Web Developer CV Example (UK)

A Web Developer CV in the UK is often read first by an agency recruiter who is matching keywords against a client's brief, and only then by a lead developer who will look at the code. It has to work for both: the stack in the headline and the skills block for the recruiter, and bullets that tie a technical choice to something a business noticed for the developer. Sites that shipped, pages that got faster and a portfolio link that still works get the interview booked.

The Sample CV below is for a Web Developer with five years split between a Cardiff digital agency and an in-house role at an outdoor retailer, working across React, Node.js, PHP and WordPress. Every bullet names the site or feature, the stack used and the result: load time, orders, support tickets, an accessibility standard met.

Tailor it to the kind of employer. An agency wants range and the number of sites delivered; a product team or retailer wants depth in one codebase and care for performance; a public sector contract wants WCAG 2.2 AA and the GOV.UK Design System. The US counterpart of this page is the web developer resume example, written for American employers on Letter paper. The Stack template keeps a skills-first layout readable to the parsers agencies use.

Updated . The person and employers in this Sample CV are fictional. Written for applicants in the UK; the page for applicants in the US is the web developer resume example.

Cardiff, CF10ewan.pritchard@example.com07700 900561

Summary

Web Developer with five years across a digital agency and an in-house e-commerce team, building marketing sites, customer accounts and checkout flows in React, Node.js, PHP and WordPress. Rebuilt a 6,000-product catalogue on a headless CMS so category pages load in under two seconds on a mobile connection, and online orders rose in the quarter after launch. Comfortable taking a Figma file to production, writing the accessibility statement and explaining a trade-off to the marketing team.

Experience

Web Developer, Brecon Outdoor Supplies

– Present

Newport

  • Rebuilt the 6,000-product catalogue as a Next.js front end on a headless CMS, bringing median category page load on mobile from 5.1 seconds to 1.8 and lifting online orders in the following quarter.
  • Built the trade account portal in React and Node.js that replaced emailed order forms; 140 trade customers now reorder online and the sales office answers fewer phone orders each week.
  • Brought the site to WCAG 2.2 AA, adding automated checks to the deployment pipeline and clearing the 190 issues raised in the first external audit before the retest.
  • Mentor one apprentice developer through weekly pairing and code review on the order history and returns features.

How a UK CV differs

A UK Web Developer CV is longer than the American one, usually two sides of A4, and it is routed through agencies far more often. The title ladder is Junior, Mid-weight, Senior and Lead; a good share of vacancies are contract roles with a day rate and an IR35 status; and the qualification line may be a degree, a BTEC, a degree apprenticeship or none at all. Public sector work brings its own vocabulary, the GOV.UK Design System and the Public Sector Bodies Accessibility Regulations, that an American page would never mention.

For a web developer in the UK

  1. Two sides, with the stack in the first lines

UK recruiters accept two pages for a developer with five years' work, but they still decide from the headline and the skills block. Put the core stack in the headline and a grouped skills list near the top, then the roles.

  2. Contract and permanent, day rates and IR35

If you have contracted, write Web Developer (contract) with the end client and the engagement length. Say whether the role was inside or outside IR35 and whether you worked through a limited company or an umbrella, since agencies will ask.

  3. Degree, BTEC, apprenticeship or self-taught

State what you have without apology. A Level 4 software developer apprenticeship, a BTEC in computing or a bootcamp are all accepted when the portfolio is live. Put education last if the experience is stronger.

  4. Accessibility is a legal requirement in the public sector

Councils, universities and NHS bodies must meet WCAG 2.2 AA under the Public Sector Bodies Accessibility Regulations. Name the standard and any audit you have taken a site through, and mention the GOV.UK Design System if you have built with it.

  5. Portfolio, GitHub and right to work

Put the portfolio URL and GitHub on the contact line. If you need visa sponsorship, say so once near the end; many smaller agencies cannot sponsor and would rather know before the first call.

Every CV in the UK

A4 paper
Set the page to A4, 210 by 297 millimetres. A Letter-sized PDF prints with odd margins on A4 and reads as imported from the US.
Two pages is normal
Most UK CVs run to two pages. One page suits a first job; three is rare and only for senior roles with a lot to show.
No photo, no date of birth
UK employers do not expect a photo, a date of birth, marital status or nationality on a CV, and most prefer not to see them.
Dates as DD/MM/YYYY
Day first where a full date appears, and month and year for each role: "Mar 2022 – Present". Never the US month-first order.
British English
Organise, programme, centre, licence, specialise. A CV in American spelling reads as written for somewhere else.
Town and postcode area, not a street address
A line such as "Manchester, M4" is enough. A full postal address, and the US-style "City, ST 12345" line, are not expected.

