Business Development Manager Resume Example

A business development manager is hired to open doors that the sales team then walks through. Your resume has to show new markets, partners and pipeline you created, not just deals you closed from inbound leads.

The Sample resume below is for a business development manager with seven years in B2B software and staffing. Each bullet ties an initiative to something a revenue leader can count: partner-sourced pipeline, new logos in a segment the company had never sold to, contract value from a channel agreement, or the time it took a new partner to produce its first deal. Notice that the bullets also say who else was involved, because business development work depends on product, legal and sales colleagues.

Business development titles vary widely, so read each posting for its center of gravity. Some roles are partnerships, some are outbound prospecting, some are market entry. Lead with the matching kind of work. If the posting reads more like closing than opening, the account executive example fits better, and the Sales hub collects the rest of the revenue roles.

How the resume changes with experience

The same business development manager resume, written at three levels: a summary and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first role in the title

Business development representative with a year and a half of outbound prospecting and a record of booking meetings with senior buyers.

  • Booked 140 first meetings with directors and vice presidents in a year of outbound work.
  • Built target account lists for two new regions from public data and trade association directories.
  • Wrote the email sequence the team adopted after it doubled reply rates in a two-month test.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Business development manager with five years of experience owning a partner channel or a new segment, from the first meeting to a signed agreement.

  • Own eight referral partnerships and the quarterly pipeline they produce.
  • Signed the company's first customers in a new vertical after building the target list and the pitch.
  • Coordinate product, legal and finance on partner terms and joint offers.

Senior

Director of business development with twelve years of experience building channels, leading market entry and running a team of partner managers.

  • Lead a team of five partner managers responsible for most of the company's new logo pipeline.
  • Set the partner strategy and tiering that the executive team adopted as part of the three-year plan.
  • Negotiated the company's largest strategic alliance, including integration commitments and revenue share.

Skills to put on the business development manager resume

Hard skills

Partner and channel development
Many business development roles are measured on partner-sourced revenue, so show partners recruited, activated and producing.
Prospecting and qualification
Hiring managers want proof you can create meetings with the right buyers, not only follow up on inbound interest.
Market research and sizing
Entering a new segment starts with knowing who to call, and a clear method makes your wins repeatable.
Negotiation and deal structure
Referral fees, revenue share and exclusivity terms separate business development from pure selling.
CRM discipline
Leaders trust forecasts from people who keep the CRM accurate, and they ask which system you used.
Pipeline and revenue metrics
Sourced pipeline, conversion and time to first deal are the numbers you will be asked to defend in interviews.

Soft skills

Relationship building
Partnerships last years, and interviewers look for relationships you kept alive long after the first signature.
Internal influence
Deals need product, legal and finance to say yes, so show that you can bring them along.
Persistence with judgment
Business development involves many no answers, and good candidates also know when to stop pursuing a bad fit.

Mistakes that cost business development manager interviews

  1. Claiming closed revenue you only sourced

Be exact about your part. Sourced $3 million in pipeline, of which $1.2 million closed is believable; closed $3 million when the account team closed it will unravel in the reference check.

  2. No sense of what was new

Business development is about creating something that did not exist: a partner, a segment, a region. Say what was there before you and what was there after.

  3. Only activity numbers

Calls and emails show effort, not results. Keep one activity figure at most, then move to meetings, pipeline and signed agreements.

  4. Ignoring the posting's definition of the role

A partnerships role and an outbound prospecting role share a title and little else. Reorder your bullets for the one you are applying to.

Questions about the business development manager resume

What is the difference between business development and sales on a resume?

Sales bullets center on quota and closed deals. Business development bullets center on new partners, new markets and pipeline created for others, with closed revenue where you owned it.

Should I list quota attainment as a business development manager?

Yes, if you carried a quota. If you were measured on sourced pipeline or partner revenue instead, list that target and how you performed against it.

How do I show partnerships without naming confidential partners?

Describe the partner type and size, such as a regional payroll software vendor with 4,000 customers, and give the terms and results in general figures.

Is an MBA necessary for business development roles?

Rarely. Most hiring managers weigh a track record of opening markets or channels far above a degree, though strategic alliance roles at large companies sometimes prefer one.

Which resume template works for a business development manager?

A clean single-column layout that recruiters and tracking systems read easily, with a short skills section. The Professional category suits most revenue roles.
