Store Manager CV Example (New Zealand)

A hardware and building supplies store in New Zealand is two businesses under one roof: a retail shop for the weekend DIY customer and a trade business that supplies builders on account from before seven in the morning. The regional manager or franchise owner reading a Store Manager CV wants to know the split between trade and retail sales, the size of the yard and the team, and what happened to sales against budget, wage cost, stock loss and safety while you ran it. In New Zealand the safety part is personal: the Health and Safety at Work Act puts duties on the officer in charge, and a store manager is expected to say how they met them.

The Sample CV below is for a Store Manager with twelve years in Northland and Auckland retail, now running a large-format hardware and trade store outside Whangārei with a drive-through timber yard, a trade desk and a team of 46. Its bullets give the store's shape and the trade share of sales, then the results and the change behind each: the trade desk hours that won back accounts, the stocktake process that cut loss, the yard traffic plan that ended near misses, and the two department managers who now run stores of their own.

Tailor it to the operator. A franchise or co-operative store wants an owner's eye on margin and the local trade relationships; a corporate chain wants compliance with its audits, systems and promotional calendar; a supermarket wants fresh, wages and the seven-day roster; a fashion chain wants conversion and visual standards. The US counterpart of this page is the store manager resume example, written for American retail chains on a single Letter page; a New Zealand Store Manager CV runs to two or three pages of A4 with referees at the end, and the Chronological template keeps each store and its results in order.

Kamo, Whangāreibradley.kerslake@example.com022 555 0160

Summary

Store Manager with twelve years in New Zealand retail and six running stores, currently a large-format hardware and building supplies store north of Whangārei with a drive-through timber yard, a trade desk serving around 400 account customers and a team of 46 across retail, trade and yard. Grew trade sales ahead of budget two years running by rebuilding the trade desk around the builders' day, cut stock loss at the annual stocktake to the lowest in the region, and ran a yard traffic plan that took near-miss reports to zero over a full year. Two of my department managers have gone on to run stores of their own.

Experience

Store Manager, Hikurangi Road Hardware and Trade

– Present

Whangārei

  • Run a large-format hardware and trade store with a drive-through yard, a trade desk and a team of 46, with trade accounts making up a little over half of sales and a seven-day retail floor for the rest.
  • Moved the trade desk opening to six-thirty and put a dedicated trade team on the first two hours, winning back fourteen lapsed builder accounts in the first year and growing trade sales ahead of budget in each of the last two.
  • Rebuilt the annual stocktake around a rolling count of the yard and the high-loss aisles, taking stock loss to the lowest of the nine stores in the region for two years running.
  • Wrote and ran the yard traffic management plan under the Health and Safety at Work Act, separating forklift lanes from customer vehicles; near-miss reports went from a monthly occurrence to none over a full year.
  • Hold wage cost against budget through a roster built on trade and retail peaks, with the Holidays Act public holiday and alternative day entitlements applied correctly after an audit of the previous roster.
  • Developed five department managers through the group's programme; two were promoted to run stores of their own in Northland and Auckland.
Assistant Store Manager, then Store Manager, Kaipara Flats Building Centre

–

Warkworth

  • Appointed Store Manager after two years, running a mid-sized building centre with a yard, a kitchen and bathroom showroom and a team of 22 serving a fast-growing district.
  • Took the store through a rebrand and a new point-of-sale system without a lost trading day, retraining the whole team over three weeks of evening sessions.
  • Introduced a local builders' breakfast each quarter that became the store's main source of new trade accounts.
  • Cut shrink at stocktake by tightening the trade pick-up process so every load leaving the yard matched an invoice.
Department Manager, Sporting Goods and Footwear, Albany Ridge Sports Megastore

–

Albany, Auckland

  • Ran the footwear and team sports departments with a team of nine in a large-format store, owning ordering, markdowns, the seasonal range change and the department's sales against budget.
  • Acted as duty manager across the store on weekends, including opening, the cash office and incident reporting.
  • Reduced footwear returns by introducing a fit service and training the team on it.

How a New Zealand CV differs

A New Zealand Store Manager CV is read by a regional manager, a franchise owner or a specialist retail recruiter, and it runs to two or three pages of A4 with each store described before its results and referees named at the end. The hardware and building supplies sector here is largely franchised or co-operative, so the CV needs to say whether the store was corporate, franchise or owner-operated, what it had (yard, trade desk, showroom, garden centre) and how many people worked in it. Safety takes more space than in the American resume this page pairs with: the Health and Safety at Work Act makes the manager's duties explicit, and an owner will ask what you did about them.

For a store manager in New Zealand

  1. The store before the result

Open each role with the format, the departments, the trade and retail split, the yard and the headcount, then the results. A regional manager cannot weigh a stock loss result without knowing whether it came from a trade yard or a fashion floor.

  2. Trade and retail split

Say what share of sales came from trade accounts and how many accounts the store served. It tells the reader which business you actually ran and whether you can hold builders as well as weekend customers.

  3. Safety as your own record

Name the plans you wrote and ran, the training your team held and the notifiable events or near-miss results over your time. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act a store manager carries duties personally, and an employer reads for evidence that you understood that.

  4. The Holidays Act and the roster

Mention public holidays, alternative days and seven-day rostering, and any audit or correction you handled. New Zealand employers have had expensive Holidays Act problems, and a manager who gets it right protects them.

  5. Referees named at the end

Two referees, usually your current regional manager or owner and a previous one, listed with their role or offered on request. New Zealand employers ring them before making an offer, so warn them first.

