Band 5 Nurse CV Example (UK)

A first Band 5 post is the one application where your placements do the work that years of experience do for everyone else. Ward managers shortlisting newly qualified nurses look for three things: that your NMC registration is booked or confirmed, that your placements match their ward, and that you can describe real patients and real decisions from your sign-off placement. A CV that lists modules and a degree classification and stops there gets passed over for one that reads like a nurse already on the rota.

The Sample CV below is for a student nurse in the final months of an adult nursing degree, applying for Band 5 posts with a preceptorship programme on surgical and medical wards. It gives each placement its own entry with the ward, the hours and what she was signed off to do, puts her healthcare support work alongside them.

Most trusts recruit newly qualified nurses through NHS Jobs or Trac, often in a single cohort campaign months before qualification, and the supporting information box carries as much weight as the CV. Write the CV first, then lift its strongest lines into the supporting information against the person specification. The US counterpart of this page is the registered nurse resume example, written for an experienced American hospital nurse rather than a UK graduate entering preceptorship; the Civic template keeps the layout plain enough for an NHS portal to read cleanly.

Updated . The person and employers in this Sample CV are fictional. Written for applicants in the UK; the page for applicants in the US is the registered nurse resume example.

How a UK CV differs

A newly qualified nurse in the UK applies differently from both an experienced Staff Nurse and an American graduate. Most trusts run cohort recruitment for final-year students, sometimes with a conditional offer made before your PIN arrives, and the post is advertised as Band 5 with a preceptorship programme. The CV leads with your expected NMC registration date, then your placements in reverse order, then any healthcare support work. On NHS Jobs and Trac the same evidence goes into the supporting information, written against the person specification, so the CV and the statement have to agree.

For a band 5 nurse in the UK

  1. Expected registration date up front

Write the field of nursing (Adult, Mental Health, Children's or Learning Disability) and when you expect your PIN. Trusts can offer a post subject to registration, but they need to see the date.

  2. Each placement as its own entry

Give the ward or service, the length in weeks and two or three things you did. Put your sign-off placement first and in the most detail, because that is the one closest to the job.

  3. Preceptorship named in the headline

Say you are looking for a Band 5 post with preceptorship. It tells the manager you understand the first year is supported and that you are applying to the right programme.

  4. Healthcare support work counts

Bank Healthcare Assistant shifts, care home work or a Band 3 post before the degree are real clinical experience. List them with the band and the setting, not under hobbies.

  5. Supporting information against the person specification

Write one short paragraph per essential criterion and use the same placement examples as your CV. A shortlisting panel reads both side by side.

Every CV in the UK

A4 paper
Set the page to A4, 210 by 297 millimetres. A Letter-sized PDF prints with odd margins on A4 and reads as imported from the US.
Two pages is normal
Most UK CVs run to two pages. One page suits a first job; three is rare and only for senior roles with a lot to show.
No photo, no date of birth
UK employers do not expect a photo, a date of birth, marital status or nationality on a CV, and most prefer not to see them.
Dates as DD/MM/YYYY
Day first where a full date appears, and month and year for each role: "Mar 2022 – Present". Never the US month-first order.
British English
Organise, programme, centre, licence, specialise. A CV in American spelling reads as written for somewhere else.
Town and postcode area, not a street address
A line such as "Manchester, M4" is enough. A full postal address, and the US-style "City, ST 12345" line, are not expected.

How the CV changes with experience

The same band 5 nurse CV, written at three levels: a profile and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first post in the title

Newly qualified children's nurse with placements on a paediatric assessment unit, a neonatal unit and a school nursing team, applying for a first Band 5 post on a children's ward with preceptorship.

  • Cared for up to four children on a paediatric ward during the sign-off placement, involving parents in every care plan.
  • Calculated and checked weight-based doses with a registered nurse on every medicine round.
  • Ran a hand hygiene session for a primary school class during the school nursing placement.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Band 5 nurse eighteen months into the role, preceptorship complete, now taking a bay of six on a general surgical ward and ready for the in-charge development programme.

