Finance Intern Resume Example

A finance intern resume is read in about thirty seconds by an analyst who went through the same process two years ago. It must show a GPA at or above the cutoff, modeling skills proven in a fund or a competition, and bullets that name the transaction, the model or the memo rather than the department you sat in.

The Sample resume below is for a third-year finance major in Indianapolis recruiting for summer analyst roles in corporate finance and commercial banking. He has a credit internship at a community bank, an equity analyst seat in his school's student-managed fund, and a one-week externship at a small investment firm. Every entry says what he analyzed, with the dollar sizes, and the certifications section holds the Bloomberg and Excel credentials recruiters check for.

Banking and corporate finance timelines run early: investment banks recruit sophomores in the spring for internships eighteen months out, while corporate programs post in the fall. If you have no finance experience yet, the internship example covers a first application. The jobs this internship leads to are described on the financial analyst example and the accountant example. The Campus template keeps the one-page conservative format that finance expects.

How the resume changes with experience

The same finance intern resume, written at three levels: a summary and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first role in the title

Second-year finance major with a 3.7 GPA and no finance internship yet, applying for a sophomore summer program or a local firm's internship on the strength of coursework, a case competition and a bank teller job.

  • Placed third of 18 teams in a university case competition valuing a regional grocery chain, building the model and presenting the valuation range.
  • Worked 15 hours a week as a bank teller handling $20,000 to $40,000 in daily transactions with a balanced drawer.
  • Joined the student investment fund as a junior analyst in the second semester instead of waiting for junior year, when most members apply.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Third-year finance major with a credit analysis internship, an equity analyst seat in a student-managed fund and a Bloomberg certification, recruiting for summer analyst roles in corporate finance and banking.

  • Underwrote 14 commercial loan requests totaling $9 million and presented two to loan committee.
  • Built a spreading template that cut analysis time from four hours to ninety minutes per borrower.
  • Pitched a freight company position the fund adopted, and it has returned 17 percent.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programs

Graduating finance major with a completed summer analyst internship and a return offer, deciding between the offer and full-time analyst roles at other firms.

  • Supported three live transactions as a summer analyst, including a $140 million acquisition where I owned the comparable companies analysis and the merger model's synergy cases.
  • Rebuilt the group's template for weekly market update slides, saving the first-year analysts about two hours each Monday.
  • Declined the return offer's first deadline to finish interviews elsewhere, then accepted with a start date that allowed a CFA Level I sitting.

Skills to put on the finance intern resume

Hard skills

Financial modeling in Excel
Every summer analyst role tests modeling, and a fund or internship bullet that names the model type proves the coursework stuck.
Valuation methods
DCF, comparables and precedent transactions are the interview questions, and showing you used them on a real pitch gives you a story to tell.
Credit analysis
Commercial banking and corporate finance programs want students who can read a borrower's statements and write a memo, and loan counts with dollar sizes show you have.
Bloomberg or Capital IQ
Recruiters check whether you can pull data without help, and the Bloomberg Market Concepts certificate is a free, verifiable answer.
Accounting coursework
Intermediate Accounting is where the three statements start to connect, and listing it reassures the interviewer before the first technical question.
Written memos and pitch books
Analysts write all day, and a 20-page report or a credit memo is evidence you can structure an argument with numbers.
GPA and test dates
Many programs filter at 3.5, and a scheduled CFA Level I or passed exam signals seriousness about the career.

Soft skills

Attention to detail
A caught inconsistency in a borrower's statements, as in the Sample, is worth more than the word detail-oriented ever will be.
Presenting to a committee
Pitching to a fund or a loan committee shows you can defend a number under questioning, which is the daily work of an analyst.
Stamina for long weeks
Firms want to know you can handle the hours, and a full course load plus a fund seat plus a job says it without complaint.
Discretion with confidential information
Interns see deal and borrower data, and a bank or fund role shows you have already been trusted with it.

Mistakes that cost finance intern interviews

  1. Bullets about the team instead of the analysis

Assisted the credit team with loan requests says you were present. Say how many requests, how large, what you built or wrote, and what the committee did with it.

  2. Leaving the GPA off when it clears the cutoff

Finance recruiters sort on GPA. If yours is 3.5 or above, put it in the headline and the education entry. If it is below, lead with the fund or internship results and be ready to explain in interviews.

  3. Dressing up a club as a fund

If the investment club manages no real money, say so honestly and describe the research. Recruiters know which schools have student-managed funds, and an inflated claim ends an interview.

  4. Modeling skills with no evidence

Proficient in financial modeling means nothing until a bullet names a DCF, a merger model or a sensitivity table you built and what it was used for. Add a modeling course, competition or certification if you have no work example yet.

  5. A second page

Finance resumes are one page through the first several years of a career. Cut high school, generic coursework and the hobby line before anything with a dollar figure.

  6. Missing the recruiting calendar

Investment banks interview sophomores in the spring for the following summer; corporate finance and commercial banking post in the fall. A resume finished in January is a semester late for the first and on time for only part of the second.

Questions about the finance intern resume

What GPA do I need for a finance internship?

Most large banks and corporate programs screen at 3.5, and some at 3.3. Smaller firms, community banks and regional companies are more flexible and weigh the student fund, competitions and work experience more heavily. Apply widely either way.

How do I get a finance internship with no experience?

Join the student investment fund or finance club in your first or second year, enter a case or stock pitch competition, finish Bloomberg Market Concepts, and take a bank teller or bookkeeping job. Those four lines make a credible sophomore resume.

Should I list the CFA on my resume before passing?

List a scheduled exam as CFA Level I candidate with the sitting month. Do not list it if you have not registered. Once passed, write Passed CFA Level I with the date.

Is a student investment fund experience or an activity?

Experience, if the fund manages real money and you held a defined role. List it under experience with the fund size, your sector, the positions you pitched and their outcomes. A club without assets belongs under activities.

Do I need a cover letter for a summer analyst role?

Banks rarely read them; corporate finance rotational programs sometimes require one. When asked, keep it to three paragraphs with one specific reason for that firm and one result from your resume, and never repeat the resume line by line.

How should I describe an externship or shadow week?

As a short entry with the firm type, the dates, and what you produced: a rebuilt model, a case presentation, meeting summaries. Be clear it was a one-week program so it is not mistaken for a full internship.

Every application goes out fitting the job.