A4 paper
New Zealand prints on A4. Set the page size before you export; a Letter-sized PDF is the usual sign of a US template.
Two pages is normal
Two pages is the norm. One page for a first job; a third page only for a long senior career.
No photo
No photo, date of birth or marital status. New Zealand employers do not expect them and most prefer the CV without them.
Dates as DD/MM/YYYY
Day first where a full date appears, and month and year for each role. Never the US month-first order.
New Zealand English
New Zealand English follows British spelling: organise, programme, centre, licence, specialise.
Suburb and city, not a street address
"Mount Eden, Auckland" is enough on the contact line. A full street address is not expected.

How the CV changes with experience

The same store manager CV, written at three levels: a profile and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first post in the title

Assistant Store Manager in a mid-sized hardware store with five years on the floor and two running departments, ready for a first Store Manager role in a smaller store or a new site.

  • Run the store on the manager's days off, including the trade desk, the cash office and the daily yard safety check.
  • Own the garden and outdoor department's ordering, range and sales against budget.
  • Rostered the whole store for the last two Christmas periods within the wage budget.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Store Manager with six years running a mid-sized building centre with a yard, a showroom and a team of 24, trading seven days in a growing district.

  • Grew trade sales ahead of budget three years running by building relationships with the district's builders.
  • Passed every group audit and had no notifiable safety events in six years.
  • Promoted three team members to department manager through the group's programme.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programmes

Regional Manager for nine hardware and trade stores across Northland and the North Shore, accountable for their combined sales, margin, safety and management teams.

  • Lead nine store managers and around 320 staff, with monthly trading and safety reviews against each store's budget.
  • Opened a new large-format store from site selection to the first trading week.
  • Introduced a regional stock loss programme that cut shrink across every store in two years.

Skills to put on the store manager CV

Hard skills

Sales against budget and wage cost
A regional manager or franchise owner reads a Store Manager CV on those two lines first, and a store that beat budget while holding wages is the result they are looking for.
Trade accounts
In hardware and building supplies the trade business is most of the margin, and a manager who can win and keep builder accounts is hired ahead of one who only knows the retail floor.
Health and Safety at Work Act duties
A yard with forklifts, saws and customer vehicles is a high-risk workplace, and the store manager is the person WorkSafe would ask about it, so owners want to see the plan you ran.
Stocktake and shrink
Stock loss is reported to the owner and the group after every count, and a manager with a method for reducing it is trusted with a larger store.
Rostering under the Holidays Act
Public holidays, alternative days and seven-day trading make New Zealand rostering a legal matter as much as a cost one, and getting it wrong is expensive to fix.
Group systems and audits
Each group or franchise has its own point-of-sale, ordering and audit programme, and naming the ones you have run on shortens your induction.
Developing managers
Groups promote the store managers who produce department managers and future store managers, and naming them is the clearest evidence you can give.

Soft skills

Talking to builders
Trade customers judge a store by whether its manager understands their day, and a manager who can stand at the trade desk at six-thirty and hold a conversation keeps the accounts.
Leading a large mixed team
A big store is yard staff, trade specialists, part-time retail team members and department managers, and holding one standard across all of them is the job.
Steady under an owner's eye
A franchise owner or a regional manager watches the numbers daily, and they notice the manager who explains a bad week honestly and fixes it.

Mistakes that cost store manager interviews

  1. Results with no store behind them

Grew sales and cut costs could be any store in the country. Give the format, the trade and retail split, the yard, the headcount and the budget, so each result sits on a store the reader can picture.

  2. Safety left out

A store with forklifts and saws is a high-risk workplace, and a Store Manager CV that never mentions the Health and Safety at Work Act reads as one that did not take it seriously. Give the plan, the training and the near-miss or notifiable event record.

  3. Only the retail floor

In hardware and building supplies the trade business is most of the margin. A CV that talks about weekend customers and displays but never about accounts, the trade desk or the yard reads as a manager of half a store.

  4. Quoting the exact turnover

Sales figures belong to the owner or the group. Use sales against budget, growth and bands, which say what you achieved without handing a competitor the numbers.

  5. No people results

Groups and franchise owners promote the managers who grow the next ones. Name the team members you made department managers and the department managers who went on to run stores.

  6. Copying the American store manager page

District, associates, loss prevention and a one-page layout belong to the US example this page pairs with. A New Zealand CV says region, team members, stock loss and stocktake, runs to two or three pages and ends with referees.

Write bullets with the XYZ formula: what changed, the number that shows it, and how you did it, in one line.

Questions about the store manager CV

How long should a Store Manager CV be in New Zealand?

Two pages for most store managers, three for a large-format store or a regional role with several sites. The first page carries the profile, the current store with its numbers and your certificates; the following pages carry earlier stores, education and referees.

Should I include sales figures?

Use sales against budget and growth, and a band if you want to show scale, rather than the exact figures. Owners regard the numbers as theirs, and the next employer will wonder what you would print about them.

What qualifications do store managers list in New Zealand?

Most came up through the floor and list NCEA with the group's management programme. A New Zealand Diploma in Business at Level 5 or a retail management apprenticeship shows you studied the finance and employment side, and a forklift endorsement, first aid and health and safety representative training matter in any store with a yard.

What should an Assistant Store Manager's CV show before the first store?

Write the days you ran the store alone, the department you owned end to end with its budget result, the roster you built and the safety checks you ran. Owners give a first store to the assistant who already describes those as results, often a smaller store or a new site first.

Do I need to address the Health and Safety at Work Act on a retail CV?

For a store with a yard, saws, ladders or forklifts, yes. Give the plan you ran, the training your team held and the record over your time. For a fashion or phone store one line on the store's safety routine is enough, but leaving it out altogether is noticed.

What changes on the CV when I apply to a different retail chain?

Move the most comparable store to the top, use the advert's title in the headline and rename departments and roles in the words that retailer uses. Resume Master rewrites the CV around a pasted advert in that order and keeps the numbers exactly as you gave them.
