Graphic Design Student Resume Example

A graphic design student resume is itself a design sample, and creative directors judge it that way: typography, hierarchy, spacing and restraint before a single word is read. Then they read for the Adobe tools, real client work and a portfolio link that opens to six strong pieces.

The Sample resume below belongs to a junior in Sacramento who is art director of the campus magazine, interned at a print and design shop and has run a small freelance practice since high school. Each entry names the deliverable and what it did: a cover series, a packaging line that shipped, a brand system a client still uses.

Design hiring is portfolio-first, so keep the resume to one page, set it in the same type system as the portfolio and make sure the two look like they came from the same person. For the roles this leads to, read the graphic designer example, the illustrator example, the art director example and the UX designer example. Rules every student page shares are on the business student example.

Experience

Art Director, The Capitol Current, student magazine of Sierra Delta State University

– Present

Sacramento, CA

  • Direct the design of a 48-page quarterly magazine with a 3,000-copy print run and a web edition, leading four student designers and two photographers through concept, layout and press check for each issue.
  • Redesigned the magazine's type system and grid for the fall 2025 issue, cutting layout time per issue from about three weeks to two and earning a regional collegiate press design award.
  • Art-direct the cover series, including a commissioned illustration for each issue and a typographic cover that the editorial board chose over three photographic options.
  • Run the print handoff with a local press, including preflight in InDesign and Acrobat; the last three issues printed without a reprinted signature.
Design Intern, Midtown Print and Design Co.

–

Sacramento, CA

  • Designed menus, signage, packaging labels and social graphics for about 25 small-business clients, taking jobs from brief to print-ready file in Illustrator and InDesign with a two-day average turnaround.
  • Designed a three-flavor label line for a local hot sauce maker that shipped to 40 stores; the client reordered the full run in September.
  • Prepared files for digital and offset presses, including dielines, bleeds and spot colors, and caught a Pantone mismatch on a 5,000-piece brochure job before it ran.
  • Built a template library in InDesign for the shop's five most common jobs, which the owner now uses for first drafts.
Freelance Graphic Designer, Self-employed

– Present

Sacramento, CA

  • Completed brand identity, poster and social work for 14 clients, mostly local restaurants, musicians and nonprofits, with about $9,000 in revenue since 2022 and five repeat clients.

How the resume changes with experience

The same graphic design student resume, written at three levels: a summary and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first role in the title

First-year graphic design student with a high school portfolio of posters and a yearbook design editor role, two paying freelance clients and the first typography course under way, applying for a student designer position in the campus communications office.

  • Designed the layout and cover of a 220-page high school yearbook as design editor, managing a team of three on InDesign.
  • Took two paid poster jobs for local bands in senior year and used them to learn print specs from the shop that ran them.
  • Applied for the campus communications job in the first month because student designer roles there turn over only once a year.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Junior graphic design student directing a 48-page campus magazine, with a print and design shop internship and 14 freelance clients behind her, applying for summer 2026 design internships in editorial and brand work.

  • Lead four designers and two photographers through each quarterly issue of a 3,000-copy magazine and run the press handoff.
  • A three-flavor label line designed during the internship shipped to 40 stores and was reordered.
  • Turned down a social-only internship for the print shop because I wanted production experience that studios cannot teach quickly.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programs

Graduating BFA designer with two internships, two years as a magazine art director and a senior thesis identity system shown in the juried exhibition, seeking a full-time junior designer role at a studio or in-house brand team starting June 2027.

  • Second internship on an in-house brand team covered a packaging refresh across 30 SKUs and the brand guidelines document that went to three outside agencies.
  • Senior thesis built an identity and wayfinding system for a regional transit line, selected for the juried exhibition and presented to the agency's communications staff.
  • Chose a studio offer with a lower salary over an agency's because the studio's work was the kind I had been building a portfolio toward.

Skills to put on the graphic design student resume

Hard skills

Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop
They are the baseline for every design internship, and listing what you produced in each is what separates students who have them from students who have used them.
Typography
Creative directors judge a student's type on the resume itself before opening the portfolio.
Figma
In-house and agency teams expect a junior to move between print and interface work, and Figma is the interface tool they hire for.
Print production
Preflight, dielines and press checks are rare among students and valuable to studios and shops that print.
Brand identity work
A complete system for a real client, even a small one, is the portfolio piece most hiring managers ask about first.
Motion basics
A short After Effects piece shows range, and brand teams need someone who can animate a logo for social.
Client process
Briefs, contracts and review rounds show you can manage a client, which a freelance history proves better than a course.

Soft skills

Taking critique
Studio and agency work is rounds of feedback, and students who have run a magazine or a client job have practiced hearing it.
Leading other creatives
Art-directing peers and photographers on a deadline is management experience most students do not have.
Deadline discipline
Press dates do not move, and three issues without a reprint is a reliability record.
Clear communication with non-designers
Restaurant owners and editors do not speak in grids, and a designer who can explain a choice gets the approval.

Mistakes that cost graphic design student interviews

  1. An over-designed resume

Colored sidebars, skill bars and icons read as a template, not as design judgment. Set the page in one or two typefaces, with a clear hierarchy and generous margins, and let the portfolio carry the color. Save the file as a PDF and name it with your name.

  2. Skill bars for software

A bar that says Illustrator at four fifths tells a creative director nothing and looks like every other student resume. Name the tools and say what you made with them.

  3. Freelance written as a hobby

Paying clients make it a business. Write it with a start date, a client count, a revenue figure if it is meaningful, repeat clients and one project described in full. Say self-employed, not various clients.

  4. A portfolio link to everything

Six to ten pieces, strongest first, each with a sentence on the brief and the result. Reviewers stop at the first weak piece, so cut class exercises that do not look like client work.

  5. Leaving off the production work

Preflighting files, catching a Pantone mismatch and running a press check are the skills that make a junior useful on day one. Keep them on the page even if the design work seems more impressive.

  6. Forgetting the campus publication

Designing for a magazine, newspaper or yearbook is editorial design with deadlines and a print run. Give it a title, the size and the run, and write the redesign or the award as a bullet.

Questions about the graphic design student resume

Should a graphic design student's resume be designed or plain?

Designed with restraint. Hiring managers expect typographic care: a clear hierarchy, consistent spacing, one or two typefaces and alignment that matches the portfolio. They do not expect color blocks or illustrations. For applicant systems, keep a plain-text version as well, since decorative layouts can parse badly.

How many pieces should a student design portfolio have?

Six to ten, the strongest first, with a short description of the brief, your role and the outcome for each. Include at least one complete system (a brand identity or an editorial issue) and one piece of production work. A student show selection or an award belongs in the description.

Does freelance design work count as experience?

Yes, and it is often the best experience a student has because it includes clients, briefs, money and revisions. Write it as a role with dates, the client count and one project described in detail, and keep the contract and brief habit as a bullet, since studios value it.

Should I learn Figma or focus on the Adobe apps?

Both. Adobe tools are the baseline for print and brand work, and Figma is the standard for interface and many brand systems. One Interaction Design course and one Figma project on the portfolio is enough for a print-focused student to be considered for in-house roles.

Is a GPA relevant for a design internship?

Rarely. Include it at 3.5 or above or when an application form asks, and give more space to juried shows, awards and the portfolio. Design hiring decisions are made on the work.

What should the headline say on a graphic design student resume?

Your degree and class year, your strongest role and the portfolio link, in one line. The portfolio link is the most important element on the resume, so it belongs at the top where it cannot be missed, and again in the contact line of your email.
