Financial Analyst Cover Letter Example (Ireland)

A Financial Analyst cover letter in Ireland is read by a finance manager who already has a forecast that is late or a reporting pack nobody trusts, and who wants to know whether you have fixed the same thing somewhere else. The letter says what you own now, how accurate it has been, and which decision your numbers changed, in that order, and it names the systems the advert names because Dublin finance teams screen on them.

The sample below goes with the financial analyst CV example: Orla Brannigan, an FP&A analyst who owns the forecast for a €140 million business unit at a medical device manufacturer in Dublin, applying for a Senior Financial Analyst post on the EMEA FP&A team of a diagnostics company. It opens with the vacancy and the forecast accuracy, spends two paragraphs on business partnering and the reporting rebuild, and closes with the CV, the qualifications and an offer to show the work.

Rewrite the letter for each kind of role. A fund administration post wants NAV and the Central Bank's calendar; a treasury post wants cash and FX; the FP&A letter below leads with forecasting because that is what the advert asked for.

Updated . The person, the employer and the recipient in this sample letter are fictional. Written for applicants in Ireland. It goes with the financial analyst cv example (ireland) for the same person.

Dear Mr Bracken,

Please consider me for the Senior Financial Analyst post on your EMEA FP&A team, advertised on your careers site last week. I own the monthly forecast and the annual budget for a €140 million EMEA business unit at a medical device manufacturer in Dublin, and the quarterly forecast has landed within two per cent of actuals for five consecutive quarters, which is the line in your advert I can answer most directly.

Your posting asks for forecasting built with operations rather than from the ledger alone. At Dodder Valley Medical Devices I partner with the commercial and supply chain directors on headcount and capex plans, and I flagged a hiring plan the budget could not carry before any offers went out. I built the business case for a second packaging line at the Galway plant, with volume scenarios and a payback period, which the board approved for 2025. The forecast runs in Anaplan and the actuals come from SAP, the two systems your advert names.

You also ask for someone who can make monthly reporting self-serve. I rebuilt our variance pack in Power BI on a connected data model, cutting preparation from four days to one and giving plant managers their own view of the numbers, so the monthly conversation is now about causes rather than about the spreadsheet. Before FP&A I spent three years as a Fund Accountant at Liffey Quay Fund Services, reviewing NAVs for eight Irish-domiciled funds with €3.2 billion in combined assets, and that is where I learnt to tie every figure back to its source and to meet a regulator's calendar without a late filing.

My CV is enclosed, with the CIMA Advanced Diploma and my CFA Level II candidacy noted, and I can bring a redacted version of the variance pack to interview. I am available any weekday from 12 October. Thank you for your time.

Yours sincerely,

Orla Brannigan

How this financial analyst cover letter is built

  1. The opening states what she owns and how accurate it has been

A finance manager hiring a senior analyst wants to know the size of the forecast you run and whether it holds up. The sample gives the business unit, the figure in euro and the forecast accuracy in one sentence, then says which line of the advert it answers. There is no sentence about being excited by the opportunity.

  2. The second paragraph is about decisions, not spreadsheets

FP&A adverts in Dublin ask for business partnering, and most letters answer with the phrase itself. This one gives two decisions the numbers changed, the hiring plan stopped and the packaging line approved, both drawn from the financial analyst CV. The last sentence names Anaplan and SAP because the advert did, and a recruiter searching for them will find them.

  3. The third paragraph shows the reporting rebuild and the fund accounting foundation

The variance pack rebuilt in Power BI answers the advert's self-serve requirement with a before-and-after measure. The fund accounting years are then given a sentence, not a paragraph: a finance manager in a multinational wants to know you can reconcile and meet a deadline, and NAVs for €3.2 billion of funds under the Central Bank's calendar say that quickly.

  4. The closing names the qualifications and offers to show the work

CIMA and CFA progress go at the end because they are screening criteria rather than the argument. Offering a redacted variance pack is the finance equivalent of a portfolio and gives the interviewer something to ask about. Availability is one sentence and the thanks is one more.

Mistakes that cost financial analyst interviews

  1. Describing the month-end process instead of the result

A list of what happens in the first five working days of the month is on every analyst's CV. Say what the forecast was within, what the pack now takes to prepare, and which decision changed because of a number you produced. One checkable figure per paragraph is the aim.

  2. Claiming forecast accuracy you cannot evidence

"Highly accurate forecasts" invites the question you then have to answer with a shrug. Give the tolerance and the number of quarters, as the sample does, and only when your actual-versus-forecast reporting supports it. If you do not own a forecast yet, say what you contribute to the one you work on.

  3. Leaving the systems to the CV

Dublin employers name Anaplan, SAP, Oracle, Investran or Power BI in the advert and recruiters screen on them. Put the ones you use in one clause of the body paragraph, in the advert's own words. Do not list fifteen; the two the advert asks for are the ones that count.

  4. Sending a fund administration letter to an FP&A team

NAV review, investor reporting and the regulatory calendar are the right evidence for an IFSC administrator and the wrong lead for a multinational's planning team. Decide which kind of finance team is reading, lead with that evidence, and give the other kind one sentence as background, which is what the sample does with fund accounting.

  5. Burying the qualification

ACCA, CIMA, Chartered Accountants Ireland or CFA progress is often the first screening criterion, and a finance manager should not have to find it on page two of the CV. Name it once in the letter, with the stage you have reached, and leave the exam history for the CV.

  6. Letting the letter grow past a page

An analyst who cannot summarise is a worrying hire. Three or four paragraphs and under 400 words. If you find a fourth project forcing its way in, cut the weakest and leave the CV to carry it.

Questions about the financial analyst cover letter

How long should a Financial Analyst cover letter be?

Four paragraphs on one page, around 300 to 380 words. The sample sits inside that range even though the advert made three separate requests. A finance manager reads the first paragraph to decide whether to continue, so the forecast and its accuracy go there.

Who do I address an FP&A cover letter to?

The finance manager or FP&A lead named on the advert, with "Dear Mr Bracken" and "Yours sincerely". If the advert only names the company, look up the finance team on the company's site or ask the recruiter for the hiring manager's name. "Dear Hiring Team" is acceptable for a large multinational's shared service centre where no name is published.

Should I include numbers from my current employer?

Yes, at the level of detail the CV already states: the size of the business unit, the forecast tolerance, the hours saved on a pack. Do not quote anything confidential such as margin by product or unreleased results. Round figures and say "about" where you are rounding.

How do I write the letter if I am moving from audit or fund administration into FP&A?

Lead with what transfers: reconciliation, deadlines met under a regulator, the model you built in Excel for a client. Then say plainly that you want to move to the planning side and why, and name one thing from your current role that is closer to FP&A than it looks, such as a fee forecast or a budget you prepared for a client. Dublin FP&A teams hire from fund administration every year.

Do I mention that I am studying for CIMA or the CFA?

Say the level and the next exam date in one clause. Employers in Ireland usually fund study and want to know how far along you are and how much study leave they will be asked for. The editor tailors the CV against each advert in about two minutes; keep the qualification stage identical on both documents.

Is a cover letter still needed when the application is a form on the company's careers site?

Attach it if there is a field, and paste the first two paragraphs into the free-text box if there is not. Finance managers in Dublin multinationals read the attachments the recruiter forwards, and a letter that names the forecast, the systems and the decision it changed is the one that gets opened.

Every application goes out fitting the vacancy.
