Advanced Nurse Practitioner CV Example (UK)

Advanced Nurse Practitioner posts are shortlisted by a clinical lead, often a GP partner or a consultant nurse, who reads the CV for scope rather than tasks. They want to know which patients you see without a doctor, what you can prescribe, how far through the MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice you are, and whether your work covers all four pillars: clinical practice, leadership, education and research. A list of duties from your last Band 6 post will not answer any of those.

The Sample CV below is for a Band 8a ANP who runs a same-day clinic in a large GP practice and works sessions in an urgent treatment centre. Its bullets give caseload and autonomy in concrete terms, show a prescribing audit and a teaching role, and name the multi-professional framework her MSc was mapped to.

Tailor it to the setting. A primary care post wants minor illness, long-term conditions and home visits; an urgent treatment centre wants minor injuries, X-ray requesting and pace; an acute medicine ACP role wants the front door, clerking and a deteriorating patient on a ward. The US counterpart of this page is the registered nurse resume example; an American nurse practitioner works under a state licence and board certification, which have no direct UK equivalent. The Harbor template suits a senior clinical CV with a dense first page.

Updated . The person and employers in this Sample CV are fictional. Written for applicants in the UK; the page for applicants in the US is the registered nurse resume example.

How a UK CV differs

In the UK, advanced practice is defined by level, not by a separate licence. A nurse works as an ANP or ACP because they hold a master's degree in advanced clinical practice, or equivalent, and practise across the four pillars set out in the national frameworks, with NMC registration and a recorded prescribing qualification underneath. The CV is longer than an American nurse practitioner's, usually two to three pages of A4, and leads with level, setting and prescribing status. Posts are advertised on NHS Jobs, through primary care networks or directly by GP practices, at Band 8a or a practice salary benchmarked against it.

For a advanced nurse practitioner in the UK

  1. The four pillars, visibly

Make sure the CV shows clinical practice, leadership and management, education, and research. Panels map your bullets to the pillars, so a CV that is all clinical looks like a Band 6 role with a new title.

  2. Prescribing status in the registration line

Write NMC registered with a recorded V300 annotation and the year. A trainee should give the module dates and their designated prescribing practitioner.

  3. MSc and its framework

Name the MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice and that it is mapped to the national framework, or say how far through it you are. Some employers also ask whether you are credentialed or on the advanced practice directory.

  4. Scope in plain terms

Say which patients you see without a doctor: undifferentiated adults, children over a certain age, minor injuries, home visits. Clinical leads hire to fill gaps in their rota, so specific scope gets you matched.

  5. Trainee and qualified posts are different jobs

A trainee ACP post is a funded training role with a supervisor, and its CV shows readiness to learn. A qualified post expects independent practice from the start. Be clear which you are applying for.

Every CV in the UK

A4 paper
Set the page to A4, 210 by 297 millimetres. A Letter-sized PDF prints with odd margins on A4 and reads as imported from the US.
Two pages is normal
Most UK CVs run to two pages. One page suits a first job; three is rare and only for senior roles with a lot to show.
No photo, no date of birth
UK employers do not expect a photo, a date of birth, marital status or nationality on a CV, and most prefer not to see them.
Dates as DD/MM/YYYY
Day first where a full date appears, and month and year for each role: "Mar 2022 – Present". Never the US month-first order.
British English
Organise, programme, centre, licence, specialise. A CV in American spelling reads as written for somewhere else.
Town and postcode area, not a street address
A line such as "Manchester, M4" is enough. A full postal address, and the US-style "City, ST 12345" line, are not expected.

How the CV changes with experience

The same advanced nurse practitioner CV, written at three levels: a profile and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first post in the title

Band 7 practice nurse starting a trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner post, with long-term condition clinics, a prescribing qualification in progress and two years of minor illness experience.

  • Run asthma, COPD and diabetes reviews for a practice of 11,000 patients.
  • See minor illness appointments under a GP supervisor while completing the first year of the MSc.
  • Studying the V300 prescribing module with a designated prescribing practitioner.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Advanced Clinical Practitioner in acute medicine, clerking patients at the front door and on the ward with the medical registrar's oversight.

