Secondary School Teacher Cover Letter Example (UK)

A Secondary School Teacher cover letter in the UK is read by a headteacher and a head of department who shortlist against the person specification and the school's own priorities: results, behaviour, the progress of disadvantaged pupils and safeguarding. The letter has to put QTS, the subject and the key stages in the first two sentences, then give the outcomes in the terms a school is measured on, so that a panel can see where each criterion is met before they open the application form.

The sample below goes with the secondary school teacher CV example: Callum Ferrier, a chemistry teacher and second in department at a Nottingham academy, applying for a head of chemistry post at an 11 to 18 academy nearby. It opens with the post and the result that fits it, uses two paragraphs for the scheme of work, the intervention programme, mentoring and safeguarding with the figures his CV already states, and closes with the form, the CV and a request to visit before interview.

Write a fresh letter for every school. A head of department post wants curriculum and results across a team; a pastoral post wants tutoring and safeguarding; an independent school wants A level and co-curricular work. Keep the order and change the evidence.

Updated . The person, the employer and the recipient in this sample letter are fictional. Written for applicants in the UK. It goes with the secondary school teacher cv example (uk) for the same person.

Application for Head of Chemistry (TLR 2b), January 2027 start

Dear Mr Pemberton,

I am applying for the post of Head of Chemistry advertised on the TES for a January start. I am a chemistry teacher with QTS and six years across two Nottinghamshire academies, second in science at Trentside Academy since 2023, where I lead the Year 11 intervention programme that has raised the department's grade 5 and above outcomes in combined science two years running. Your advert asks for a head of subject who can rebuild the scheme of work and raise outcomes for disadvantaged pupils, and both are things I have done at Trentside.

I teach chemistry to key stages 4 and 5 and combined science to key stage 3, around 22 periods a week across nine classes of 28 to 32 pupils. I rewrote the key stage 3 chemistry scheme of work around the AQA specification, with retrieval starters and a shared bank of assessed practicals that all seven science teachers now use, and the intervention programme I lead has narrowed the gap for disadvantaged pupils as well as lifting the headline grades. I mentor two early career teachers through their two-year induction, observing weekly and writing their progress reviews; both passed their first-year assessment.

At Sherwood Heath School before that I was form tutor to a Year 9 group of 30, ran daily tutor time and parents' evenings, and made the first-line safeguarding referrals for the group; I have since completed deputy designated safeguarding lead training. I also ran the STEM club and the Year 8 science fair, with 60 pupils entering the regional round in its second year. My enhanced DBS check is on the update service.

My completed application form and CV are enclosed, with the detail of both posts and my referees. I would welcome a visit to the department before interview, and I am available on any day after school or during the half-term week. Thank you for considering my application.

Yours sincerely,

Callum Ferrier

How this secondary school teacher cover letter is built

  1. The opening gives QTS, the subject, the current responsibility and the result

A headteacher reads the first two sentences to confirm the applicant is qualified, teaches the subject and holds a responsibility already. The Year 11 intervention result is the fit for a head of department post, so it comes before anything about teaching style. The third sentence matches the advert's two priorities, curriculum and disadvantaged pupils, and says they have been done, not that the applicant is passionate about them.

  2. The second paragraph is the curriculum and results paragraph

Timetable load, the scheme of work, the practicals bank and the intervention programme are the four lines a head of department panel scores, and the letter takes them from the secondary school teacher CV with the same numbers: 22 periods, nine classes, seven teachers. The mentoring sentence shows the applicant can develop staff, which is what a TLR holder is paid for, and it ends with the checkable fact that both early career teachers passed.

  3. The third paragraph covers pastoral work, safeguarding and co-curricular evidence

Every school shortlists on safeguarding, so the form tutor role, the referrals and the deputy DSL training have a paragraph of their own. The STEM club and the science fair show the applicant contributes outside the timetable, which the advert for a head of subject will ask for. The DBS sentence is one line and saves the school a question.

