Data Analyst Intern Resume Example

A data analyst intern resume is proven by the questions you have answered with data, not by the tools you list. Each project bullet should name the dataset, the size, the tools, and the decision someone made because of your analysis. SQL, Excel and one visualization tool are the baseline; a dashboard someone actually uses is the differentiator.

The Sample resume below is for a third-year economics student in Kansas City with a data analytics minor, a summer internship at a credit union, a paid analyst seat in his university's institutional research office, and a capstone project for a logistics client. The bullets carry row counts, query speeds, hours saved and the business change that followed. His skills list separates what he does weekly from what he has used once.

If you are earlier in the degree with only class projects, start with the internship example, then build one public project with a real dataset before applying. The roles this internship leads to are on the data analyst example and the data scientist example, and students on a software path should compare the software engineering intern example. The Campus template fits a projects-plus-education page, and the student resume builder can hold a separate version for finance and healthcare analytics postings.

Economics Major, Data Analytics Minor (BS, Dec 2027) | SQL, Python, Tableau, Excel | Credit Union Analytics Internship

Kansas City, MOelijah.mabry@example.com(816) 555-0138

Summary

Third-year economics major with a data analytics minor at Westport State University (BS expected December 2027, GPA 3.7) seeking a summer 2027 data analyst internship. Completed a ten-week analytics internship at a credit union, where a churn analysis of 85,000 members led to a retention campaign now in its second quarter. Works ten hours a week as a student analyst in the university's institutional research office, maintaining enrollment dashboards in Tableau that 60 staff members use.

Experience

Data Analyst Intern, Plaza District Credit Union

–

Kansas City, MO

  • Analyzed account closures across 85,000 members using SQL on the data warehouse and Python, and identified that members with a single product and no direct deposit closed at three times the rate of others.
  • Built the segmentation the marketing team used for a direct deposit retention campaign; the first quarter's closures in the target segment fell by about a fifth against the prior year.
  • Rewrote a weekly branch performance report from a four-hour manual Excel process into a Tableau dashboard refreshed automatically from the warehouse.
  • Documented 30 warehouse tables in a shared data dictionary that the two-person analytics team had never had time to write.
Student Data Analyst, Westport State University Office of Institutional Research

– Present

Kansas City, MO

  • Maintain enrollment, retention and course demand dashboards in Tableau used by about 60 deans, advisors and registrar staff, refreshing them from the student information system each term.
  • Wrote SQL queries against the student data mart to answer about 15 ad hoc requests a month from academic departments, with each query saved and documented for reuse.
  • Found and corrected a join error in a legacy retention report that had overstated first-year retention by two points for three years.
  • Cleaned and merged five years of course evaluation exports in Python for a faculty committee's review of class size effects.
Capstone Analyst (class client project), Heartland Parcel Analytics

–

Kansas City, MO

  • Led a three-student team analyzing 1.4 million delivery scan records for a regional parcel carrier to find the causes of late deliveries, presenting to the client's operations director.
  • Showed that two of 18 routes accounted for a third of late scans, and recommended a route split the client tested the following month.

Education

Bachelor of Science in Economics, Minor in Data Analytics (expected December 2027)

Westport State University, Kansas City, MO

How the resume changes with experience

The same data analyst intern resume, written at three levels: a summary and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first role in the title

Second-year economics student with SQL and Excel coursework and one public project analyzing city open data, seeking a first data analyst internship or a campus analyst position.

  • Analyzed three years of a city's 311 service requests (400,000 rows) in SQL and Excel to show response time by neighborhood, published with code and charts.
  • Completed Database Systems and Statistical Programming with a group project that cleaned and modeled a public health dataset.
  • Picked a messy real dataset for the personal project instead of a clean teaching dataset, so the cleaning steps had something to show.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Third-year economics and data analytics student with a credit union analytics internship, a paid institutional research analyst role and a capstone client project, recruiting for a second data analyst internship.

  • Churn analysis of 85,000 members shaped a retention campaign that cut closures in the target segment by about a fifth.
  • Replaced a four-hour weekly manual report with an automated Tableau dashboard.
  • Reported a legacy join error that had flattered a university retention number for three years, rather than leaving the report as it was.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programs

Graduating economics major with two data analytics internships and a published capstone, seeking a full-time data analyst or business intelligence analyst role.

