Project Manager Cover Letter Example (Ireland)

A Project Manager cover letter in Ireland is read by a head of PMO or a programme director who has one project in mind and wants to know whether you have delivered something like it: the same sector, a comparable budget, the same kind of deadline. The letter names that project in the first paragraph and gives its budget, team size, date and outcome before the reader has to go looking for them on the CV.

The sample below goes with the project manager CV example: Deirdre Hanrahan, a PRINCE2 Practitioner running change and IT projects at a Limerick life assurance company, applying for a Senior Project Manager post on the regulatory change portfolio of a pensions provider in the same city. It opens with the vacancy and the migration she recovered, uses the middle paragraphs for the Central Bank deadlines and the governance she built, and closes by naming the CV and asking for an interview.

Write a fresh letter for each vacancy. A pharma or medtech employer wants capital projects and validation; the public sector wants the Public Spending Code; a Dublin multinational wants agile delivery across time zones. Keep the shape and swap the project you lead with.

Updated . The person, the employer and the recipient in this sample letter are fictional. Written for applicants in Ireland. It goes with the project manager cv example (ireland) for the same person.

Application for Senior Project Manager, Regulatory Change, ref PMO-2026-18

Dear Ms Culhane,

I would like to be considered for the Senior Project Manager post on your regulatory change portfolio, advertised on your careers page on 2 October. I am a PRINCE2 Practitioner and PMP with seven years delivering IT and regulatory change for a life assurance company and an energy supplier in the Mid-West, and the project closest to the one you describe is the €4.5 million migration of 310,000 policies that I took over four months behind schedule and delivered two weeks early and about €200,000 under budget.

Your advert asks for someone who has run change to the Central Bank's deadlines. At Treaty Life Assurance I ran the Consumer Protection Code and IFRS 17 change projects, coordinating actuarial, finance and IT workstreams of 35 people across two sites, with a plan the sponsor had read and a risk register the steering committee reviewed. Both landed on the regulator's date. I also led the move of 480 staff to a new telephony and contact centre platform over six weekends, with a support plan that kept call waiting times within target through the cutover.

The post also asks for someone to strengthen portfolio governance. I built the project intake, status and benefits tracking process now used across the Treaty Life change portfolio, replacing ad hoc email updates to the executive team, and I would bring the same discipline to your PMO without adding paperwork that project managers resent. Before Treaty Life I coordinated grid connection and metering projects for Clare Coast Energy, where I tracked change orders across eleven projects and recovered €160,000 in costs that had been approved but never invoiced; I have been careful with other people's money ever since.

My CV is enclosed, with the budget, team size and outcome of each project and the details of my PRINCE2 and PMP certification. I would welcome the chance to walk you through the migration recovery plan at interview, and I am available from the week of 19 October. Thank you for considering my application.

Yours sincerely,

Deirdre Hanrahan

How this project manager cover letter is built

  1. The opening names the post and the one project that resembles it

A head of PMO reads the first sentence to match the letter to the vacancy, then the second to decide whether to keep reading. The sample gives the certification, the sectors and the years in one clause, and then the policy migration with its budget, its recovery and its result. That one project is chosen because the advert is about regulatory change in a life and pensions firm; the energy work waits until later.

  2. The second paragraph takes the advert's first requirement and answers it with dated deliveries

The advert asks for change delivered to the Central Bank's deadlines, so the letter says so and gives two projects with the workstreams, the headcount and the sites, borrowed from the project manager CV. The telephony move is there because it shows a cutover with a service measure held through it, which is what a programme director worries about.

  3. The third paragraph covers governance, which is what a PMO is really hiring for

A senior post in a PMO is partly about the portfolio, not just the project. The intake and benefits process is the evidence, and the clause about not adding paperwork shows the writer knows how project managers feel about PMOs. The Clare Coast Energy line closes the paragraph with a money figure that proves care with budgets started early.

