and show them in action in your bullets.

  3. Forgetting the business question

    Start bullets with the question you answered, such as why customers cancel in month two, not with the query you wrote. It shows you think like the business.

  4. No portfolio for career changers

    If you are new to analytics, one or two public analyses with clear write-ups do more than a list of courses. Link them in the header.

  5. Unclear results

    If you cannot share exact figures, describe the direction and the decision: cancellations fell after the change, or the team stopped a campaign that was losing money.
