Software Engineer Resume Example

Software engineering resumes are skimmed quickly and then questioned closely. The first pass looks for the languages, the systems you have worked on and the scale they run at. The second pass, usually in the technical screen, tests whether the bullets are really yours. Write every line so you would enjoy being asked about it.

The Sample resume below belongs to a backend-leaning software engineer with six years at a payments company and a logistics startup. Each bullet has a system, an action and a measured result: requests per second, latency, incidents, cost, or time saved for other engineers. That structure works whether you write Go, Java, Python or C#.

Adjust the order for each posting. Infrastructure-heavy roles want reliability and scale first; product teams want features that users noticed. Mirror the posting's language names and cloud platform exactly. The Java developer example shows a narrower, language-first version of this page, and the ATS-Optimized template is a safe single-column choice for large employers' portals.

Daniel Nakamura

Software Engineer, Backend and Distributed Systems

Seattle, WAdaniel.nakamura@example.com(206) 555-0174

Summary

Software engineer with six years of experience building backend services in Go and Python for payments and logistics products. Designed the ledger service that now records every card transaction on the platform, with no reconciliation errors since launch. Cares about on-call health, clear design documents and code that the next engineer can change safely.

Experience

Software Engineer II, Northsound Payments

– Present

Seattle, WA

  • Designed and built a double-entry ledger service in Go handling 3,500 writes per second at peak, replacing a batch job that ran four hours behind.
  • Cut p99 latency on the authorization path from 420 ms to 180 ms by removing two synchronous calls and adding a read-through cache.
  • Led the incident review program for the team; pages per on-call week fell from eleven to three over a year.
  • Wrote the design document and migration plan for moving three services to Kubernetes, completed with no customer-facing downtime.
Software Engineer, Freightwise Logistics

–

Portland, OR

  • Built the shipment tracking API in Python and PostgreSQL used by 1,200 carrier accounts and the customer web app.
  • Replaced a nightly CSV import with an event-driven pipeline, so shipment updates reach customers in seconds instead of the next morning.
  • Added contract tests between four services, which caught breaking API changes before release.

How the resume changes with experience

The same software engineer resume, written at three levels: a summary and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first role in the title

Computer science graduate with two software engineering internships and a capstone project in distributed systems. Writes tested, readable code and asks good questions in code review.

  • Built a feature flag service during an internship that the team kept in production after I left.
  • Wrote integration tests for a billing API that raised coverage on its critical paths to full.
  • Built a distributed key-value store for a capstone project with leader election and snapshotting.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Software engineer with four years of experience owning backend services from design to on-call, in Python and Go on AWS.

  • Own the notifications service, sending two million messages a day.
  • Cut cloud spend on the team's services by right-sizing databases and adding autoscaling.
  • Mentor two newer engineers and review most of the team's pull requests.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programs

Senior software engineer with ten years of experience designing high-volume systems, leading cross-team technical projects and raising engineering standards.

  • Led the re-architecture of the order pipeline across three teams, removing the single database that limited growth.
  • Set the service standards (logging, alerts, runbooks) now required for every new service in the company.
  • Interview and calibrate engineering candidates, and mentor four engineers toward promotion.

Skills to put on the software engineer resume

Hard skills

One or two core languages in depth
Hiring managers trust depth over a long list, so name the languages you would pick for a live coding interview.
System design
Mid-level and senior interviews include a design round, and bullets about designing services prepare the ground for it.
Databases (SQL and NoSQL)
Almost every backend role involves data modeling and query performance, which interviewers probe with real examples.
Cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP or Azure
Postings often name one, and matching it exactly helps both the tracking system and the recruiter.
Testing and CI/CD
Engineers who ship safely and often reduce incidents, which is a result every team values.
Observability and on-call
Owning production health shows maturity, and fewer pages or faster recovery are measurable outcomes.
Messaging and streaming (Kafka, queues)
Event-driven systems are common in modern backends and set you apart for platform and data-heavy roles.

Soft skills

Written design communication
Design documents are how engineers get alignment across teams, and good ones are a sign of seniority.
Code review and mentoring
Lifting the people around you is a core expectation from mid level upward.
Working with product partners
Engineers who understand the customer problem build the right thing the first time.

Mistakes that cost software engineer interviews

  1. Bullets that only list technologies

Used Kafka, Redis and Kubernetes describes a stack, not your work. Say what you built with them, why, and what changed: throughput, latency, reliability or cost.

  2. Claiming the whole team's project

Interviewers ask what you personally did. Use we sparingly and be precise: designed the schema, wrote the migration, led the rollout. Precision reads as confidence.

  3. A generic summary

Passionate software engineer who loves solving problems says nothing. State your focus (backend, platform, product), your main languages and one result that proves it.

  4. Leaving out scale

The same feature is a different job at a hundred users or ten million. Give requests per second, data volume, users or accounts wherever you can.

  5. Two pages of old projects

Keep older roles short so your recent, most relevant work sits on the first half of the page. A recruiter decides long before the second page.

Questions about the software engineer resume

Should software engineers put a GitHub link on their resume?

Yes, if it shows work you are proud of. A thin or empty profile does not hurt much, but a few maintained projects or open-source contributions help, especially earlier in your career.

How many programming languages should I list?

List the ones you could be interviewed in, usually three to six. Put your strongest first and make sure your bullets show you using them.

What is the best resume format for a software engineer?

A single-column, reverse-chronological layout with a short skills section near the top. It reads well in tracking systems and lets an engineer find your recent work in seconds.

Do I need a computer science degree to be a software engineer?

Many employers do not require one. Show equivalent evidence instead: shipped projects, production experience, open-source work and the system design depth your target role expects.

How do I tailor a software engineer resume to a job posting?

Mirror the posting's languages and platforms where they are true of you, move the most similar project to the top, and rewrite the summary for that team's problem. Do it for each application.

Every application goes out fitting the job.
