Project Manager CV Example (New Zealand)

A project manager in New Zealand is hired on one question: when you run something, does it land on time, on budget and with the sponsor, the contractor and the team still talking to each other? Your CV answers with the projects themselves. Give each one a budget, a team size and a deadline, name the outcome, and show how you handled the week it went wrong, because every project has one.

The Sample CV below is for a PRINCE2 and PMP-certified project manager with seven years in energy and construction projects in Auckland. The bullets lead with scope and money, then name the method (a staged rollout, a recovery plan, a renegotiated contract) that produced the result, and they say what the steering committee or the client saw.

Project manager vacancies vary more than the title suggests. A Wellington agency wants a Treasury business case and a steering committee; a construction role wants programme, subcontractors and health and safety; a product company wants agile delivery across several teams. Match the method named in the advert and move the closest project to the top. The US counterpart of this page is the project manager resume example, written for American employers on Letter paper, and the civil engineer CV example shows the technical path into construction project management.

How a New Zealand CV differs

A project manager's CV in New Zealand differs from the American one in the words and the governance it names. PRINCE2 carries as much weight as the PMP, especially in government; the plan is a programme, a change is a variation and the sponsor sits on a steering committee; a public sector project runs through a Treasury business case and a Gateway review; and health and safety on site is a legal duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act, which a construction employer will ask about. Two pages on A4, referees expected at the end, and a line on your right to work if you are not a citizen or resident.

For a project manager in New Zealand

  1. PRINCE2 and PMP both count

Government agencies and councils ask for PRINCE2; private companies often ask for the PMP; product teams want agile. Hold whichever your target market asks for and name it after your name.

  2. Programme, variation, steering committee

Use the New Zealand terms: programme rather than schedule, variation rather than change order, steering committee and sponsor, quantity surveyor and main contractor. They are what a recruiter's keyword match looks for.

  3. Business cases and Gateway reviews

If you have worked in central government, name the Treasury's Better Business Cases framework and any Gateway review you prepared for. They are a currency in Wellington.

  4. Health and safety is a hiring question

A construction or infrastructure employer asks how you managed health and safety on site under the Health and Safety at Work Act. A bullet with the practice and the record answers it before the interview.

  5. Referees, usually a sponsor and a client

Name two referees, such as the sponsor of your last project and a client or contractor, or offer them on request. A New Zealand employer calls them before an offer.

New Zealand prints on A4. Set the page size before you export; a Letter-sized PDF is the usual sign of a US template.
Two pages is normal
Two pages is the norm. One page for a first job; a third page only for a long senior career.
No photo
No photo, date of birth or marital status. New Zealand employers do not expect them and most prefer the CV without them.
Dates as DD/MM/YYYY
Day first where a full date appears, and month and year for each role. Never the US month-first order.
New Zealand English
New Zealand English follows British spelling: organise, programme, centre, licence, specialise.
Suburb and city, not a street address
"Mount Eden, Auckland" is enough on the contact line. A full street address is not expected.

How the CV changes with experience

The same project manager CV, written at three levels: a profile and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first post in the title

Project coordinator with two years supporting programmes, budgets and meetings on IT projects for a Wellington agency, now studying for PRINCE2 Foundation. Organised, calm about deadlines and quick with a status report.

  • Kept the programme and the action log for a 25-site laptop refresh.
  • Prepared the fortnightly status report for the sponsor and flagged risks before they became delays.
  • Coordinated supplier deliveries and site access for the installation teams.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Project manager with five years delivering software and infrastructure projects on time for a district health service in Christchurch.

  • Deliver four to six concurrent projects a year, each under NZ$1 million.
  • Led the rollout of a new patient scheduling system to 18 clinics with training for 350 staff.
  • Introduced a risk register that the steering committee reviews at every meeting.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programmes

Senior project manager with twelve years leading multi-million-dollar programmes and mentoring project managers in a central government delivery office.

  • Led a NZ$18 million data centre consolidation across two sites with no unplanned outage.
  • Set the project standards and templates for the agency's delivery office.
  • Mentor four project managers and review every business case above NZ$1 million.

Skills to put on the project manager CV

Hard skills

Programming and planning
A realistic programme is the foundation of every project, and a hiring manager asks how you built one and held it.
Budget and cost control
Money is how a sponsor judges success, so the budget size and the variance belong in your bullets.
Risk and issue management
The best project managers see trouble early, and a record of risks caught shows judgement.
Vendor and contract management
Most projects depend on a supplier or a contractor, and managing the contract well protects cost and programme.
PRINCE2, PMP and agile
Government in New Zealand runs on PRINCE2 governance and private companies often ask for the PMP, so naming both widens the vacancies you fit.
Tools such as MS Project, Jira or Procore
Adverts name one, and the keyword match gets you past the first screen.
Reporting to a steering committee
Clear status reports build trust with a sponsor and keep decisions moving.

Soft skills

Leadership without line authority
Project teams rarely report to you, so results depend on influence and on the relationships you keep.
Communication
Most project problems are communication problems, and handling them well is the core of the job.
Composure under pressure
Deadlines slip and priorities change, and a hiring manager wants someone who steadies the team.

Mistakes that cost project manager interviews

  1. No budgets or team sizes

Managed projects is too vague to place. Give the budget, the number of people or sites and the length of the project so a reader can judge your level.

  2. Only the projects that went well

Hiring managers know projects go wrong. A bullet about a project you brought back on programme shows more skill than a smooth one.

  3. The certification as the whole story

PRINCE2 or the PMP gets you through the filter; the interview is about the projects. Put the certification in the headline and let the bullets prove it.

  4. American terms for New Zealand projects

Schedule, change order, general contractor and a one-page layout on Letter paper tell a reader the CV came from a US template. Use programme, variation, main contractor and A4.

  5. Describing the process, not the outcome

Held weekly meetings is activity. Write what the meetings produced: decisions made faster, risks closed, a go-live date held.

Questions about the project manager CV

Do I need PRINCE2 or the PMP to get a project manager job in New Zealand?

Not always, but government and councils usually ask for PRINCE2 and larger private employers often ask for the PMP. If you hold one, put it after your name; if you are studying, say when you expect to sit the exam.

How do I write project manager bullets?

Start with the scope (budget, team, sites), then what you did, then the result in time, money or quality. One bullet per major project reads better than a list of duties.

What should a project manager CV summary include?

Your years of experience, the type and size of projects you run, your certification and one standout result, such as a recovered project or a large rollout delivered on time.

How do I move from project coordinator to project manager?

Show the parts of projects you already owned: a workstream, a supplier, a budget line, a programme. Present them as results and add PRINCE2 Foundation or the CAPM.

How long should a project manager CV be?

Two pages. The current project with its budget and outcome belongs on the first page; a senior project manager may add a short project list after the CV.

Should I list agile experience as a project manager?

Yes, if you have run or supported agile teams. Many New Zealand organisations use hybrid methods, and showing you can work both ways widens the roles you fit.
