Trainee Recruitment Consultant CV Example (UK)

A Trainee Recruitment Consultant CV is not judged on recruitment experience, because the reader knows you have none. A UK branch manager or an agency's graduate talent team reads it for something narrower: proof that you can pick up the phone to strangers all day, cope with being told no, hit a number someone else set, and stay organised while doing it. Sales jobs, bar shifts, call centre targets, sports captaincy and student fundraising all count, if you write them as evidence of those four things.

The Sample CV below is for a history graduate from Birmingham who has spent a year as an inside sales executive for a business energy broker and worked behind a bar through university. Every bullet gives a target, a volume or a result, because a recruitment director will ask how you measure yourself before they ask anything else.

If you are applying in the United States, the US recruiter resume example is written for experienced recruiters there and uses American conventions. For UK trainee schemes, one side of A4 is usually enough, and the Campus template keeps a short history clean and easy to scan. When you have your first year of billings, the Recruitment Consultant CV shows what the next version looks like.

How a UK CV differs

A trainee consultant CV in the UK is aimed at agencies, not at in-house HR, so it reads more like a junior sales CV than an HR graduate's. American recruiter pages assume you already have hires to count; UK trainee schemes recruit graduates and career changers in large numbers each year and test for phone confidence, targets and motivation. Agencies also run assessment days with role-plays, so your CV should give interviewers stories they can ask you to expand on.

For a trainee recruitment consultant in the UK

  1. Lead with targets, not duties

Put a number in every bullet you can: calls a day, meetings booked, sales against target, pledges raised. A trainee scheme manager is looking for someone who already measures their own output.

  2. Say which desk interests you

If you want IT, construction, finance or healthcare, say so in the summary and give a reason, such as a degree, a family trade or a part-time job. Agencies place trainees on desks, and a clear interest makes that easy.

  3. Graduate scheme or direct trainee role

Large agencies run graduate programmes with intakes and assessment centres; smaller independents hire trainees whenever a desk has space. Check which one you are applying to and keep the CV to one side of A4 for either.

  4. Make part-time work count

Bar, retail and call centre jobs show the habits agencies want: handling difficult people, working evenings and weekends, and selling. Write them as properly as a graduate job, with a result in each.

  5. No REC qualification needed yet

Most agencies put trainees through the REC Certificate in Recruitment Practice after probation. You do not need it to apply, but saying you would like to take it shows you see recruitment as a career.

Every CV in the UK

A4 paper
Set the page to A4, 210 by 297 millimetres. A Letter-sized PDF prints with odd margins on A4 and reads as imported from the US.
Two pages is normal
Most UK CVs run to two pages. One page suits a first job; three is rare and only for senior roles with a lot to show.
No photo, no date of birth
UK employers do not expect a photo, a date of birth, marital status or nationality on a CV, and most prefer not to see them.
Dates as DD/MM/YYYY
Day first where a full date appears, and month and year for each role: "Mar 2022 – Present". Never the US month-first order.
British English
Organise, programme, centre, licence, specialise. A CV in American spelling reads as written for somewhere else.
Town and postcode area, not a street address
A line such as "Manchester, M4" is enough. A full postal address, and the US-style "City, ST 12345" line, are not expected.

How the CV changes with experience

The same trainee recruitment consultant CV, written at three levels: a profile and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first post in the title

Final-year business student with two summers in a hotel events team and a part-time retail job, applying for graduate recruitment schemes starting next September.

  • Took enquiries and booked site visits for weddings and conferences at a 120-room hotel over two summers.
  • Hit weekly upsell targets on loyalty cards in a high-street fashion store during term time.
  • Organised the university's careers fair stand for the business society, contacting thirty local employers by phone.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Career changer with four years managing a gym's membership sales team, moving into recruitment to work with people decisions rather than contracts.