  • Completed the trust preceptorship and the IV and blood transfusion competencies within the first year.
  • Take a bay of six surgical patients on days and nights and act as practice supervisor for first-year students.
  • Joined the ward's falls group and audit bed rails and lying and standing blood pressures monthly.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programmes

Registered nurse returning to practice after a career break, back on the NMC register through a return to practice course and applying for a Band 5 post with a supported start.

  • Completed a university return to practice course with 450 supervised hours on a medical ward.
  • Refreshed IV, medicines and NEWS2 competencies and re-validated with the NMC.
  • Bring eight years of earlier ward experience, including shift co-ordination on a stroke unit.

Skills to put on the band 5 nurse CV

Hard skills

Recognising and escalating deterioration
A ward manager hiring a newly qualified nurse wants proof you will spot a sick patient and speak up; one specific NEWS2 example is worth more than a list of modules.
Medicines administration
Drug rounds are where new nurses are slowest and most anxious, so naming the routes you were signed off for tells the manager how much supervision you will need.
Clinical skills from the passport
Venepuncture, cannulation, catheterisation and ECGs vary between universities; listing what is signed off saves the ward a training gap in your first weeks.
Discharge planning
Every ward is measured on flow, and a new nurse who can complete a discharge safely and teach a patient before they go home is useful from week one.
Infection prevention and control
It is in every person specification for a Band 5 post and is checked on the ward from the first shift.
Electronic records and e-prescribing
Trusts name their system in the advert; having used it on placement shortens your supernumerary period.

Soft skills

Willingness to ask
Preceptorship assumes you will not know everything, and managers listen for a candidate who says when they are unsure.
Resilience
The first year as a registered nurse is hard, and evidence that you handled a difficult placement or a death well reassures the panel.
Communication with families
Newly qualified nurses spend a lot of time explaining, and a calm, clear example from placement shows you can do it.

Mistakes that cost band 5 nurse interviews

  1. A list of modules instead of patients

Anatomy, pharmacology and research methods are on every nursing degree. The manager wants to read what you did on the ward: the patients you cared for, a deterioration you escalated, a discharge you managed.

  2. Hiding the registration date

If the panel cannot see when you will be on the register, they cannot plan your start or your supernumerary weeks. Put it in the headline and in a registration line near the top.

  3. Every placement written the same way

Copying one paragraph across five placements suggests you learned the same thing everywhere. Give each placement its own detail and lead with the one that matches the ward you are applying to.

  4. Leaving out care work

Students often drop bank or care home shifts because they were not nursing. They prove you can cope with a twelve-hour shift and personal care.

  5. A CV that contradicts the supporting information

Panels compare them. If your statement mentions a sepsis example and your CV does not, or the dates differ, it looks careless. Write the CV first and build the statement from it.

Write bullets with the XYZ formula: what changed, the number that shows it, and how you did it, in one line.

Questions about the band 5 nurse CV

Can I apply for a Band 5 post before I have my NMC PIN?

Yes. Many trusts recruit final-year students months before qualification and make a conditional offer subject to registration. You usually start as a Band 4 or on a temporary contract until the PIN arrives, then move to Band 5 pay.

How long should a newly qualified nurse CV be?

Two pages of A4. Your placements fill most of it, so keep education to the degree and dissertation title and leave out school qualifications unless the advert asks for them.

What is preceptorship and should I mention it?

Preceptorship is a structured first year as a registered nurse with a named preceptor, protected learning time and competencies to complete. Mention that you are looking for it, and if you are applying to a named programme, use its name.

Which placement should I write about in most detail?

Your sign-off placement, because it shows you working at the level of a newly registered nurse. After that, give most space to any placement in the same specialty as the post you are applying for.

What do I write in the NHS Jobs supporting information?

Take the person specification's essential criteria in order and give a short, specific example for each, drawn from your placements and care work. Keep it to the word limit and make sure every example also appears on your CV.

Can I use the same CV for every trust?

Keep one master CV and change the headline, the summary and the order of placements for each ward. Paste the advert into Resume Master and it rewrites the CV against that trust's person specification.

Every application goes out fitting the vacancy.
