Engineering Student Resume Example

An engineering student resume is read by engineers, and engineers want specifics: the CAD package, the material, the tolerance, the test result. A co-op or internship with a part you designed, a senior design project written as a role, and the date you plan to sit the FE exam tell a hiring manager more than any GPA.

The Sample resume below belongs to a mechanical engineering senior in Albuquerque who completed two co-op rotations at a precision machining company, leads a senior design team and works in the student machine shop. The co-op bullets name SolidWorks, GD&T, the fixture and the scrap rate it changed. The senior design entry has a sponsor, a budget and a test result.

The page is written for mechanical engineering, but the structure holds for civil, electrical, chemical and industrial students: swap the software, the standards and the lab equipment, keep the shape. For what the first full-time role looks like, read the mechanical engineer example, the civil engineer example, the electrical engineer example and the project engineer example. Rules every student page shares are on the business student example.

How the resume changes with experience

The same engineering student resume, written at three levels: a summary and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first role in the title

Second-year mechanical engineering student with Statics, Dynamics and Introduction to CAD completed, a seat on the competition vehicle suspension subteam and a summer as a hardware store associate, applying for a first engineering internship or co-op.

  • Modeled the rear suspension linkage for a student competition vehicle in SolidWorks and machined two brackets for it in the student shop.
  • Finished Statics and Dynamics with A grades and passed the Certified SolidWorks Associate exam in the first year.
  • Took the hardware store job over a desk job because I wanted to know the fasteners and tools I would be specifying.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Senior mechanical engineering student with two co-op rotations in precision machining, a sponsored senior design project under way and a student machinist job, applying for full-time design and manufacturing engineering roles for June 2026.

  • Designed 14 CNC fixtures and released GD&T drawings through PLM across two co-op rotations.
  • A fixture redesign for a warping thin-wall housing cut scrap from about 9 percent to under 2 percent.
  • Scheduled the FE exam for April of senior year, before the job starts, rather than waiting until the material had faded.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programs

Mechanical engineering graduate with a passed FE exam, two co-op rotations and a senior design project delivered to its sponsor, three months into a first design engineer role and building toward the PE.

  • Senior design rig was delivered to the sponsor and used in its first wear test on two tracker drive models.
  • Passed the FE Mechanical exam in April before graduation and began logging experience toward the PE license.
  • Chose a manufacturing-heavy design role over a pure analysis role because the co-op taught me I design better parts when I can see them made.

Skills to put on the engineering student resume

Hard skills

A CAD package named with a level
SolidWorks, Creo, NX, Inventor or Revit, with a certification or a count of parts released, is the first thing an engineering manager checks for.
GD&T and drawing standards
A student who can release a drawing with proper tolerancing saves a senior engineer weeks of markups.
Hands-on shop or lab skills
Machining, soldering, wiring a test rig or running a CMM shows you know what your design does to the people who build it.
Analysis tools
FEA, MATLAB or Python used on a real part or dataset proves you can check a design rather than hope.
Senior design with a sponsor
A project with a budget, a schedule and an external customer is the closest a student gets to a first project assignment.
FE exam status
Passed or scheduled, the FE tells employers you are on the licensure path, which matters most in civil but is read well in every discipline.
Measurement and testing
Load cells, strain gauges, oscilloscopes or inspection equipment show you can produce the data your analysis needs.
Safety training
An OSHA 10 card or shop safety instructor role lets a plant or lab put you on the floor without a delay.

Soft skills

Working with machinists and technicians
Engineers who listen to the shop design parts that get made; a co-op bullet that credits a shop suggestion shows it.
Running a meeting
The weekly sponsor call in senior design is practice for the design review you will run in your first year.
Documentation
Inspection reports, setup guides and drawing packages are the paper trail an engineering team lives on.
Owning a schedule
A design review passed on time with a four-person team is a judgment an interviewer can ask about.

Mistakes that cost engineering student interviews

  1. Listing SolidWorks without a part

Every engineering student lists CAD. Name what you modeled, how many drawings you released, the standard you tolerance to and any certification. A fixture count beats a proficiency adjective.

  2. Writing senior design as a class

Senior design is a project with a sponsor, a budget, a schedule and a deliverable. Give it a title (Team Lead, Structural Lead), dates, a sponsor description and bullets with the analysis results and the money. It is often the strongest entry a student has.

  3. Skipping the shop or lab job

Student machinist, lab assistant and maker-space monitor roles prove hands-on skill that many graduates lack. Keep them with the equipment named and a volume.

  4. Burying the FE exam

If you have passed or scheduled the FE, put it in the headline and under certifications with the discipline and the date. Civil employers expect it; mechanical and electrical employers read it as seriousness.

  5. A page of coursework and no results

Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics are on every transcript in the stack. Keep a single line of course titles in the education detail and spend the space on fixtures, scrap rates, safety factors and test results.

  6. Co-op bullets without the problem

Designed fixtures is a task. The warping housing, the clamping problem and the scrap rate before and after are the story, and an engineer interviewing you will ask for exactly that.

Questions about the engineering student resume

When should an engineering student take the FE exam?

In the final semester or within a few months of graduation, while the coursework is fresh. Most states allow students to sit before the degree is awarded. Put the scheduled date on the resume under certifications and in the headline, and replace it with FE passed as soon as the result arrives.

Is a co-op or an internship better for an engineering resume?

A co-op gives longer rotations, often paid better and with real ownership, at the cost of a later graduation. An internship fits a four-year plan. Employers value both; what they read is what you designed, tested or fixed. Two rotations at one company, as in the Sample, show depth and a company that wanted you back.

How do I write a senior design project on a resume?

As an experience entry with your role, the sponsor type, the budget and the dates. Bullets cover the design responsibility you owned, the analysis result with numbers, the schedule milestone met and the sourcing or budget outcome. If the project is still running, write the milestones reached so far.

Should an engineering student include GPA?

Include it at 3.5 or above or when a posting asks. Many large engineering employers filter at 3.0, so include it at or above that for those postings. Below 3.0, lead with the co-op and the project, and apply through the career fair where the conversation comes first.

What hands-on skills matter on an engineering student resume?

Whatever your discipline builds with: machining and CAM for mechanical, soldering, PCB layout and oscilloscopes for electrical, surveying equipment and materials testing for civil, lab instrumentation for chemical. Name the equipment and the volume or the project, and include safety training such as OSHA 10 or a shop safety card.

Does an engineering student resume need to be one page?

One page through graduation. Co-op rotations, senior design and a shop or lab job fit if each has three or four bullets and coursework stays on one line. A two-page resume from a student usually means the course list grew.

Every application goes out fitting the job.
