Recent Graduate Resume Example

A recent graduate resume covers the first twelve months after commencement, when the degree is finished but the first full-time job in the field is not. Education stays on top, the internship and campus work carry the experience section, and whatever you are doing to pay rent right now goes on the page too, honestly and briefly.

The Sample below is an economics graduate in Providence who finished in May 2026, interned in insurance analytics the summer before, and has been working part time at a bookshop while applying for analyst roles. Five months out is normal; the resume treats the bookshop job as current work with a result, not as something to hide.

Once you cross roughly a year since graduation, employers stop reading you as a new graduate and start asking what you did with the year, so this page is also about using the gap: a certificate in progress, a volunteer analysis project, a temp role in the field. For the version of this page written while still enrolled, see the college student example, and for a first job with no related experience at all, the no experience example. The Launch template was built for exactly this stage.

How the resume changes with experience

The same recent graduate resume, written at three levels: a summary and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first role in the title

Graduating senior two months before commencement, with one summer internship and a thesis in progress, applying for analyst programs that start in the summer.

  • Internship dashboard still in monthly use by the underwriting team.
  • Thesis on rent stabilization due in April; data assembled and first regressions run.
  • Applying to structured analyst programs only, since rotational training matters more than a first salary.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Economics graduate five months past commencement, working part time while finishing a data analytics certificate and interviewing for analyst roles in insurance, banking and policy.

  • Research assistant for two years on a panel of 3,100 county-years, plus a summer of SQL work on 12,000 policies.
  • Built a reorder spreadsheet for the current employer that cut overstock titles every month.
  • Kept a 24-hour retail week on the resume rather than leaving a blank, and used the rest of the week on the certificate.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programs

Economics graduate nine months into a first full-time role as a junior data analyst at a regional insurer, after a six-month search that included a short contract role.

  • Owns the monthly loss-ratio reporting for two product lines and the data dictionary behind it.
  • Three-month contract role as a reporting analyst at a hospital system filled the gap and produced two reference letters.
  • Accepted a contract role over continued waiting because current field work on the resume beat an extra month of searching.

Skills to put on the recent graduate resume

Hard skills

Spreadsheet and SQL skills
Entry analyst postings test both in the first interview, and naming the specific functions you use is more convincing than listing the tool.
Internship with a lasting deliverable
A dashboard or report still in use after you left is the closest thing to a reference a new graduate can put in writing.
Statistics or programming from coursework
Regression, R or Python and a thesis dataset show you can handle the work before someone trains you.
A certificate in progress
It answers the question of what you have done since May and shows the search is active, not stalled.
Writing and presentation
A thesis prize or a memo to a chief underwriter tells a manager you can be put in front of a decision maker.
Industry context
A risk and insurance course or an internship in the sector lets a recruiter picture you in the seat.

Soft skills

Honesty about the search
A visible part-time job and a certificate read as resilience; an unexplained blank reads as a question.
Documentation habit
Leaving a reproducible codebase is rare in interns and new hires, and managers mention it in references.
Initiative in any job
Improving reorders at a bookshop shows you look for the analysis even where no one asked for it.
Readiness to start
Stating immediate availability removes a scheduling question before the recruiter asks it.

Mistakes that cost recent graduate interviews

  1. Leaving the months since graduation blank

A recruiter who sees a May graduation and nothing after it assumes nothing happened. Put the part-time job, the certificate, the volunteer analysis or the contract role on the page, each with a date and one result.

  2. Dropping education to the bottom too soon

Until you have a full-time role in the field, the degree is your most relevant credential and it leads. Move it below experience only after the first year of professional work.

  3. Listing every campus job equally

The two-year research assistantship earns three bullets; the dining hall shift earns one line or nothing. Weight the page toward whatever is closest to the job you want.

  4. An objective statement instead of a summary

Seeking an analyst position where I can grow tells the reader nothing. Say what you studied, what you have done with data and when you can start, in three sentences.

  5. Padding skills with software you opened once

Every tool you list is fair game in the interview. Keep the ones you could use on day one and name the specific functions or packages to make the claim concrete.

Questions about the recent graduate resume

How long am I a recent graduate on my resume?

About a year. Until then, education stays on top and employers read you as entry level. After the first full year, the page should be led by work, even if that work was a contract or part-time role in the field.

Should I include a retail or restaurant job I took after graduating?

Yes, with its real hours and one bullet on something you improved. It fills the timeline, shows you are working, and gives the interviewer a question about judgment that you can answer well.

How do I explain a gap between graduation and my first job?

On the resume, fill it with dated entries: a certificate in progress, a volunteer project, a contract role. Save the explanation for the cover letter or interview, where one sentence about a deliberate search does the job.

Do I keep my GPA on a recent graduate resume?

Keep it for the first year if it is 3.5 or higher, along with honors such as dean's list or a thesis prize. Below that, list the honors alone and let the internship speak.

Can I put coursework on the resume after graduating?

A single line of four or five courses that match the posting, under the degree. It is most useful when the degree name does not obviously fit the job, as with an economics major applying for a data role.

Should my thesis or capstone be on the resume?

If it used skills the job needs, yes, as one line under education with the topic and any award, or as a project entry with the dataset size and the method if it is your strongest technical work.

Every application goes out fitting the job.
