Resident Assistant Resume Example

A resident assistant resume works in two directions: it gets you the RA position, then it translates that position for an employer who never lived in a dorm. In both cases the job is the same three things, written with numbers: how many residents you were responsible for, what programs you planned and how many came, and how you handled incidents at 2 a.m.

The Sample resume below is for a third-year psychology major in Iowa City in her second year as an RA for a floor of 48 first-year residents. Her bullets cover the duty rotation, the conduct and wellness incidents she documented, the programs she ran and the retention of her floor into the next year, all facts a housing office tracks and an employer can picture. The orientation leader and desk assistant roles before it show how students typically get into residence life.

If you are applying for your first RA position, the entry variant below shows what a first-year resident with no staff experience can lead with. RA pay is usually a room and meal stipend rather than hourly wages, so pair it with a work-study position or a part-time job on the page if you held one. The camp counselor example is the summer cousin of this role, and the college student example shows how RA work reads on a full-time job search. The Campus template keeps the floor, program and incident numbers easy to scan.

How the resume changes with experience

The same resident assistant resume, written at three levels: a summary and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first role in the title

First-year student applying for a first resident assistant position, with a semester as a residence hall desk assistant, a floor council role and a high school record of peer mentoring.

  • Elected floor representative to the hall council and organized a 40-person floor dinner in the first month.
  • Worked twelve hours a week at the hall front desk, handling guest check-in, keys and about 150 packages a day in peak weeks.
  • Mentored eight incoming ninth graders through a year-long high school program, meeting weekly and reporting concerns to the counselor.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Second-year resident assistant responsible for 48 first-year residents, with 35 documented incidents, 22 programs and a floor retention rate well above the hall average, seeking a senior RA role.

  • Responsible for 48 residents and on duty about six nights a month for a 400-resident hall.
  • Floor retention of 71 percent against a hall average of 58, cited in the rehire review.
  • Referred four residents to counseling after wellness checks rather than handling the situations alone, following the training.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programs

Senior resident assistant and graduating psychology major with three years in residence life, seeking a residence hall coordinator, admissions counselor or student services role.

  • Supervise and mentor eight RAs across two buildings as senior RA, running weekly staff meetings and reviewing every incident report before it goes to the coordinator.
  • Redesigned the hall's roommate agreement process, cutting room change requests in the fall by about a third.
  • Served on the hiring committee that selected 30 new RAs from 140 applicants, scoring group interviews with a rubric.

Skills to put on the resident assistant resume

Hard skills

Incident documentation
Housing offices live on timely, factual reports, and a count of incidents filed on time proves you can write under pressure and follow policy.
Crisis response and referral
Wellness checks and alcohol calls are the hardest part of the job, and Mental Health First Aid plus described referrals show you know your limits.
Program planning and budgets
Every RA posting asks for community programming, and attendance numbers against a budget show you can plan an event people attend.
Conflict mediation
Roommate conflicts are the daily work, and a mediation count or a reduction in room changes tells a coordinator you can handle them.
Confidentiality and reporting laws
FERPA, Title IX reporting and Clery Act training are required, and listing them completed removes an onboarding step.
Housing software
StarRez or a similar system handles rosters, keys and reports, and naming it means less training for the office.

Soft skills

Approachability with boundaries
Residents must be willing to knock on your door, and the office must trust you to enforce policy with the same people the next night.
Calm at 2 a.m.
Duty calls come when you are tired, and a line about documented incidents handled on time is the proof an employer can read.
Working on a staff team
RAs cover for each other, co-plan events and share difficult residents, and references from a hall coordinator depend on it.
Judgment about escalation
Knowing when to call the coordinator, the counseling center or the police, and saying so on the page, is what separates a good RA from a liability.

Mistakes that cost resident assistant interviews

  1. Writing the job description instead of your floor

Fostered an inclusive community describes every RA. Give the resident count, the hall size, the duty frequency, the number of incidents documented and the programs with attendance. Those numbers exist in the housing office's records, so use them.

  2. Leaving out incidents because they sound negative

Handling noise, alcohol and wellness calls is the core responsibility. Describe the volume and the process, including referrals, without naming residents or details. Employers read it as crisis management experience.

  3. Forgetting the stipend question

Because RAs are paid in room and board, some students do not list it as a job. It is a job with a supervisor, hours and evaluations. Put it under experience with the dates and, if you also held an hourly job, list both.

  4. Skipping the training

RA training is two weeks of crisis response, mediation, reporting law and facilitation. Certifications such as Mental Health First Aid and CPR go in their own section; the rest can be a single line in the entry.

  5. No translation for off-campus employers

When you use the RA role on a job search later, add the words an employer uses: on-call duty, incident reporting, program management, budget, supervision. The Sample's senior variant shows how it reads for a student services job.

Questions about the resident assistant resume

How do I write a resume for a resident assistant position with no experience?

Lead with any role where you were responsible for others or for a process: desk assistant, hall council, orientation, peer mentoring, a sport captaincy, a part-time job with closing duties. Add a bullet on how you handled a conflict or a problem. Housing offices hire for judgment and reliability, not for prior RA work.

Does a resident assistant count as work experience?

Yes. It has a supervisor, scheduled duty hours, evaluations and a stipend. List it under experience with your title, the housing department, the dates and bullets with numbers. Employers in education, nonprofit, healthcare and management all recognize it.

How many residents should I say I was responsible for?

The number on your floor or in your community, plus the size of the building you covered on duty if that is larger. Both figures are in the housing office's assignments, and the two together show the scope.

Should I describe specific incidents on my resume?

Describe types and counts, never individuals. Documented 35 incidents including wellness checks referred to counseling is appropriate; anything that could identify a resident is not, and would violate the confidentiality training you are also listing.

What skills from being an RA should I highlight for a job after graduation?

Crisis response and documentation, program and budget management, conflict mediation, public speaking, and supervision if you were a senior RA. Translate each with the number attached, and the hiring manager will see a two-year leadership job.

Is being an RA good for a resume if I am not going into student affairs?

Yes. Managers in healthcare, teaching, social work, hospitality and operations all recognize on-call responsibility for 40 or more people. The key is writing the bullets in their terms, as the mistakes above describe.

Every application goes out fitting the job.
