Staff Nurse CV Example (UK)

NHS trusts and private hospitals read a Staff Nurse CV in a fixed order: NMC registration, the ward or specialty, then evidence of safe, skilled care. Put your PIN and your band where a recruiter sees them first, name the ward and patient group for every post, and show the acuity and the bed numbers you work with, because those tell a ward manager what you are ready for on day one.

The Sample CV below is for a Band 5 Staff Nurse with six years on acute medical and respiratory wards at two trusts in the north of England. Its bullets pair clinical work with the measures a matron is held to: falls, pressure ulcers, discharge delays and the Friends and Family Test, plus mentoring students and leading shifts.

Tailor it to each vacancy on NHS Jobs or Trac. An ITU post wants level 2 and level 3 skills; A&E wants triage and pace; a community post wants independence and care planning; a private hospital wants elective pathways and patient experience. Match the trust's named systems, since many list Cerner or EPIC. The US counterpart of this page is the registered nurse resume example, written for American hospitals on Letter paper; the Civic template keeps a CV plain for NHS application portals.

Updated . The person and employers in this Sample CV are fictional. Written for applicants in the UK; the page for applicants in the US is the registered nurse resume example.

How a UK CV differs

A nursing CV in the UK is not the American resume with the spelling changed. The title is Staff Nurse with a band, not Registered Nurse with a state licence; registration is with the NMC and is shown as a PIN, not a licence number; and the hospital is a trust, a ward and a specialty rather than a bed count and a unit. The page runs to two sides of A4, and the NHS application form will ask you to paste much of it into a supporting statement, so write it in sentences that survive the paste.

For a staff nurse in the UK

  1. Band and title, not licence and state

Write the post as the NHS does: Staff Nurse (Band 5), Senior Staff Nurse (Band 6), Ward Manager (Band 7). An American RN resume leads with the state licence; a UK CV leads with the NMC and the band.

  2. NMC PIN, revalidation and the field of practice

Give the field (RN Adult, RN Child, RN Mental Health), the year you registered and the year you last revalidated. Write "PIN on request" rather than the number itself on a public CV.

  3. Two sides of A4, no photo, no date of birth

A Band 5 CV fits two sides. Leave out a photo, your date of birth and your nationality; the application form collects what the trust needs for pre-employment checks.

  4. Mandatory training in date

ILS, safeguarding adults and children, moving and handling, and infection prevention are expected and checked at interview. List them with the year so the ward can see nothing has lapsed.

  5. Supporting statement, not cover letter

NHS Jobs and Trac ask for a supporting statement against the person specification. Keep your CV bullets in whole sentences so they can be pasted straight into it.

Every CV in the UK

A4 paper
Set the page to A4, 210 by 297 millimetres. A Letter-sized PDF prints with odd margins on A4 and reads as imported from the US.
Two pages is normal
Most UK CVs run to two pages. One page suits a first job; three is rare and only for senior roles with a lot to show.
No photo, no date of birth
UK employers do not expect a photo, a date of birth, marital status or nationality on a CV, and most prefer not to see them.
Dates as DD/MM/YYYY
Day first where a full date appears, and month and year for each role: "Mar 2022 – Present". Never the US month-first order.
British English
Organise, programme, centre, licence, specialise. A CV in American spelling reads as written for somewhere else.
Town and postcode area, not a street address
A line such as "Manchester, M4" is enough. A full postal address, and the US-style "City, ST 12345" line, are not expected.

How the CV changes with experience

The same staff nurse CV, written at three levels: a profile and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first post in the title

Newly qualified adult nurse with a BSc (Hons) and a final management placement on an acute medical ward. NMC registered, preceptorship ready, keen to join a supportive ward team.

  • Completed a 12-week management placement caring for up to six medical patients under supervision, including admissions and discharges.
  • Delivered discharge teaching to patients and carers using teach-back, with the ward sister signing off every episode.
  • Worked as a healthcare assistant on the bank for two years during the degree, building confident personal care and observations.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Band 5 Staff Nurse with four years on a busy surgical ward, confident with post-operative care, epidurals and patient education.

