Primary School Teacher Cover Letter Example (Ireland)

A Primary School Teacher cover letter in Ireland goes to the chairperson of a board of management, usually alongside the Standard Application Form, and the principal who reads it first checks three things: Teaching Council registration, the Irish language requirement, and evidence of what happened for the children you taught. The letter puts those where they are found in the first paragraph and then gives the school a reason to shortlist you over the other applicants who also hold them.

The sample below goes with the primary school teacher CV example: Aisling Dunphy, a mainstream Third Class teacher in a DEIS school in Cork, applying for a permanent mainstream post at another DEIS school in the city. It opens with the post, her registration and her present class, uses the middle paragraphs for the literacy work and the Special Education year the advert asks about, and closes with what is enclosed and an offer to visit.

Change the letter for every school. A Gaelscoil wants Gaeilge throughout, a rural school wants multi-grade planning, an Educate Together school wants its ethos named. The structure stays; the evidence moves.

Updated . The person, the employer and the recipient in this sample letter are fictional. Written for applicants in Ireland. It goes with the primary school teacher cv example (ireland) for the same person.

Application for Permanent Mainstream Class Teacher, EducationPosts.ie ref 2026-0417

Dear Mr Ó Riain,

Please consider my application for the permanent mainstream class teaching post advertised on EducationPosts.ie; my completed Standard Application Form is enclosed. I am Teaching Council registered under Route 1 (Primary), I completed Droichead in 2020, and I have taught for six years in two Cork schools, the last four in a DEIS Band 2 school where I teach Third Class of 29 pupils. Your school's emphasis on literacy and on home-school links is the reason I am applying to Lissard Park rather than to the other posts advertised this term.

At Ballinvarrig National School I led the literacy strand of our school self-evaluation, introducing guided reading groups and a daily ten-minute writing routine from First to Fourth Class; Drumcondra reading scores rose in both years. I plan across the Primary Language Curriculum, maths, SESE and Gaeilge with a classroom SNA supporting two pupils with additional needs, and I coordinate the junior infant transition programme with four local preschools, including the parent information evening that raised uptake of the school's parenting sessions.

Your advert mentions a Special Education Teacher allocation and a wish to hear more Gaeilge across the school day. In my SET year at Kilbrogan Hill National School I supported 24 pupils from Junior Infants to Sixth Class under the Continuum of Support and ran a twelve-week structured phonics intervention for six Second Class pupils, all of whom reached their class reading level by June. I am a fluent Irish speaker with Gaeltacht placements in Corca Dhuibhne behind me, and I teach Gaeilge through stations and games as much as from the textbook. I also sit on my school's Professional Support Team, mentoring a newly qualified teacher through Droichead.

My CV is enclosed with the Standard Application Form, and it gives my Teaching Council number, Garda vetting through the school patron and current Children First training; my principal and a former Special Education colleague are named as referees. I would be glad to visit the school before interview and to teach a sample lesson if the board would find that useful. Thank you for considering my application.

Yours sincerely,

Aisling Dunphy

How this primary school teacher cover letter is built

  1. The opening gives the post, the registration and the present class in three sentences

A principal reading on behalf of the board wants the post confirmed, the Teaching Council status and Droichead confirmed, and the current class named, before anything else. The sample does all three and then adds the one sentence that matters most: why this school. Naming the school's own emphasis on literacy and home-school links shows the writer has read the advert and the school's website.

  2. The second paragraph gives the literacy result the school is looking for

A DEIS school reads for literacy and numeracy interventions and for parent engagement. The letter takes the strongest bullet from the primary school teacher CV, the self-evaluation strand with its Drumcondra result, and follows it with the daily classroom reality: the curriculum areas, the SNA, the transition programme. A principal can picture the class.

  3. The third paragraph answers the two extra things the advert asked for

The advert mentioned the SET allocation and Gaeilge, so the letter gives each a sentence with evidence: the Continuum of Support work with 24 pupils, the phonics group that caught up, the Gaeltacht placements and how Irish is actually taught in the room. The Droichead mentoring line is there because boards like a teacher who will support the next newly qualified colleague.

