Web Developer Resume Example

A web developer's resume competes with a portfolio link and a GitHub profile, and the resume still decides whether anyone clicks them. Hiring managers look first for the stack (languages, frameworks, the CMS or platform), then for sites that shipped and what changed for the business after launch: faster pages, more sign-ups, fewer support tickets.

The Sample resume below is for a web developer with five years at an agency and in-house, working across the front end and the back end of marketing sites and web apps. Every bullet ties a technical choice to an outcome a non-engineer can follow, because the first reader is often a recruiter, not a developer.

Tailor the top third for each posting. An agency role wants range and speed across many client sites; a product company wants depth in one codebase and care for performance and accessibility. Put the matching project first and name the posting's framework exactly as it is written. If you are moving toward interface work, the front-end developer example shows how to lead with it, and the Stack template keeps a skills-first layout readable to tracking systems.

How the resume changes with experience

The same web developer resume, written at three levels: a summary and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first role in the title

Web developer from a coding bootcamp with a year of freelance work building small-business sites in WordPress and React. Ships clean, responsive pages and learns a new stack quickly.

  • Built and launched five small-business websites, including an online booking form for a hair salon.
  • Turned a static brochure site into a WordPress theme the owner now updates without help.
  • Contributed accessibility fixes to an open-source date-picker component that were merged upstream.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Web developer with four years across agency and in-house teams, building fast, accessible sites and web apps from design to deployment.

  • Rebuilt the company site on a headless CMS and cut mobile load time by more than half.
  • Built an internal quoting tool in React that replaced a shared spreadsheet for the sales team.
  • Own the deploy pipeline, including preview builds and automated accessibility checks.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programs

Senior web developer with ten years of experience leading web platforms for commerce and content sites, setting standards for performance, accessibility and code review.

  • Lead a team of five developers responsible for the storefront, the CMS and the design system.
  • Set performance budgets for every release and held them through a full site redesign.
  • Chose and migrated the team to a new hosting and CMS stack, cutting hosting costs by a third.

Skills to put on the web developer resume

Hard skills

JavaScript and TypeScript
Nearly every web posting lists them, and TypeScript signals you can work in a larger codebase without breaking it.
A front-end framework such as React, Vue or Angular
Name the one in the posting exactly; tracking systems and recruiters match the framework word for word.
A back-end language such as Node.js, PHP or Python
Web developer roles often expect you to build the API behind the page, not only the page.
A CMS such as WordPress or a headless CMS
Marketing and agency roles run on content systems, and experience with one shortens your ramp-up.
Web performance
Load time affects conversions and search rankings, so a measured speed improvement is one of the strongest lines you can write.
Accessibility (WCAG)
Accessible sites are a legal and commercial requirement for many employers, and few candidates show real experience with it.
Git and deployment pipelines
Teams want developers who can ship safely on their own, not hand code over to someone else to release.

Soft skills

Translating for non-developers
Web developers work with marketing and sales, and explaining a trade-off plainly gets your recommendation adopted.
Estimating and meeting deadlines
Launch dates are tied to campaigns and events, so a record of shipping on time matters as much as the code.
Ownership
Hiring managers want someone who follows a feature to production and fixes it when it breaks.

Mistakes that cost web developer interviews

  1. Listing every technology you have touched

A skills section with forty tools reads as a keyword dump. Keep the ones you could be interviewed on, grouped by front end, back end and tooling, and put the posting's stack first.

  2. No link to live work

A web developer without a portfolio link or live sites forces the reader to take your word for it. Add two or three URLs you are proud of, and check they still work before every application.

  3. Describing features instead of outcomes

Built a contact form says what you did, not why it mattered. Add the result: more quote requests, fewer support emails, a faster page, a launch that hit its date.

  4. Burying the stack

Recruiters often scan for one word, such as React or PHP. Put the core stack in the headline or summary so it is seen in the first few seconds, not only at the bottom.

  5. Ignoring the difference between agency and product roles

Twenty client sites impress an agency; one well-kept codebase impresses a product team. Reorder your bullets for the kind of employer in the posting.

Questions about the web developer resume

Should a web developer resume include a portfolio?

Yes. Put the portfolio or two or three live sites in the header next to your contact details. A reader who can see the work in one click is far more likely to ask for an interview.

How do I show full stack experience on a web developer resume?

Split each project into what you built on each side: the interface, the API, the database. Then name the stack in your headline, such as React and Node.js, so a recruiter sees both halves at once.

What if my projects were for clients I cannot name?

Describe them by type and size instead: a regional restaurant group, a clinic with three locations, a store with four thousand products. The scale and the outcome matter more than the client's name.

Do web developers need a degree?

Many roles do not require one. A bootcamp, self-taught projects or freelance work count when you show live sites, clean code and results. Put education last if your experience is stronger.

How long should a web developer resume be?

One page for up to about seven years of experience. Link to the portfolio and code for everything else rather than adding a second page of projects.

Every application goes out fitting the job.