  4. The closing names the CV, offers something for the interview and gives dates

The last paragraph says the CV is enclosed and what it contains, so the reader knows the budget and team size for every project are a page away. Offering to walk through the recovery plan gives the panel an interview question they will want to ask. Availability from a named week saves an email.

  5. The reference line and the sign-off do the housekeeping

The subject line carries the vacancy reference so the letter can be filed against the right competition. The letter is to a named person, so it ends "Yours sincerely"; it would end "Yours faithfully" only after "Dear Sir or Madam". The name is usually on the advert or available from the HR contact in a one-line email.

Mistakes that cost project manager interviews

  1. Listing every project instead of the one that matches

A letter that tours all eleven projects reads like a second CV. Pick the one project that resembles the vacancy in sector, size and deadline, give it the opening paragraph with its numbers, and let the CV carry the rest. The reader is pattern-matching against the project they need to staff.

  2. Giving methodology without money

"Delivered using PRINCE2 and agile" tells a head of PMO nothing about scale. Every project in the letter should carry a euro figure, a headcount or a date, and preferably all three. Irish employers in financial services and energy think in budgets, and a letter without one looks like it is hiding a small one.

  3. Hiding the project that went wrong

Every experienced project manager has inherited a late project. Leaving it out invites the interview question anyway, with no prepared answer. The sample leads with the migration precisely because it was four months behind when the writer took it over; the recovery is the strongest evidence on the page.

  4. Saying "stakeholder management" without naming a stakeholder

The phrase appears in almost every project management letter and proves nothing. Name the steering committee, the sponsor, the regulator or the contractor, and say what you did with them: the plan the sponsor had read, the risk register the committee reviewed, the weekly site meeting with the network operator's liaison staff.

  5. Sending the same letter to a bank and a hospital

Regulatory change, capital projects, public sector competitions and agile product delivery are different jobs that share a title. A letter about Central Bank deadlines sent to a medtech plant that wants validation and GMP will be skipped. Rewrite the first and second paragraphs for each sector; the governance paragraph can usually stay.

  6. Running past one page

A project manager who cannot fit the case into a page undermines the case. Four paragraphs and around 350 words is the ceiling. If a public sector competition asks for a separate competency statement, keep the letter short and put the long examples there, where they are scored.

Questions about the project manager cover letter

How long should a Project Manager cover letter be in Ireland?

One page, three or four paragraphs, between 300 and 380 words. The sample above sits in that range. Irish employers in financial services and the public sector read the letter alongside a CV or an application form, so it points at the evidence rather than repeating it.

Who do I address the letter to when the advert only gives a recruitment agency?

Address it to the agency consultant by name, since they are the first reader, and write the body as if the hiring manager will read it next, because they will. Ask the consultant for the hiring manager's name and the project the role is being hired for; most will tell you, and the letter gets sharper with both.

Should I mention PRINCE2 or PMP in the letter?

Yes, once, in the opening sentence or the closing one. Many Irish adverts list a certification as essential, and HR screens for it before the PMO reads the letter. Do not spend a paragraph on it; the projects are the evidence that you can use what the certification taught.

How do I write the letter for a public sector competition on publicjobs.ie?

Public sector competitions usually ask for a competency-based application form, and that form is what the board scores. The letter becomes a short covering note: the competition reference, the one project that best fits the role, the Public Spending Code if you have worked under it, and where the competency examples are. Keep it under 250 words.

How do I explain a project that was cancelled or failed?

Briefly and without blame. Say what the project was, why it stopped, and what you did at the stop: the benefits that were still realised, the contracts closed cleanly, the lessons that changed how you ran the next one. A panel in Ireland will ask about it anyway, and a letter that mentions it first reads as honest rather than worrying.

Do I need a cover letter when the application is through an agency portal?

Attach one if the portal allows it, and paste the first paragraph into the message box if it does not. Agencies forward the CV first and the letter second, but the hiring manager who sees both gets the project match in the first sentence, which the CV cannot give. The editor tailors the CV against the advert in about two minutes; the letter should follow the same project.