  • Care for six to seven post-operative patients per shift across general surgery and urology.
  • Sit on the ward practice group and helped rewrite the pain assessment guideline.
  • Supervise and assess student nurses during their surgical placement.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programmes

Ward manager (Band 7) with twelve years of clinical and leadership experience, accountable for staffing, quality and a 32-bed ward's budget.

  • Manage a team of 48 nurses and healthcare assistants with responsibility for rostering, appraisals and a ward budget of £2.4 million.
  • Reduced agency spend through a revised roster and a retention plan for newly qualified nurses.
  • Lead the ward's quality programme, including falls, pressure ulcers and infection control audits for the CQC.

Skills to put on the staff nurse CV

Hard skills

Patient assessment and NEWS2
Every trust escalates on NEWS2, and a nurse who assesses well and escalates early is the one a ward manager trusts with the sickest bay.
Medicines management and IV therapy
Safe administration is the baseline; IV competencies, controlled drugs and specialist infusions show you can take the higher-acuity patients.
Specialty skills such as NIV, telemetry or triage
Wards recruit for specific skills, and naming yours matches you to the vacancy a trust is actually trying to fill.
Electronic patient records
Trusts name their system in the person specification, and experience with it shortens your supernumerary period.
Discharge planning
Delayed discharges are measured on every ward, and a nurse who moves patients safely home is valued by the whole site.
ILS and mandatory training
ILS, safeguarding and moving and handling are required, and listing them in date shows you can start without a training backlog.

Soft skills

Calm under pressure
Deteriorating patients and short-staffed shifts happen on every ward, and interviewers listen for how you kept your head.
Compassion
The Friends and Family Test is read by the matron every month, and patients remember how they were spoken to.
Teamwork and handover
Nursing runs on handover, and a nurse who hands over clearly keeps the next shift safe.

Mistakes that cost staff nurse interviews

  1. NMC registration buried

A nurse recruiter checks the register before anything else. Put RN Adult and NMC registered in the headline, and the registration year in a registration and training section near the top.

  2. No ward, band or patient numbers

Staff Nurse says little by itself. Name the ward, the specialty, the bed count, the band and the number of patients you take per shift, so the manager can picture you on the rota.

  3. Listing what every nurse does

Administered medicines and recorded observations describe the whole profession. Show what is yours: link nurse roles, audits, mentoring, taking charge and the results of the ward's quality work.

  4. Leaving out the electronic record

Trusts name Cerner, EPIC, SystmOne or EMIS in the person specification. Name the ones you have used so the shortlisting screen matches them.

  5. American spelling and American titles

A CV with American spellings, a state nursing licence and the title Registered Nurse, BSN reads as written for somewhere else. Use British spelling and the titles the trust uses in its own advert.

Questions about the staff nurse CV

Where do I put my NMC PIN on a CV?

Write NMC registered, RN Adult in the headline and give the registration and revalidation years in a registration and training section. Put PIN on request rather than the number on a CV you upload to a job board.

How long should a Staff Nurse CV be?

Two sides of A4 for a Band 5 or Band 6 nurse. Newly qualified nurses often fit one side; a Band 7 with several wards and a management record may need a third, but rarely.

Do I still need a CV if the trust uses an application form?

Yes. NHS Jobs and Trac forms ask for your employment history and a supporting statement, which is your CV restructured against the person specification. Writing the CV first makes the form faster and the statement stronger, and agencies and private hospitals ask for the CV itself.

What should a newly qualified nurse put on a CV?

Your degree and the university, your NMC registration date, your placements with the ward type and hours, your management placement in detail, and any healthcare assistant or bank work. Preceptorship readiness and a clean mandatory training record matter more than a long skills list.

Should I list referees?

Write referees available on request. The application form will ask for two, usually your current ward manager and a previous one, and you will be asked before they are contacted.

How do I tailor a nursing CV to a new specialty?

Lead with the transferable skills the new ward's person specification asks for, such as recognising a deteriorating patient for critical care or triage for A&E, and add the relevant competencies and courses you have completed. Paste the advert into Resume Master and it rewrites the CV against it in about two minutes.
