A DevOps or platform resume is screened on two keys before anyone reads a bullet: which cloud, and whether a vendor has certified you on it. That is why this template places Certifications directly under the summary, then a tools block grouped by layer (cloud and orchestration, infrastructure and pipelines, observability and scripting). By the time the reader reaches your experience they already know whether you run AWS, Azure or Google Cloud.

The experience slots borrow the measures your team already tracks: how often you deploy, how long a pipeline takes, how fast you recover from an incident, how many changes fail, and what the cloud bill did. If your organization uses DORA metrics or SLOs, the numbers are sitting on a dashboard you can copy from. Fill each bracket with your own figures and delete slots that do not fit your environment.

No certifications yet? Remove the block and move Skills up a place. The DevOps engineer resume example shows this structure completed.

How to fill in each section

  1. Summary: platform, scale, one operational win

Lead with the cloud and the orchestration layer you run in production, then the kind of workload, because a team running payment APIs and a team running batch analytics want different things. The middle sentence should carry one operational change with a before and after. The last line names whether you want reliability work, internal platform work, or a role where you own the whole stack alone. Titles vary, so mirror the posting's: DevOps, SRE, platform or cloud engineer.

  2. Certifications: current, exact, dated

Write the full certification name with its level, the issuer and the year. Cloud certifications expire, so if one has lapsed, either renew it or move it out of this block. An associate-level cloud certification plus a Kubernetes one covers most generalist postings; a specialty certification in security or networking helps only when the role asks for it. A booked exam with a date is worth listing early in your career. Course completion badges do not belong here.

  3. Skills: grouped by layer of the stack

Group tools so a reader sees the shape of your platform in three lines: where it runs, how it is built and shipped, and how you watch it. Put the cloud from the posting first if you have run it. Keep scripting languages on the observability line, since glue code is part of the job and technical rounds often include a short script. Leave off tools you met once in a tutorial; the interviewer will find them.

  4. Experience: deploys, recovery, cost, scale

Each bullet slot asks for a number your team already measures. The first one sets scale (services, clusters, regions, traffic) so the reader can place every claim after it. Then deploy frequency or lead time, then recovery time or incident volume, then spend. Incidents are not failures to hide: a postmortem you led and the fix that stuck show judgment under pressure. Name the tool inside the bullet where it caused the result, rather than repeating the skills list.

  5. Education: short, and last

One line with the degree, school and year. Many DevOps engineers come from system administration, support or software development without a computer science degree, and the certifications block above does more for them than education does. If you have no degree, list a relevant training program here or remove the section; nobody screening a platform role expects a long list of coursework.

Questions about the devops engineer resume template

Should certifications really go above skills?

For most DevOps roles, yes: cloud certifications are a frequent screening filter and they are short to read. If you have none, or only an entry-level one while you have years of production work, move Skills up and put a single certification line near the bottom.

How do I write DevOps bullets if I came from system administration?

Show the shift from doing tasks by hand to automating them: servers built by script, patching done by configuration management, a first pipeline you set up. The system administrator resume example covers the role many DevOps engineers start from.

What if my company does not track DORA metrics?

Use the closest numbers you can verify: how long a release took, how many incidents in a quarter, how long a pipeline ran, how much the monthly cloud invoice changed. Estimates are fine when you mark them as approximate and could explain how you arrived at them.

Should I list a home lab?

List it in place of the second job if you have no production infrastructure experience yet. Describe what it runs, such as a small Kubernetes cluster managed with Terraform and monitored with Prometheus, and link the repository. Remove it once paid work shows the same tools.

Is it free?

Yes. The Word files and the Google Docs copy are free to download, edit and use for any application. There is no signup and no email.

Will it read correctly in an applicant tracking system?

The layout is one column with standard headings and real text: no tables, text boxes, icons, columns or images, which are the parts parsers most often misread. Keep it that way as you edit.

Word or Google Docs?

Use whichever you edit in. The Word file opens in Microsoft Word, Pages and LibreOffice. The Google Docs link asks you to make a copy in your own Drive; the original stays blank for the next person. Send the posting the format it asks for, usually .docx or PDF.

Every application goes out fitting the job.