How the CV changes with experience

The same web developer CV, written at three levels: a profile and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first post in the title

Junior Web Developer from a Level 4 software developer apprenticeship, with a year building small-business sites in WordPress and React alongside the course. Ships responsive, accessible pages and picks up a new framework quickly.

  • Built and launched six small-business sites during the apprenticeship, including an online booking form for a physiotherapy clinic.
  • Converted a static brochure site into a WordPress theme the owner now updates without help.
  • Contributed keyboard navigation fixes to an open-source date picker that were merged upstream.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Web Developer with four years across agency and in-house teams, building fast, accessible sites and web apps from design handover to deployment.

  • Rebuilt the company site on a headless CMS and cut mobile load time by more than half.
  • Built an internal quoting tool in React that replaced a shared spreadsheet for the sales team.
  • Own the deployment pipeline, including preview builds and automated accessibility checks.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programmes

Senior Web Developer with ten years leading web platforms for retail and content sites, setting standards for performance, accessibility and code review across a team of five.

  • Lead a team of five developers responsible for the storefront, the CMS and the design system.
  • Set performance budgets for every release and held them through a full redesign and a Black Friday peak.
  • Chose and led the migration to a new hosting and CMS stack, cutting hosting costs by a third.

Skills to put on the web developer CV

Hard skills

JavaScript and TypeScript
Nearly every UK web vacancy lists them, and TypeScript tells a lead developer you can work in a larger codebase without breaking it.
A front-end framework such as React, Vue or Angular
Agencies and parsers match the framework word for word, so write the one in the advert exactly as it appears.
A back-end language such as Node.js, PHP or Python
Web Developer posts in the UK usually expect you to build the API behind the page as well as the page.
WordPress or a headless CMS
Agency and marketing roles run on content systems, and a developer who has customised one is productive in the first week.
Web performance
Load time affects conversion and search ranking, and a measured improvement is one of the strongest lines a CV can carry.
Accessibility to WCAG 2.2
Public sector sites must meet it by law and most larger employers now test for it, yet few candidates show real audit experience.
Git and a deployment pipeline
Teams want developers who can ship safely on their own rather than hand code to someone else to release.

Soft skills

Explaining trade-offs to non-developers
Web developers work with marketing and sales, and a plain explanation of why a feature will take longer gets your recommendation accepted.
Estimating and hitting launch dates
Launches are tied to campaigns and events, so a record of shipping on the day matters as much as the code.
Ownership
Hiring managers want someone who follows a feature to production and fixes it when it breaks at nine on a Friday.

Mistakes that cost web developer interviews

  1. Forty technologies in the skills block

A list of every library you have installed reads as a keyword dump and tells a lead developer nothing. Keep what you could be interviewed on, group it as front end, back end and tooling, and put the advert's stack first.

  2. No live work to look at

A Web Developer without a portfolio link or two live sites asks the reader to take their word for it. Add the URLs and check every one of them before each application; a dead link is worse than none.

  3. Features without outcomes

Built a contact form says what you did and not why it mattered. Add the result: more enquiries, fewer support emails, a faster page, a launch that hit the campaign date.

  4. The stack buried on page two

Agency recruiters scan for one or two words, such as React or Laravel. If they are not in the headline or the summary they may never be seen.

  5. One CV for agencies and product teams

Twenty client sites impress an agency; one well-kept codebase impresses a retailer or a SaaS company. Reorder the bullets for the kind of employer in the advert before you send it.

Questions about the web developer CV

Should a Web Developer CV include a portfolio link?

Yes. Put the portfolio or two or three live sites on the contact line next to your email and GitHub. A lead developer who can see the work in one click is far more likely to ask for an interview.

How do I show full stack work on a Web Developer CV?

Split each project into what you built on each side: the interface, the API, the database and the deployment. Then name the stack in the headline, such as React and Node.js, so a recruiter sees both halves at once.

What if my sites were for clients I cannot name?

Describe them by type and scale: a housing association with 4,000 tenants, a dental group with six practices, a retailer with 6,000 products. The size and the outcome matter more than the client's name, and most agency contracts require it anyway.

Do I need a degree to get a Web Developer job in the UK?

No. Many roles ask for a degree or equivalent experience, and an apprenticeship, a BTEC or a self-taught portfolio with live sites counts. Put education after your experience if the experience is stronger.

How long should a Web Developer CV be?

Two sides of A4 at most, and one side is enough for a junior. Link to the portfolio and the code for everything else rather than adding a page of side projects.

How do I tailor a Web Developer CV to each advert without rewriting it?

Keep one master CV and reorder it per vacancy: the matching project first, the advert's framework spelt exactly as written, the summary rewritten for that employer. Resume Master does this against a pasted advert in about two minutes, and the keyword checker shows which stack words are still missing.

Every application goes out fitting the vacancy.
