Sales Assistant Cover Letter Example (UK)

A Sales Assistant cover letter in the UK has to convince a store manager of three things: that you can sell without pushing, that you will turn up for the weekend and Christmas rota, and that the till, the cash and the age-restricted sales are safe with you. Managers read these letters between deliveries, so the first paragraph carries the sales figure and the second carries the shop-floor detail, with nothing about passion for fashion in between.

The sample below goes with the sales assistant CV example: Chloe Rimmer, a sales assistant and keyholder at a Leicester clothing store, applying for a senior sales assistant post in the womenswear department of a department store across town. It opens with the vacancy and the target she beats, uses two paragraphs for loyalty sign-ups, floor sets, keyholding and the homewares store before that, with the numbers her CV already states, and closes with the enclosure and the interview request.

Rewrite it for each retailer. A department store wants clienteling and product knowledge; a supermarket wants speed and replenishment; a phone shop wants targets; a charity shop wants Gift Aid and volunteers. The structure stays.

Updated . The person, the employer and the recipient in this sample letter are fictional. Written for applicants in the UK. It goes with the sales assistant cv example (uk) for the same person.

Sales Assistant and Keyholder, Fashion and Homewares

Mr Tobias MarchantStore ManagerBelgrave & LaneLeicester

Dear Mr Marchant,

I'd like to be considered for the Senior Sales Assistant post in Womenswear at your Leicester store, advertised in the window and on your careers page. I have five years in fashion and homewares, the last two as a sales assistant and keyholder at Granby Street Outfitters, where I have beaten my monthly sales target in 21 of the last 24 months and had the highest average transaction value on a team of twelve last year. Your advert asks for someone who can build a regular customer base and run the department floor when the manager is off, and that is the job I am doing now.

At Granby Street I sign up around 40 customers a month to the loyalty scheme, among the highest figures in the region, and I invite my regulars to the new-season previews that make our opening weekends. I lead the monthly floor sets with the visual merchandiser across a 500 square metre store to the brand's planograms, and as keyholder I open and close the store, cash up, bank the takings and set the alarm. I train every new starter on the till and the returns policy, which is why the manager leaves me the floor on her days off.

Before that I advised customers on homewares and garden furniture at Soar Valley Home & Garden in Loughborough, with a mystery shopper score above the company average every quarter, and I took click-and-collect orders and processed deliveries through two Christmas peaks. I handled refunds, exchanges and Challenge 25 checks on age-restricted lines without a single audit failure. I am used to a rota with weekends and the run-up to Christmas, because that is when the customers are in.

My CV is enclosed with the detail of both roles and my Level 2 Certificate in Retail Skills. I would welcome the chance to meet you on the shop floor, and I am available for interview on any day I am not on shift, with a week's notice to my current store. Thank you for your time.

Yours sincerely,

Chloe Rimmer

How this sales assistant cover letter is built

  1. The opening gives the target figure and claims the two things the advert wants

A store manager hires on whether you sell, so the sales target and the average transaction value are in the second sentence, with the months counted so the claim can be checked. The third sentence picks the two requirements the advert leads with, regulars and running the floor, and says the applicant does both already. No sentence about loving fashion; the numbers say it.

  2. The second paragraph is the shop floor in detail

Loyalty sign-ups, previews, floor sets, opening and closing, cashing up and training new starters are the lines a manager wants to see for a senior post, and every one comes from the sales assistant CV with the same numbers: 40 a month, 500 square metres. The last sentence, about being left the floor on the manager's days off, is the single best piece of evidence for a senior role, because it is a judgement a manager made rather than a claim the applicant is making.

  3. The third paragraph covers the earlier store, compliance and the rota

The homewares job proves the pattern held somewhere else: mystery shopper scores, click and collect, Christmas peaks. Challenge 25 without an audit failure is a compliance line that department stores and supermarkets check, and it takes one sentence. The rota sentence answers the question every retail manager asks before anything else and says it plainly.

  4. The closing asks to meet on the shop floor and gives availability around shifts

Retail interviews often happen in store and at short notice, so offering to come in on a non-shift day with a week's notice makes the manager's life easy. The enclosure line names the CV and the certificate, and the letter ends with a single thank-you and Yours sincerely, because it is addressed to a named person.

Mistakes that cost sales assistant interviews

  1. Writing about the brand instead of the selling

A paragraph on how much you love the store's clothes tells the manager you are a customer, not a sales assistant. One sentence on why this store is fine; the rest of the letter should be what you sold, to how many people, and how you kept them coming back.

  2. Leaving out numbers because you were never given any

Not every shop reports target figures to the floor, but every sales assistant can count: transactions on a busy Saturday, loyalty sign-ups a week, new starters trained, the size of the store. Use the figures you can stand behind and say "around" when they are estimates. A manager trusts a rough number with a source over a vague adjective.

  3. Hiding the availability question

Managers reject applicants who cannot work weekends, late-night Thursdays or the December rota, and they would rather know now. State the days and hours you can work in one sentence. If you are a student with exam weeks, say when; a manager can plan around a known gap.

  4. Sending the same letter to a department store and a supermarket

A department store reads for clienteling, product knowledge and presentation; a supermarket reads for speed on the till, replenishment and flexibility; a phone shop reads for targets and upselling. Pick the paragraph that matches the shop and move it up. The sample leads with regulars and floor sets because the vacancy is in a department store.

  5. Skipping the compliance lines

Cash handling, Challenge 25, refunds policy and keyholding are the things a manager has to trust you with on your first week, and they are missing from most letters. One sentence that says you have done them without an audit failure is worth more than another sentence about customer service.

  6. Running past one page

A store manager reads the letter standing up. Three or four short paragraphs and under 350 words is right; the manager will ask about the rest in the interview, usually on the shop floor.

Questions about the sales assistant cover letter

How long should a sales assistant cover letter be?

Three or four short paragraphs, around 300 words; the sample above is a little longer because it covers two stores and the keyholder duties. Store managers read it between tasks and want the sales figure, the floor detail and your availability within the first half of the page.

Do I need a cover letter for a retail job?

When you hand a CV in at the store, a short letter clipped to it is what gets it read rather than put on the pile, and the manager often rings the same day. Online applications usually have an optional box; fill it with the first two paragraphs. For a seasonal post the letter can be shorter, but it should still give your availability.

What should I write if I have never worked in a shop?

Lead with any work where you dealt with the public and handled money: a cafe, a market stall, a leisure centre, a school fete you ran the till for. Give it the same detail you would give a shop job, with numbers where you have them, and say which hours you can work. A manager hiring for a first retail job is reading for reliability and whether you will talk to customers, and both show in a letter.

Who do I address it to?

The store manager, by name. If the advert does not give one, go into the store and ask, or ring; most will tell you. "Dear Mr Marchant" with "Yours sincerely" is right for a named person in the UK. Use "Dear Sir or Madam" with "Yours faithfully" only when you really cannot find the name.

How do I ask for a senior or supervisor role from a sales assistant job?

Show the parts of your current job that are already supervisory: keyholding, cashing up, training new starters, leading a floor set, covering the manager's days off. Then say why the step now. The sample does this in its second paragraph, and the sentence about being left the floor is the one that makes the case.

Should I mention a Saturday job or seasonal work from years ago?

Yes if it is retail and it fills a gap or shows a skill the advert asks for, such as Christmas peak experience or age-restricted sales. One clause is enough. If you have more recent retail work, the older job can stay on the CV and out of the letter.