  • Led a team of three membership advisers against monthly joining and retention targets.
  • Recruited and interviewed every new adviser for the club, writing the adverts and running the trial shifts.
  • Brought the club's cancellation rate down by calling every member who had not visited for three weeks.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programmes

Former hospitality operations manager with ten years in multi-site restaurants, joining an agency's hospitality desk as a trainee consultant with a network of chefs and managers already in place.

  • Hired more than 150 front-of-house and kitchen staff across six restaurants over ten years.
  • Know the general managers of most independent restaurants in the city by name.
  • Ran the group's temporary staff budget and worked with three agencies, so I know what a client expects from one.

Skills to put on the trainee recruitment consultant CV

Hard skills

Outbound calling
A trainee's first months are phone-heavy, and a call count on your CV tells the manager you will not need persuading to pick up.
Working to a target
Agencies pay commission on billings, and a CV that shows a number you beat month after month answers the question every interviewer asks first.
A CRM such as Salesforce or HubSpot
Recruitment runs on Bullhorn, Vincere or similar systems, and a trainee who already keeps clean records learns them in a week.
LinkedIn search
Finding and approaching candidates on LinkedIn is a daily task from week one, and showing you can already search and message well is a head start.
Clear written communication
Job adverts, candidate summaries and client emails all carry your name, and a tidy CV is the first sample a branch manager sees.
A full driving licence
Many agency desks outside London visit clients and sites, and adverts often list it as essential.

Soft skills

Resilience
Most calls end without a result, and managers look for trainees who have already kept going through a slow week.
Competitiveness
Recruitment floors post league tables, and an honest sign that you like to win, from sales or sport, reads well.
Organisation
Juggling candidates, interviews and client deadlines at once is the part new consultants find hardest.
Curiosity about people
Good consultants ask the second question, which is how you find out why a candidate really wants to move.

Mistakes that cost trainee recruitment consultant interviews

  1. Apologising for no experience

Trainee roles are written for people without recruitment experience. Replace lines like 'although I have not worked in recruitment' with the evidence you do have: targets, phone work, people you hired or trained.

  2. An HR-style personal statement

Talking about a passion for people and talent development reads as an in-house HR application. Agencies want energy, money motivation and resilience, so say plainly that you want a target and a commission.

  3. Part-time jobs left off

Graduates often drop bar or shop work to make room for the degree. For an agency, those jobs are the most relevant thing on the page, so keep them and give each a result.

  4. No numbers anywhere

A CV for a sales-driven role with no numbers on it suggests you have never been measured. Even a society fundraising total, a monthly sales figure or the number of people you trained is better than none.

  5. Sending the same CV to every agency

An IT recruitment firm and a care staffing agency look for different stories. Move the most relevant job up, change the summary to name their desk, and mention their sector if you have any link to it.

Write bullets with the XYZ formula: what changed, the number that shows it, and how you did it, in one line.

Questions about the trainee recruitment consultant CV

Can I become a Trainee Recruitment Consultant without a degree?

Yes. Many UK agencies hire trainees from sales, hospitality and retail without a degree, especially smaller independents. Show targets you hit, people you managed or trained, and a good reason for wanting the job.

What should a trainee recruiter put in the personal summary?

Three short sentences: your background, the strongest evidence that you can work to a target on the phone, and the kind of desk or training you are looking for. Leave out general claims about being a people person.

What do agencies test at a trainee assessment day?

Usually a role-play phone call to a client or candidate, a short interview about targets and motivation, and sometimes a group task. Your CV should give them examples to dig into, so make sure every result on it is one you can talk through.

Is a sales background good for recruitment?

It is one of the best. Agency recruitment is sales with people on both sides, and a record of calls, meetings and closes is exactly what a branch manager hopes to see.

How long should my CV be for a graduate recruitment scheme?

One side of A4 is right for most trainees. If you have several years of earlier work as a career changer, two sides is fine as long as the first holds the strongest target-led evidence.

How do I tailor my CV to a particular recruitment agency?

Read the advert for the desk and the market they recruit in, then move your most relevant job and result to the top and name their sector in your summary. Resume Master can reorder your CV against the advert you paste in, and you check that every claim still sounds like you.
