Community College Student Resume Example

A community college student resume usually belongs to someone with more work history than the average four-year student and less time to show it off. The degree in progress goes on top with its expected date, the transfer plan or certificate goes with it, and the job you already hold is written as experience that counts, because it does.

The Sample below is a working adult in Hartford, a shift supervisor at a hardware distributor, finishing an associate degree in business administration at night and planning to transfer to a four-year program. His resume is aimed at an operations coordinator job that uses both the degree and the eight years of warehouse and retail work behind it.

The same structure holds for a nursing, HVAC or welding certificate student: the program and its exams lead, and the current job proves reliability. Students coming straight from high school with no work history should read the high school student example first, and anyone applying for a stipend or tuition award should look at the scholarship example. The Functional template suits a student whose skills matter more than the order of jobs.

How the resume changes with experience

The same community college student resume, written at three levels: a summary and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first role in the title

First-semester community college student who finished high school in June and is taking a full course load while applying for a first part-time job on or near campus.

  • Enrolled in 15 credits toward an associate degree in business, with a tutoring appointment booked weekly.
  • Volunteered 80 hours at a food pantry during senior year, sorting and logging donations.
  • Picked a general business associate over a certificate to keep the transfer option open.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Working adult finishing an associate degree in business at night while supervising a warehouse shift, with a signed transfer agreement and a 3.6 GPA.

  • Runs an 11-person evening shift and the cycle count program while carrying nine credits a semester.
  • Inventory accuracy up seven points and mispicks down by two thirds under his supervision.
  • Chose the evening program over quitting to study full time so the degree would arrive with eight years of work attached.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programs

Associate degree graduate in a first operations coordinator role at a regional distributor, taking two bachelor's courses a semester under a transfer agreement.

  • Coordinates inbound scheduling and carrier appointments for a four-dock facility and reports weekly fill rates.
  • Completed the associate degree with honors while working full time, then moved into a salaried role within three months.
  • Negotiated tuition assistance into the offer rather than a higher base salary, covering most of the bachelor's.

Skills to put on the community college student resume

Hard skills

Degree or certificate in progress with a date
Employers hire community college students for where they are headed, and the expected month makes the plan real.
Industry certifications
OSHA cards, forklift, CNA, EMT, phlebotomy or an EPA 608 card are often the exact requirement in the posting.
Current job results
Working students have real numbers from real shifts, which is more than most four-year students can show.
Software from the job and the classroom
A warehouse system plus Excel forecasting, or an EHR plus medical terminology, pairs practice with theory.
Transfer agreement or next credential
Naming the bachelor's program or the licensing exam shows the degree is a step in a sequence, not an endpoint.
Relevant coursework
Operations Management or Anatomy and Physiology on the page tells an employer what you can discuss in the interview.

Soft skills

Working while studying
A full-time job plus nine credits a semester is the clearest evidence of time management an employer will see.
Coaching coworkers
Training new hires is supervision in all but title, and it makes the jump to coordinator or lead believable.
Persistence
Finishing a degree in your late twenties while working says you complete what you start, without a line claiming it.
Practical judgment
Choosing the evening program or a transfer path over a faster option shows you weigh tradeoffs the way managers do.

Mistakes that cost community college student interviews

  1. Apologizing for the two-year school

An associate degree in progress with a GPA and a transfer plan is a credential. List it the way a university student lists a bachelor's, with the full degree name, the expected month and relevant courses, and never add a line about why you chose it.

  2. Writing the current job as a placeholder

Working students often give the real job two lines and spend the page on classes. Reverse that: the shift you run has numbers, headcount and results, and it is what a hiring manager will ask about first.

  3. Leaving out certifications that are the job requirement

Postings for warehouse, clinical and trade roles often list a card or license as a hard requirement. Give certifications their own block with the issuing body and the year, including ones your employer's program issued.

  4. Omitting the transfer or exam plan

A reader who sees an associate degree alone may assume it is the end. One line naming the bachelor's program and term, or the NCLEX-PN or licensing exam date, changes how the whole page reads.

  5. Listing high school activities past the first year

Once you have a semester of college and any work history, high school clubs come off. The diploma stays as a single line until the associate degree is finished.

Questions about the community college student resume

How do I list an associate degree that is not finished?

Write the full degree name, the school and the expected graduation month, with in progress implied by the future date. Add your GPA if it is 3.5 or above, and the courses that match the posting on one line.

Should I mention that I plan to transfer to a four-year school?

Yes, in the education detail, with the program and the term. Employers hiring for coordinator or technician roles often support tuition assistance and want to know you will use it.

Does a part-time or full-time job from before college count as experience?

It is the most important thing on the page. List it with dates, headcount and results, and point out where coursework changed how you did the job, as the Sample does with the forecasting exercise.

What if I am in a certificate program instead of a degree?

List the certificate program under education the same way, with the expected completion date and the exam or license it leads to, such as the NCLEX-PN, a state CNA registry, EPA 608 or an AWS welding certification.

I am 35 and going back to school. Do I show my age on the resume?

No. Leave birth dates and high school graduation years off, list the last ten to fifteen years of work and the current program, and let the experience speak. The combination of a long work record and a current degree is a strength.

How long should a community college student resume be?

One page. Working students with long job histories should cut jobs older than about ten years to a single line or drop them, so the current role, the certifications and the degree have room.

Every application goes out fitting the job.
