Sales Assistant CV Example (UK)

A Sales Assistant is hired to help customers find what they came in for and to keep the shop floor, the till and the stockroom running. A store manager wants to see that you can sell without pushing, that you are reliable on a rota with weekends and Christmas, and that you have the till, cash handling and age-restricted sales right. Sales numbers, even simple ones such as the loyalty sign-ups you took, set you apart from applicants who only list duties.

The Sample CV below is for a sales assistant with five years in clothing and homewares in Leicester, now a keyholder. It uses the numbers UK retailers track: sales against target, average transaction value, loyalty card sign-ups and mystery shopper scores. It also shows visual merchandising and training new starters, which is how a sales assistant becomes a supervisor.

Tailor it to the retailer. A department store wants product knowledge and clienteling; a supermarket wants speed, flexibility and replenishment; a phone shop wants targets and upselling; a charity shop wants Gift Aid and volunteers. The US counterpart of this page is the sales associate resume example, written for American stores on one Letter page; a UK CV uses the title Sales Assistant and two sides of A4 at most. The Brief template fits a one-page retail CV.

Updated . The person and employers in this Sample CV are fictional. Written for applicants in the UK; the page for applicants in the US is the sales associate resume example.

How a UK CV differs

In the UK the job is a Sales Assistant or Retail Assistant, not a Sales Associate, and the CV runs to one or two sides of A4 with no photo and no date of birth. Age matters in a different way: the CV should state that you are over 18 if the store sells alcohol or other age-restricted goods, since Challenge 25 and the licensing rules depend on it. Many retailers recruit through an online application with a short questionnaire and then a group assessment, so the CV needs the advert's own words for the keyword match and should show availability for weekends, evenings and the Christmas period. GCSEs in English and maths are often asked for, and a Level 2 retail qualification or an apprenticeship is a recognised route in.

For a sales assistant in the UK

  1. Sales Assistant, Retail Assistant, Customer Advisor

Use the title the retailer uses in its advert, since the keyword match and the store manager both look for it. Keep keyholder or supervisor in the headline only where you held the keys.

  2. Availability and the Christmas period

A line stating the days and hours you can work, including weekends and the Christmas peak, answers the store manager's first question. Temporary Christmas posts are a common route to a permanent one.

  3. Over 18 and Challenge 25

If the store sells alcohol, knives or lottery tickets, say that you are over 18 and name the Challenge 25 training you have had. A licensing failure costs a store its licence, so this is checked.

  4. GCSEs and retail qualifications

List GCSE English and maths with grades, and a Level 2 Certificate in Retail Skills or a retail apprenticeship if you hold one. Supermarkets and department stores screen on them.

  5. Referees from a store manager

Write referees available on request, and have a store manager or supervisor ready rather than a teacher if you can. Retail employers ring them, and a manager who confirms your reliability on the rota counts for more than a grade.

Every CV in the UK

A4 paper
Set the page to A4, 210 by 297 millimetres. A Letter-sized PDF prints with odd margins on A4 and reads as imported from the US.
Two pages is normal
Most UK CVs run to two pages. One page suits a first job; three is rare and only for senior roles with a lot to show.
No photo, no date of birth
UK employers do not expect a photo, a date of birth, marital status or nationality on a CV, and most prefer not to see them.
Dates as DD/MM/YYYY
Day first where a full date appears, and month and year for each role: "Mar 2022 – Present". Never the US month-first order.
British English
Organise, programme, centre, licence, specialise. A CV in American spelling reads as written for somewhere else.
Town and postcode area, not a street address
A line such as "Manchester, M4" is enough. A full postal address, and the US-style "City, ST 12345" line, are not expected.

How the CV changes with experience

The same sales assistant CV, written at three levels: a profile and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first post in the title

Outgoing sixth-former with a Saturday job on a café till and a school enterprise stall, looking for a first sales assistant post with weekend and holiday hours.

  • Served and took payments on a busy café till on Saturdays for a year.
  • Ran a school enterprise stall that sold out at two Christmas fairs.
  • Known at school and work for turning up on time and staying until the job is done.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Sales assistant with three years in a sports shop, advising customers on footwear and kit and meeting monthly targets.

  • Advise customers on running shoes and kit based on their sport and level.
  • Meet the monthly sales and add-on targets in most months.
  • Restock and tidy the floor after busy weekends and school holidays.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programmes

Senior sales assistant and supervisor with eight years leading the shop floor, coaching new starters and driving results in a high-footfall city centre store.

  • Run the shop floor on peak shifts and allocate zones to the team.
  • Coach new starters on selling, product knowledge and the loyalty scheme.
  • Consistently among the top sellers in the region on the weekly league table.

Skills to put on the sales assistant CV

Hard skills

Selling and add-ons
Helping a customer choose well builds a bigger basket and a return visit, and UK retailers measure both.
Loyalty sign-ups and clienteling
Customers who come back for you are valuable to any store, and sign-up numbers are proof a manager can check.
Visual merchandising
A well-set floor sells more, and sales assistants who help with floor sets move up faster.
EPOS tills and cash handling
Every sales assistant covers the till, and accurate cashing up protects the store and earns the keys.
Stock, replenishment and click and collect
Keeping product on the floor and orders ready prevents the lost sale, and stockroom work is half of most shifts.

Soft skills

Friendliness
Customers buy from people they like, and your manner shapes the store's reviews.
Listening
Understanding what the customer wants is the start of a good sale and a returned customer.
Flexibility on the rota
Retail rotas change, especially at Christmas and in the sales, and managers hire people who can cover.
Teamwork
Busy Saturdays depend on the team covering for each other on the till, the floor and the stockroom.

Mistakes that cost sales assistant interviews

  1. No sales figures at all

If the store tracked targets, average transaction value or loyalty sign-ups, give your numbers. Even a modest one turns a common job into a strong application.

  2. Only duties

Served customers and tidied shelves describe every sales assistant in the country. Show what you achieved within the job: a top-seller week, a mystery shop score, a new starter you trained.

  3. No product area

Name the products you know, such as footwear, electricals, homewares or fresh food. It matters for specialist retailers and for a department store placing you on the right floor.

  4. Hiding the keys

Opening, closing, cashing up and banking show trust. Include them; they are the evidence a manager wants before giving you a supervisor shift.

  5. Ignoring the advert's words

Online retail applications scan for words such as customer service, targets, merchandising and availability. Use the same terms the advert does, and say the hours you can work.

Questions about the sales assistant CV

What should a Sales Assistant CV include?

Customer service and sales results, product knowledge, till and cash handling, stock and merchandising, availability for weekends and Christmas, GCSEs in English and maths, and any keyholder or training responsibilities.

How do I show sales skills without sales numbers?

Describe what you did well, such as helping customers find a whole outfit or being asked for by regulars, and use any recognition you had: employee of the month, a mystery shop score or a manager's praise in an appraisal.

How do I write a Sales Assistant CV with no experience?

Lead with people skills from school, volunteering, a Saturday job or a sports team, and with reliability. A short profile about the products you care about helps, and so does a clear line on the hours you can work.

Should I say I am over 18?

Yes, if the store sells alcohol or other age-restricted goods, because the licensing rules require it. One line in the contact section is enough, with no date of birth.

How long should a Sales Assistant CV be?

One side of A4 for a first or second retail job, two at most once you have keyholder, training or supervisor experience to show. Keep the most recent and most relevant store first.

How do I tailor the CV for a retailer's online application?

Use the advert's words for the tasks, name the product area, state your availability and move the most relevant store to the top. Resume Master rewrites the CV against a pasted advert in about two minutes, which helps when you apply to several shops in a week.
