Account Executive Resume Example

Sales leaders hiring an account executive look for three numbers before anything else: your quota, your attainment and your average deal size. Put all three in the first lines of every role, then use the remaining bullets to show how you win.

The Sample resume below is for a mid-market account executive with five years of closing experience in B2B software, after starting as a sales development representative. Each role opens with attainment by year, then moves to the deals and habits behind it: a competitive displacement, a multi-threaded enterprise deal, a shorter sales cycle. The sales motion (inbound, outbound, new logo or expansion) is stated plainly, because a hiring manager is matching you to their own motion.

When you tailor for a posting, match its segment and deal size. A small-business role closing in two weeks and an enterprise role closing in nine months want different evidence. For the next step after closing, see the sales manager example; for keeping and growing existing customers, the account manager example covers that motion.

How the resume changes with experience

The same account executive resume, written at three levels: a summary and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first role in the title

Sales development representative moving into a closing role, with a year of outbound prospecting and a first small-business quota.

  • Booked 160 qualified meetings in twelve months, ranking first among six representatives.
  • Closed 22 small-business deals in a first quarter as an associate account executive.
  • Wrote the objection-handling guide now used in new-hire training.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Account executive with four years of closing experience who hits quota consistently in a mid-market, new-logo motion.

  • Finished above quota in three of the last four years at an average deal size of $55,000.
  • Shortened the average sales cycle by a month by moving security review to the first call.
  • Build a third of pipeline through outbound prospecting each quarter.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programs

Enterprise account executive with nine years of experience closing six-figure deals with large organizations and mentoring newer sellers.

  • Closed the company's largest-ever contract, a multi-year agreement worth $1.4 million.
  • Exceeded an enterprise quota of $2.5 million for three consecutive years.
  • Mentor four account executives on deal strategy and executive-level negotiation.

Skills to put on the account executive resume

Hard skills

Quota attainment
It is the first thing a sales leader looks for, so give quota and attainment for every year you carried one.
Discovery and qualification
Interviewers probe how you decide which deals to pursue, and naming a method like MEDDICC gives them something to test.
Pipeline generation
Teams value closers who do not rely only on inbound leads, so show the share of pipeline you sourced yourself.
Negotiation and closing
Discounting discipline and multi-year terms show you protect revenue as well as win it.
CRM and sales tools
Postings name Salesforce, HubSpot, Gong or Outreach, and matching them helps the tracking system and the recruiter.
Forecast accuracy
Managers promote sellers whose commits land, and a line on forecast accuracy signals you are ready for more territory.

Soft skills

Resilience
Losing deals is routine, and hiring managers ask how you recover from a slow quarter.
Listening
Good discovery depends on letting the buyer talk, which shows up in shorter cycles and higher win rates.
Coachability
Sales teams run on call reviews and feedback, and hiring managers look for people who change after hearing it.

Mistakes that cost account executive interviews

  1. No quota, or attainment without the quota

Exceeded quota means little without the number. Give the quota, the attainment and, if it helps, your rank on the team.

  2. Listing only the best year

Hiring managers notice a missing year and assume the worst. Show each year, and explain a weak one briefly in an interview rather than hiding it.

  3. Vague deal descriptions

Closed a large deal could be anything. Give the value, the length of the sales cycle and who you sold to.

  4. Mismatched segment

Enterprise and small-business selling are different jobs. If you are moving between them, highlight the deals most like the ones the new team works.

  5. A summary full of adjectives

Driven, results-oriented closer is on every sales resume. Replace it with your segment, your deal size and one attainment figure.

Questions about the account executive resume

How should an account executive show quota on a resume?

Put it in the first bullet under each role: the quota amount, the attainment as a number or percentage of that quota, and your team ranking if it is strong.

What if I missed quota one year?

List it honestly next to the other years. In the interview, explain what changed, such as a territory split or a product gap, and what you did in response.

Do sales development roles belong on an account executive resume?

Yes, briefly. They show how you learned to prospect, and a fast promotion out of the role is a strong signal on its own.

How long should an account executive resume be?

One page for most account executives. Senior enterprise sellers with many years and large deals can use two, but the first page must carry the attainment story.

Should I tailor my resume for each sales job?

Yes. Match the segment, deal size and motion in the posting, move the closest deals to the top and use the same tool names the posting uses.

Every application goes out fitting the job.