  • Second internship owned the pricing analytics for a regional retailer's 40 stores, building the weekly margin dashboard the category managers now run their Monday meeting from.
  • Designed and read out an A/B test of two promotion structures across 20 store pairs, with the winning structure rolled out chain-wide.
  • Pushed back on a request to report a result before the test reached its sample size, and the manager agreed to wait a week.

Skills to put on the data analyst intern resume

Hard skills

SQL beyond SELECT
Joins, window functions and CTEs are what the technical screen tests, and a bullet with a corrected join error or a saved query library shows you use them.
Excel at an advanced level
Most business teams still live in spreadsheets, and pivot tables and Power Query are what an intern is handed on day one.
A visualization tool with a certification
Tableau or Power BI dashboards that other people use are the clearest proof of value, and the specialist exam is cheap and verifiable.
Python or R for cleaning and analysis
Merging five years of exports or modeling churn needs more than a spreadsheet, and naming the libraries shows you have done it.
Statistics you can explain
Regression, cohorts and test design are the difference between a report and an analysis, and econometrics or applied statistics courses back it up.
Data documentation
A data dictionary or a documented query library is work every team needs and almost no intern volunteers for, so it stands out.
A public project with real data
A repository with a messy dataset, cleaning steps and charts lets a hiring manager see how you think before the interview.

Soft skills

Turning a vague question into a query
Stakeholders ask why are members leaving, and the intern who can translate that into a defined analysis gets the interesting work.
Presenting to non-technical people
A finding only matters if the operations director acts on it, and a bullet about a presentation and the decision shows you can close that loop.
Honesty about data quality
Reporting an error that made a number look better takes judgment, and managers remember the analyst who did it.
Patience with cleaning
Most of the job is preparing data, and an intern who writes about cleaning steps without complaint has realistic expectations.

Mistakes that cost data analyst intern interviews

  1. Tools listed, questions missing

SQL, Python, Tableau, Excel in a skills box is table stakes. For each tool, make sure a bullet shows a question you answered with it and what the reader did with the answer.

  2. No row counts or sizes

Analyzed customer data could be ten rows or ten million. Give the size of the dataset, the number of tables, the number of users of a dashboard, so the scope is clear.

  3. Claiming machine learning from one assignment

A logistic regression homework is not experience with machine learning. List modeling as a course and describe real analyses honestly; most intern work is descriptive and that is fine.

  4. Leaving out the campus analyst job

Institutional research, admissions and athletics offices employ student analysts, and that work is real reporting with real users. Give it an entry with the dashboards, the request volume and any error you caught.

  5. A class project described as a class

Completed a capstone in data analytics says nothing. Name the client or dataset, the size, the method, and the recommendation, as the Sample does.

  6. Charts described but not linked

If your dashboard or project is public, link it. If it is confidential, describe what it showed and who used it. A screenshot portfolio page is an easy middle ground.

Questions about the data analyst intern resume

What skills does a data analyst intern need on a resume?

SQL with joins and aggregations, Excel with pivot tables and lookups, one visualization tool, and Python or R for cleaning and analysis. Add statistics coursework and a project where each tool answered a real question. A Tableau or Power BI certification is a useful tiebreaker.

How do I get a data analyst internship with no experience?

Build one project on a real public dataset, such as city open data, with a documented repository and two or three charts. Apply for a campus analyst job in institutional research, admissions or athletics. Those two lines, plus coursework, make a credible first resume.

Should I list Excel on a data analyst resume?

Yes, with specifics. Pivot tables, Power Query, INDEX/MATCH or XLOOKUP, and data validation tell the reader your level. Most analytics teams hand interns spreadsheets before anything else.

Do I need Python or R for a data analyst internship?

Not for every posting, but one of them opens more doors and lets you handle datasets too large for Excel. List the one you actually use with the libraries, and leave off the other if you have only seen it in a lecture.

How do I describe a class project with a real client?

As an experience entry labeled as a class client project: the client type, the dataset size, your role on the team, the method and the recommendation. State the outcome if you know it, such as a test the client ran.

Should a data analyst intern resume be one page?

One page. An internship, a campus job, a project and education with courses fit if each has three or four bullets. Put the GitHub or portfolio link in the header to carry the detail that does not fit.

Every application goes out fitting the job.
