DevOps Engineer Resume Example

A DevOps engineer resume is judged on the systems you ran and what changed while you ran them. Hiring managers look for the cloud, the pipeline tooling and the uptime numbers before they read a single sentence about culture.

The Sample resume below is for a DevOps engineer with six years across a payments company and a software vendor, moving from on-call support into owning the deployment platform. Every bullet ties a tool to an outcome: deploy frequency, recovery time, cloud spend or incidents avoided. That is the pattern to copy, because a tool list on its own says nothing about whether you can be trusted with production.

Adjust the emphasis for the posting in front of you. A site reliability role wants SLOs, incident response and postmortems; a platform role wants developer experience and self-service tooling; a smaller company wants one person who can carry the whole stack from Terraform to alerting. Name the exact cloud and the exact orchestration layer in the posting, since screening software matches on them. The system administrator example covers the infrastructure side you may be coming from, the it-and-software hub lists the neighboring titles, and the Stack template gives a long tools section room to breathe.

Evan Castellanos

DevOps Engineer, AWS and Kubernetes

Portland, ORevan.castellanos@example.com(503) 555-0137

Summary

DevOps engineer with six years of experience building and running deployment pipelines and cloud infrastructure for transaction-heavy web services. Took a payments platform from weekly releases with manual approvals to more than twenty production deploys a day with automated rollback. Comfortable owning on-call, writing infrastructure as code and coaching developers on how their services behave in production.

Experience

DevOps Engineer, Brightwater Payments

– Present

Portland, OR

  • Own the CI/CD platform for 40 microservices on Amazon EKS, using GitHub Actions and Argo CD; deploy frequency rose from about five a week to more than twenty a day.
  • Migrated the remaining hand-built infrastructure into Terraform modules with pull-request review, eliminating configuration drift across three environments.
  • Wrote SLOs and Prometheus alert rules with each service team, cutting pages outside business hours by roughly half over one year.
  • Led the cloud cost review that right-sized node groups and moved batch jobs to spot instances, saving about $18,000 a month.
Site Reliability Engineer, Northpine Software

–

Beaverton, OR

  • Ran production for a B2B scheduling product on AWS ECS, holding availability above the contracted 99.9 percent for eleven consecutive quarters.
  • Built the incident process from scratch, including on-call rotations, runbooks and blameless postmortems, and mean time to recovery fell from over two hours to under thirty minutes.
  • Containerized the legacy monolith and its cron jobs, letting the company retire its last two data center servers.

Bachelor of Science in Computer Science

Tualatin Ridge University, Tigard, OR

How the resume changes with experience

The same devops engineer resume, written at three levels: a summary and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first role in the title

Junior DevOps engineer with a computer science degree, a year of help desk and Linux support work, and a home lab running Kubernetes. AWS Cloud Practitioner certified and eager to take a first on-call shift.

  • Maintained Linux build agents and Jenkins jobs for a twelve-person development team.
  • Automated the nightly database refresh with a Bash script that saved the team about four hours a week.
  • Chose to document every manual fix as a runbook entry so the next person on shift would not repeat it.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

DevOps engineer with five years of experience running Kubernetes clusters and Terraform-managed cloud accounts for SaaS products.

  • Operate three EKS clusters and about 60 services across development, staging and production.
  • Cut the average pipeline run from 34 minutes to 11 by caching dependencies and splitting test stages.
  • Argued for a freeze on Friday releases after two weekend incidents, then lifted it once automated rollback was in place.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programs

Staff-level platform engineer with ten years of experience leading infrastructure teams, setting reliability targets and owning the cloud budget for a company of 400 engineers.

  • Lead a platform team of eight engineers responsible for CI/CD, observability and internal developer tooling.
  • Brought annual cloud spend down by a third while traffic doubled, through reserved capacity and a multi-tenant cluster design.
  • Decided to keep the company on a single cloud provider rather than pursue multi-cloud, and wrote the reasoning for the executive team.

Skills to put on the devops engineer resume

Hard skills

A major cloud provider
Postings name AWS, Azure or Google Cloud specifically, and a matching certification plus real production work gets you past the first screen.
Kubernetes or another orchestration layer
Most DevOps interviews include a question about how you ran containers at scale, and naming the cluster size shows you have done it.
Infrastructure as code
Terraform, Pulumi or CloudFormation experience tells a manager you can change production safely and reviewably.
CI/CD pipelines
The pipeline is the product of a DevOps role, so state the tooling and how deploy frequency or lead time changed under you.
Observability and alerting
Teams hire people who can see what production is doing, and experience with metrics, logs and tracing is asked about in every technical round.
Scripting in Python, Go or Bash
Glue code holds automation together, and interviewers often ask you to write or read a short script.
Incident management
On-call is part of the job, and postmortems you led are strong evidence that you keep your head during an outage.

Soft skills

Clear writing
Runbooks, postmortems and design documents are how DevOps work spreads to other teams, and managers notice engineers who write well.
Working across teams
You change how developers ship, so persuading people who do not report to you is a daily task worth showing on the page.
Calm under an outage
The incident channel at two in the morning is where reputations are made, and hiring managers ask about it directly.
Cost awareness
Cloud bills land on your desk, and an engineer who can explain spend in business terms is easy to promote.

Mistakes that cost devops engineer interviews

  1. A wall of tool names with no outcomes

Listing Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform and Ansible in a row proves nothing. Attach each major tool to a sentence about what it changed: deploys per day, recovery time, servers retired or dollars saved.

  2. No sense of scale

Managing infrastructure could mean two virtual machines or two hundred clusters. State the number of services, clusters, regions or requests per second so the reader can place you.

  3. Hiding the on-call work

Some candidates leave incidents off the page because they sound like failures. Postmortems, runbooks and improved recovery times are exactly what reliability-focused teams want to see.

  4. Skipping the cloud named in the posting

If a role asks for Azure and you have spent five years in AWS, say so plainly and point to transferable work such as Kubernetes or Terraform. Silence on the topic reads as a gap.

  5. Calling yourself DevOps with no development work

Hiring managers expect at least scripting, and increasingly Go or Python services. Show the code you have written, even if it is internal tooling.

Questions about the devops engineer resume

Should a DevOps engineer resume list certifications?

Yes, near the top if they match the posting. An AWS, Azure or Kubernetes certification helps you clear automated screens and reassures managers who cannot judge your code themselves. Real production experience still carries more weight in the interview.

How do I show results when uptime is the whole job?

Use the metrics your team tracked: availability held, mean time to recovery, deploy frequency, pipeline duration, alert volume and cloud spend. If a number improved during your tenure, say by how much.

Is DevOps engineer different from site reliability engineer on a resume?

The titles overlap heavily, and many companies use them interchangeably. Mirror the title in the posting, then lean toward SLOs and incident work for SRE roles and toward pipelines and developer tooling for DevOps roles.

Should I include a GitHub link?

Include it if the repositories show infrastructure code, Helm charts or tooling you would be happy to discuss. An empty or abandoned profile is worse than none, so leave it off in that case.

How long should a DevOps resume be?

One page up to about six years of experience, two pages once you have led teams or run large platforms. Keep the skills section compact; the bullets should carry the detail.

Every application goes out fitting the job.