  4. The closing names the form and the CV and asks to visit

Teaching posts are applied for on the school's own form, so the letter says it is complete and that the CV goes with it. A visit before interview is normal in schools and headteachers read the request as interest in the department rather than the salary. Availability is given around the school day, and the letter ends with Yours sincerely to a named headteacher.

  5. The subject line gives the TLR and the start date

Schools advertise several posts at once and recruit to a term, so the reference line names the post, the TLR and the start the advert gave. It lets the office file the application against the right vacancy and tells the panel the applicant has read the dates.

Mistakes that cost secondary school teacher interviews

  1. Opening with your philosophy of education

A paragraph on why you became a teacher is the most common opening and the one panels skip. Put QTS, the subject, the key stages and the current responsibility in the first two sentences, and let the philosophy show in the evidence: the scheme you rewrote, the pupils whose grades rose, the trainees who passed.

  2. Giving results without the measure

"Excellent results" means nothing to a head of department who lives on progress scores and grade 5 and above. Say which measure moved, for which cohort, over how long, and say whether disadvantaged pupils moved with it. If your school does not share figures, give the class-level facts you know, such as a mixed-ability group that finished above the school's progress target.

  3. Forgetting safeguarding

Safeguarding is an essential criterion on every teaching post and most letters leave it to the form. One sentence on the referrals you make, the training you hold and your DBS status answers the criterion and tells the headteacher you take it as part of the job rather than an afterthought.

  4. Writing a letter that could go to any school

Headteachers can tell when a letter has been sent to twelve schools, because it mentions none of them. Name one thing about this school from its website or the advert, such as its sixth form, its specification or its last inspection priority, and say how your evidence fits it. The sample picks the two priorities the advert named.

  5. Running to two pages

Schools often ask for a supporting statement on the form as well, so the letter does not need to carry everything. Four or five paragraphs and under 400 words. A head of department reading forty applications in an evening rewards a letter that gets to the results quickly.

  6. Applying for a head of department post without a line on leading adults

A TLR post is about staff as much as pupils. If you have mentored trainees, led a scheme that other teachers use or run a department meeting, say so with the numbers. A letter that is all classroom evidence reads as an application for a main-scale post.

Questions about the secondary school teacher cover letter

How long should a secondary school teacher cover letter be?

One page and under 400 words; the sample above is about 320. Most schools also ask for a supporting statement on the application form, which is where the longer evidence against each criterion goes. The letter introduces the application and makes the panel want to read the statement.

Who do I address a teaching cover letter to?

The headteacher, by name, as the advert gives it; for a trust-wide post, the executive head or the trust's HR lead named on the posting. "Dear Mr Pemberton" with "Yours sincerely" is the form for a named person. "Dear Sir or Madam" and "Yours faithfully" is the fallback when a pool application gives no name.

Should I apply with a CV or the school's application form?

Always the form, because safer recruitment rules require it and a CV alone is usually returned. Attach the CV as well where the form allows; it gives the panel the timetable detail and the qualifications in one place. The letter should say that both are enclosed, as the sample does.

How do I write about a move from main scale to head of department?

Lead with the leadership you already do without the title: a scheme of work other teachers use, the intervention programme you run, the early career teachers you mentor, the exam board moderation you attend. Give the results of each. Then say why the step now and what you would do in the first term. A panel appoints a head of subject on evidence of leading adults, so the letter should show it.

What if I am an early career teacher applying for my second post?

Say which year of induction you are in or that you have completed it, name the key stages and exam boards you have taught, and give the one class-level result you can stand behind, such as a Year 11 group whose mock grades rose between November and March. Then say what you want from the next school. Panels hiring an early career teacher are reading for judgement and resilience, and a letter that is honest about where you are shows both.

Can I apply to an independent school with the same letter?

Change the emphasis. An independent school reads for A level teaching, co-curricular work, boarding duties where they apply and the ability to teach a small class to a high level, so the STEM club, the science fair and key stage 5 chemistry move up and the intervention programme moves down. The person specification will be different too, so read it before you reorder anything.