  • Clerk and treat admissions on the acute medical unit, requesting investigations and starting management plans.
  • Take a share of the ward's deteriorating patient calls on the out-of-hours rota.
  • Teach foundation doctors and nurses on the unit's simulation programme.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programmes

Consultant Nurse and lead ACP for a primary care network, responsible for the advanced practice workforce across six practices.

  • Lead the governance, supervision and credentialing of 14 ACPs across the network.
  • Built the network's trainee ACP pathway with the regional training hub.
  • Publish and present audit work at regional advanced practice events.

Skills to put on the advanced nurse practitioner CV

Hard skills

Assessment of undifferentiated patients
The ANP role exists to see patients without a diagnosis attached, and the clinical lead wants to know which presentations you manage on your own.
Independent prescribing
A recorded V300 is close to essential for a qualified ANP post, and the panel will ask about your scope of prescribing and how you keep it current.
Clinical examination and diagnostics
Requesting and interpreting bloods, ECGs and X-rays is what separates advanced practice from Band 6 work, so say which you do.
Long-term conditions and frailty
Primary care posts lean heavily on these, and an ANP who can prevent an admission saves the practice and the hospital time.
Audit and quality improvement
The research pillar is the one most CVs leave thin; a completed audit cycle with a change in practice fills it.
Education and clinical supervision
Most ANP posts include supervising trainees or students, and a named supervision role shows the education pillar in action.

Soft skills

Holding clinical risk
An ANP decides alone whether a patient goes home, and the panel listens for safety-netting and sound judgement.
Leadership without a title
ANPs often lead change across doctors and nurses without line management, and an example of that is persuasive.
Clear documentation
Your notes are read by GPs, hospitals and coroners, and a clinical lead values a practitioner whose records stand up.

Mistakes that cost advanced nurse practitioner interviews

  1. Describing a Band 6 job

Giving injections, running clinics to a protocol and taking bloods are not advanced practice. Lead with assessment, diagnosis, prescribing and the decisions you make without a doctor.

  2. Missing the prescribing detail

A panel will not assume you can prescribe. Write the V300 annotation and the year, and the areas you prescribe in, so the clinical lead can see your scope at a glance.

  3. No research or audit at all

The research pillar is easy to forget in a busy clinical role. One completed audit, a pathway you wrote or a teaching evaluation with its findings is enough to show it.

  4. Copying an American nurse practitioner CV

Board certification, state licences and collaborative agreements do not exist in the UK. Use NMC registration, the MSc, the framework and a UK title such as ANP or ACP.

  5. One CV for primary care and acute posts

A GP practice wants minor illness, long-term conditions and home visits; an acute trust wants clerking and the deteriorating patient. Reorder your bullets for each setting.

Write bullets with the XYZ formula: what changed, the number that shows it, and how you did it, in one line.

Questions about the advanced nurse practitioner CV

What is the difference between an ANP and an ACP?

ACP is the umbrella term for any registered professional, nurse, paramedic, pharmacist or physiotherapist, working at advanced level. ANP is the nursing title many employers still use. On a CV, use the title in the advert and make your level and framework clear.

Do I need an MSc to apply for an ANP post?

For a qualified post, most employers want the full MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice or a portfolio route that shows equivalence. Trainee posts accept nurses who will complete the MSc during the role, usually over three years.

Where do I put my prescribing qualification?

In the headline as V300 Independent Prescriber, and again in the registration section with the NMC annotation and the year. If you prescribe in particular areas, such as minor illness or respiratory, say so in your experience bullets.

How long should an Advanced Nurse Practitioner CV be?

Two to three pages of A4. Keep your current advanced role, prescribing status and the MSc on the first page, and summarise earlier Band 5 and Band 6 posts in a line or two each.

How do I show the four pillars without a long list?

Give each role a mix: two or three clinical bullets, then one each for leadership, education and audit or research. The pattern repeats down the CV and the panel can find every pillar quickly.

Can I move from secondary care to a primary care ANP role?

Yes, if you show the overlap: undifferentiated assessment, prescribing and long-term conditions. Lead with those, and name any minor illness or community work. Paste the advert into Resume Master and it reorders the CV around the practice's priorities.
