Financial Analyst Resume Example

Financial analysts are hired to help leaders decide where money goes. A finance manager reading your resume looks for the models you build, the forecasts you own, how accurate they were and which decisions they supported. Excel skill is assumed; what separates candidates is the business judgment behind the numbers.

The Sample resume below is for a financial analyst with five years in corporate planning at a software company and a hospital network. Its bullets pair a financial process (budget, forecast, variance review, business case) with its effect: a pricing change approved, costs cut, a forecast that held within a tight range.

Financial analyst postings split across FP&A, investment and credit work, and each reads a resume differently. FP&A roles want budgeting and forecasting with operating teams; investment roles want valuation and modeling; credit roles want risk analysis. Match the posting's vocabulary and systems, and lead with the model or decision that best fits it. The accountant example shows the closely related role focused on the books rather than the forecast.

How the resume changes with experience

The same financial analyst resume, written at three levels: a summary and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first role in the title

Finance graduate with an FP&A internship and strong Excel modeling skills, working toward the CFA. Careful with detail and quick to learn a business.

  • Built a revenue forecast model for one product line during an internship.
  • Prepared monthly expense reports for three departments and explained variances.
  • Placed in the top three of a university case competition on company valuation.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Financial analyst with four years of experience in budgeting, forecasting and business cases for a manufacturing company.

  • Own the forecast for two plants and present variances monthly.
  • Built the capital request model used for all equipment purchases.
  • Supported a pricing review that improved margin on a key product line.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programs

Finance manager with ten years of experience leading FP&A, building planning processes and advising executives on growth and cost decisions.

  • Lead a team of four analysts responsible for company-wide budgeting and forecasting.
  • Implemented a planning system that shortened the annual budget cycle by a month.
  • Advise the executive team on investments, pricing and long-range plans.

Skills to put on the financial analyst resume

Hard skills

Financial modeling
Models are the analyst's main work product, and interviews often include a modeling test.
Budgeting and forecasting
FP&A roles are built around these cycles, and forecast accuracy is a clear, measurable result.
Variance analysis
Explaining why results differ from plan, and what to do about it, is where analysts add value.
Advanced Excel
Every finance team relies on it, and speed with it is often tested live.
Planning and ERP systems
Tools such as Adaptive, Anaplan, NetSuite or SAP are often named in postings, and matching them helps.
Business cases and ROI
Investment decisions depend on well-built cases, and analysts who build them get noticed by leadership.

Soft skills

Business partnering
Analysts who understand operations give better advice, and department heads seek them out.
Clear presentation of numbers
Executives need the point quickly, so show you can summarize a complex model in a page.
Skepticism
Questioning assumptions protects the company from confident but wrong forecasts.

Mistakes that cost financial analyst interviews

  1. Only showing Excel skill

Every applicant claims advanced Excel. Show what the models were for and what decisions they supported instead.

  2. No sense of scale

Give the size of the budgets, business units or deals you worked on. A forecast for a $5M department and a $500M division are different jobs.

  3. Reporting without recommending

Finance leaders want analysts who say what to do next. Include at least one bullet where your analysis changed a decision.

  4. Listing certification exams vaguely

Say exactly where you are, such as CFA Level II candidate, and the year. Vague references to studying do not carry weight.

  5. Forgetting the systems

Planning and ERP systems are often hard requirements. Name the ones you have used so the screen finds them.

Questions about the financial analyst resume

What should a financial analyst resume include?

Your forecasting and budgeting work, models you built, decisions they supported, the size of the business you covered, and the systems you use. Add certifications such as the CFA if relevant.

Is the CFA useful for corporate finance roles?

It is most valued in investment roles, but it signals strong financial knowledge anywhere. For FP&A, experience with forecasting and business partnering often matters more.

How do I show forecast accuracy on a resume?

State how close the forecast came to actual results over a period, such as within two percent for six quarters, and what you did to achieve it.

How do I move from accounting to financial analysis?

Highlight analysis in your accounting work: variance explanations, budget support and reports for managers. Build a forecasting or modeling example to show the forward-looking side.

Should I include SQL or Python as a financial analyst?

Yes, if you use them. Many finance teams now pull their own data, and those skills make you faster and more independent.

Every application goes out fitting the job.
