Sales Manager Resume Example

A sales manager's resume is judged on two numbers: what the team sold against its target, and how the people on it grew. Hiring leaders want to see the team size and territory, attainment over several periods rather than one good quarter, and the coaching or process changes that made the result repeatable.

The Sample resume below is for a sales manager with eight years in building products and medical supplies, the last four leading a regional team. It opens with the team and the target, shows attainment by year, and gives specific examples of hiring, coaching and pipeline discipline, which is what a vice president of sales will ask about.

Tailor it to the sales motion in the posting. Field sales roles want territory, travel and relationship depth; inside sales roles want activity, conversion and speed; channel roles want partners and enablement. Name the CRM and the method your team used. If you still carry an individual quota, the account manager example shows how to present a personal book of business.

How the resume changes with experience

The same sales manager resume, written at three levels: a summary and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first role in the title

Top-performing sales representative with four years of quota success, now leading a pod of three newer reps as a team lead. Ready to manage a full team.

  • Reached quota in fourteen of the last sixteen quarters.
  • Lead weekly call reviews for three newer representatives.
  • Built a prospecting playbook the team still uses.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Sales manager with five years of experience leading an inside sales team for a software company, focused on conversion and ramp time.

  • Lead eight inside sales representatives with a combined $6M target.
  • Shortened ramp time for new reps with a structured onboarding program.
  • Improved demo-to-close conversion by coaching on discovery calls.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programs

Director of sales with fifteen years of experience building and leading multi-region sales organizations and delivering sustained growth.

  • Lead four regional managers and 40 representatives with a $120M target.
  • Designed the sales compensation plan and territory model for the national team.
  • Grew revenue in each of the last five years, including during a market downturn.

Skills to put on the sales manager resume

Hard skills

Quota and target management
Attainment over several periods is the first thing a sales leader checks.
Pipeline and forecast discipline
Accurate forecasts let the business plan, and managers who deliver them are trusted with more.
Hiring and onboarding
A sales manager's results depend on the team, so hiring well is a core skill.
Coaching
Improving existing reps is the fastest way to raise team results, and hiring managers look for examples.
CRM administration and reporting
Postings name the CRM, and managers who use it well run better teams.
Territory planning
How accounts are divided affects both fairness and results, and good planning shows strategic thinking.

Soft skills

Motivation
Sales teams face rejection daily, and managers who keep morale steady keep results steady.
Accountability
Holding people to standards fairly is what makes a team's results repeatable.
Credibility with customers
Managers who can help close a key deal earn respect from both their team and their clients.

Mistakes that cost sales manager interviews

  1. Only one good year

A single strong year could be luck. Show attainment across several years or quarters so the pattern is visible.

  2. Team results without team size

Say how many people you lead, their territory and the combined target. Without them, the percentages have no scale.

  3. Leaving out people development

Promotions, reps who reached quota after coaching and low turnover are evidence of management skill. Include them.

  4. Using your personal best as a manager's story

As a manager, lead with the team's results. Keep your own individual records in the earlier roles where they belong.

  5. Generic sales language

Terms like results-driven closer say little. Replace them with the numbers and a specific example of how you coach or run the pipeline.

Questions about the sales manager resume

What should a sales manager resume include?

Team size, territory, target and attainment over several periods, plus hiring, coaching and process improvements. Add the CRM and sales method your team uses.

How do I show attainment on a sales resume?

Use percentage of target by year or quarter, and give the target itself. Consistency over time is more persuasive than one record year.

How do I move from sales rep to sales manager?

Show leadership you already have: mentoring new reps, leading call reviews, running a team meeting or owning a playbook. Present your consistent quota results as the base.

Should a sales manager resume mention compensation plans?

Only if you designed or changed them. Mention the goal of the change and its effect on results or retention.

How long should a sales manager resume be?

One page for first-time managers and up to two pages for experienced leaders. Keep the current role's numbers on the first page.

Every application goes out fitting the job.
