Finance Student Resume Example

A finance student resume is a modeling sample in disguise. Recruiters for analyst internships scan it for Excel work with real numbers, a student investment fund or case competition, and any job where you handled money or clients. Grades matter, but a DCF you actually built matters more.

The Sample resume below is a junior in Phoenix who leads a sector in a student-managed fund, finished a summer internship at a small wealth management firm and works as a part-time teller. The fund bullets name the models and the dollars under management, the internship names the software and the deliverables, and the teller job proves cash accuracy and client contact.

Finance recruiting splits by path. Investment banking and asset management internships are filled a year ahead, often in the spring of sophomore year; corporate finance and wealth management hire closer to the start date. The page below works for both with a different headline. For the full-time roles this leads to, see the financial analyst example and the financial advisor example; for the bank job that funds the degree, the bank teller example. General student resume rules are on the business student page.

How the resume changes with experience

The same finance student resume, written at three levels: a summary and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first role in the title

Sophomore finance major with Corporate Finance and Accounting completed, a paper-trading portfolio tracked for 18 months and a first year as an analyst in the student investment fund, applying for a first summer internship in wealth management or corporate finance.

  • Joined the student fund as a first-year analyst and completed the fund's twelve-week valuation training on evenings and weekends.
  • Finished the Bloomberg Market Concepts certificate in the campus trading room before most of my class had an account.
  • Pitched a consumer stock that the committee declined, then rewrote the thesis with their feedback instead of dropping the name.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Junior finance student leading a sector in a $410,000 student fund, with a wealth management internship, Bloomberg Market Concepts and a stock pitch final behind him, applying for summer 2026 analyst internships in corporate finance and equity research.

  • Run a four-analyst sector team and present two recommendations a semester to a faculty and alumni investment committee.
  • A DCF-backed industrials pitch was approved as a 2 percent position and returned 11 percent in five months.
  • Rebuilt an adviser's rebalancing sheet during a summer internship, which cut a monthly four-hour task to one.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programs

Graduating finance senior with two summer analyst internships, two years in a student-managed fund and CFA Level I scheduled for August, seeking a full-time financial analyst or equity research associate role starting July 2027.

  • Second internship in a regional company's corporate FP&A group covered the monthly forecast for a $140 million business unit and a capital budgeting model for a plant expansion.
  • Served as the fund's portfolio manager in senior year, presenting the annual report to the university's investment committee.
  • Registered for CFA Level I before graduation so the resume shows the date rather than an intention.

Skills to put on the finance student resume

Hard skills

Financial modeling in Excel
A named model (three-statement, DCF, LBO) with its purpose and outcome is the single line finance recruiters look for on a student page.
Valuation methods
Interviews ask you to walk through a DCF and comps; the resume should show you have done both for a real pitch.
Bloomberg Terminal and BMC
The certificate is recognized, free through most campus terminals and signals you have spent time with live market data.
Financial statement analysis
Reading a 10-K well is what analyst internships actually test, and a course grade or a pitch bullet proves it.
Student fund or case competition
It is the closest thing a student has to a track record, with dollars, a committee and a decision.
Fixed income basics
Wealth management and corporate treasury internships ask about bonds, and most finance students cannot answer.
Cash handling or client reporting
A teller or a reporting internship shows accuracy with other people's money, which is the trust an analyst role rests on.

Soft skills

Defending a recommendation
Presenting a pitch to a committee and taking a rejection is exactly what a junior analyst does with a portfolio manager.
Writing short
A two-page memo on 14 bond issues is harder than a ten-page one, and research teams hire for it.
Attention to detail
A balanced drawer on every shift and a model that reconciles are the same habit, and recruiters read both.
Persistence in recruiting
Finance internships take dozens of applications and coffee chats, and the students who land them are the ones who kept going after the first round of rejections.

Mistakes that cost finance student interviews

  1. Listing Excel without saying what you built

Every finance student writes Excel. Name the model, the company and the result: a DCF with sensitivity tables for a rail equipment pitch that the committee approved. That line is a work sample; the word Excel is not.

  2. Writing the fund role like a club membership

Member, Student Investment Fund wastes the best line you have. Give it dollars under management, your coverage, how many pitches you presented and what the committee decided. If a pitch was declined, say so and say what you changed.

  3. Skipping the money-handling job

Students drop the teller or cashier job because it does not sound like finance. Keep it. A balanced drawer for two years and loan referrals show accuracy and client comfort, and wealth management firms hire for both.

  4. Claiming a CFA you have not sat for

Write CFA Level I candidate, with the exam month, only once you are registered. Recruiters check, and a vague CFA in progress reads as padding.

  5. One resume for every finance path

Equity research, corporate finance and wealth management want different first lines. Change the headline and reorder the skills for each, and lead with the fund for research, the FP&A or internship work for corporate finance, and client reporting for wealth management.

Questions about the finance student resume

What should a finance student with no internship put on a resume?

A student investment fund or finance club role, a case or stock pitch competition, a model you built in a course or on your own, the Bloomberg Market Concepts certificate, and any job that handled cash or clients. Write the model and the competition as entries with outcomes. The first internship is usually won on those lines, not on coursework.

When should I start applying for finance internships?

Investment banking and large asset management programs open applications for the following summer in the spring and summer of sophomore year, sometimes earlier. Corporate finance, wealth management and smaller firms recruit in the fall and winter before the summer. Keep the resume current from the start of sophomore year so you can send it the week a posting opens.

Is Bloomberg Market Concepts worth putting on a finance resume?

Yes. It is free through most university trading rooms, takes about ten hours and recruiters recognize the name. List it under certifications with the year. It will not get you an interview alone, but it answers the question of whether you have used the terminal.

Should I include my GPA for a finance internship?

Include it at 3.5 or higher, and include it anyway when a posting states a minimum, since banks and asset managers usually do. If the overall is below 3.5 but finance courses are strong, show the major GPA. Below a stated floor, your path is through alumni and smaller firms that read the fund and the model lines first.

How do I describe a stock pitch competition?

In the education detail or as a short experience entry: the competition name or type, the team size, the company pitched, the method and the placing. Finalist, second of 22 teams, with a DCF and comps on a named company is enough for a recruiter to ask about it in an interview.

Should a finance student's resume be one page?

One page, without exception, for internships and analyst roles. Many banks also ask for a specific format with education at the top and a short interests line at the bottom. Cut course lists before you cut a bullet with a number in it.

Every application goes out fitting the job.