  4. The closing names the form, the vetting and the referees, then offers a visit

Irish primary posts are applied for on the Standard Application Form, so the letter says it is enclosed and that the CV carries the registration number, the Garda vetting and the Children First training. Naming the referees saves the board a query. The offer to visit and to teach a sample lesson is a confident close that costs nothing to make.

  5. The letter is addressed to the chairperson and signed off formally

Applications for a primary teaching post go to the chairperson of the board of management, not the principal, and the advert on EducationPosts.ie gives the name. "Dear Mr Ó Riain" with "Yours sincerely" is the correct pair; "Dear Sir or Madam" with "Yours faithfully" is for the rare advert with no name at all.

Mistakes that cost primary school teacher interviews

  1. Leaving the Teaching Council status for the form to say

The principal checks registration before reading a word about teaching. Say in the first paragraph that you are registered, under which route, and whether Droichead is complete or in progress. An applicant awaiting registration should say the expected date rather than leave the board guessing.

  2. Writing about a love of children instead of about a class

Every applicant loves teaching, and the board has read that sentence a hundred times. Name the class level, the number of pupils, the curriculum areas and one thing that improved for them. "Third Class of 29 in a DEIS Band 2 school" says more than a paragraph about passion.

  3. Sending a Gaelscoil letter to a DEIS school, or the reverse

A Gaelscoil reads for Gaeilge first and may expect the letter in Irish; a DEIS school reads for interventions and home-school links; a rural school reads for multi-grade planning. Read the school's website and its advert, and move the matching evidence to the second paragraph each time.

  4. Ignoring the Standard Application Form

Most boards shortlist from the form, and some ask for nothing else. Complete it in full, in the same order as the advert's requirements, before you write the letter, and make sure the letter does not contradict it. The letter is where you show judgement; the form is where the facts are checked.

  5. Omitting Garda vetting and child protection training

A board cannot appoint a teacher without vetting through the patron and current Children First training, and a letter that does not mention them creates a question. One clause in the closing paragraph is enough.

  6. Running to two pages

A board of management with sixty applications reads the first page and often stops there. Four paragraphs and about 350 words, on one side of A4, is the limit. Put the detail on the form, where it is expected, and keep the letter for the three or four things that make you the right teacher for this school.

Questions about the primary school teacher cover letter

How long should a primary teacher cover letter be in Ireland?

One side of A4 and no more than four paragraphs. The sample above is around 350 words, which is on the long side for a teaching post because the advert named two extra requirements. A letter for a straightforward mainstream vacancy can be shorter.

Who do I address the letter to?

The chairperson of the board of management, whose name is on the EducationPosts.ie advert. Use "Dear Mr Ó Riain" or "Dear Ms Mulcahy" and sign off "Yours sincerely". If the advert names only the school, ring the office and ask; the secretary will tell you.

Should the letter be in Irish for a Gaelscoil?

If the advert is in Irish, reply in Irish, and have a fluent speaker read it before you send it. If the advert is bilingual, a letter in Irish with the form in English is normal. For an English-medium school, write in English and mention your Gaeilge and your Gaeltacht placements in a sentence.

How do I write the letter if I am newly qualified and Droichead is not finished?

Say that you are registered with conditions and where you are in Droichead, name your school placements and the class levels, and give one thing from a placement that a principal can picture: a station teaching routine, an Aistear set-up, a reading group. Boards hire newly qualified teachers every year and expect this.

What about a fixed-term or maternity-leave post?

The same letter, shorter, with the dates of the contract acknowledged and your availability from the start date stated. Say if you are interested in further work at the school; a board that hires you for a term often has a permanent post the following year.

Do I include my Teaching Council number in the letter?

Say that you are registered and that the number is on the form and the CV; the board will check it on the register. The editor tailors the CV to each school in about two minutes, and the letter should name the same registration details and the same class the CV leads with.
