Household Manager Resume Example

A household manager resume is read by a principal, a family office or a private staffing agency, and they are checking for three things: that you can run a home like a small business, that you can lead staff and vendors, and that you can be trusted with everything you will see. Lead with the size of the household, the properties and the staff you oversee, then the budgets, projects and routines you own.

The Sample resume below belongs to a household manager with seven years in private service, now running a family's primary residence in Westport and a summer house on the coast of Maine. Her bullets cover a household budget, a staff of six, a renovation run to schedule, a vendor bench rebuilt after a theft, travel and calendars for a family of five, and a home inventory documented for insurance. Discretion is shown, not claimed: the employer is described rather than named, and nothing personal about the family appears.

If most of your work is calendars and errands for one person, the personal assistant example is closer; corporate support belongs on the executive assistant example, and childcare-led roles on the nanny example. The Brief template suits a quiet, tidy page that private employers prefer.

How the resume changes with experience

The same household manager resume, written at three levels: a summary and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first role in the title

Personal and family assistant moving into household management, with two years supporting a busy family and a background in hotel guest services.

  • Coordinate a family of four's calendars, school logistics and appointments across two working parents.
  • Took over vendor scheduling for cleaning, pool and lawn care and cut missed visits to none in a year.
  • Raised a concern about an unlicensed electrician with the family before work started, and found a licensed replacement within a week.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Household manager with five years running a single private residence, its staff of three and a six-figure household budget.

  • Manage housekeeping, a part-time chef and grounds staff for a large family home.
  • Built a preventive maintenance calendar that ended emergency call-outs for the heating system and well pump.
  • Planned and ran a family wedding at the residence for 180 guests.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programs

Estate manager with fourteen years in private service, responsible for four properties in two countries, 22 staff and a multimillion-dollar operating and capital budget.

  • Lead property managers and staff at four residences, reporting to the family office.
  • Ran a two-year restoration of a historic property with architects, conservators and the local planning board.
  • Wrote the estate's staff handbook, security protocols and emergency plans.

Skills to put on the household manager resume

Hard skills

Household budgeting
Principals and family offices want to know the money is watched, and a reconciled budget is the clearest proof you run the home like a business.
Staff supervision
Most household manager roles include housekeepers, chefs, drivers or grounds staff, and hiring and scheduling them well is central to the job.
Vendor and contractor management
Homes this size depend on dozens of outside trades, and a reliable vetted bench protects both the property and the family's privacy.
Renovation oversight
Projects inside an occupied home need someone who can manage contractors, schedules and disruption, and a finished project is strong evidence.
Inventory and insurance documentation
Art, wine, jewelry and furnishings need records that hold up to an insurer, which matters most on the day something goes wrong.
Security and access control
Keys, alarm codes and staff access are the household manager's responsibility, and a clear system reassures any principal.
Bookkeeping software
Many families expect bills paid and recorded in QuickBooks or a similar tool that the family office can audit.

Soft skills

Discretion
You will see finances, health and family matters, and the resume itself must show you keep them private.
Anticipation
The best household managers fix the problem before the family notices it, and principals hire for that instinct.
Calm under pressure
A burst pipe during a dinner party or a flight cancelled abroad is a normal week, and employers want someone who stays composed.
Service mindset with authority
You serve the family and direct the staff at once, and a resume that shows both earns trust with agencies.

Mistakes that cost household manager interviews

  1. Naming the family

Writing a principal's name, or details that identify them, tells a future employer you will talk about them too. Describe the employer as a private residence and give the scale, not the identity.

  2. Listing chores instead of scope

Errands, laundry and grocery runs undersell the role. State the size of the property, the number of staff and the budget you manage, then the projects and systems you built.

  3. No numbers at all

Private service still has measurable results: costs cut on contracts, renovations finished on schedule, events run, staff hired and retained. Use them, even if you round.

  4. Hiding the hospitality background

Hotel, yacht, club or concierge experience is directly relevant and many household managers come from it. Keep it on the page and connect it to service standards.

  5. Skipping references strategy

Private employers rely heavily on references. Note that references are available from previous principals and make sure each one has agreed in advance.

  6. One resume for every agency

Private staffing agencies place for estates, family offices, yachts and single homes, and each wants a different emphasis. Keep a version that leads with property and projects, and another that leads with family logistics and childcare coordination, then send the one that matches the placement.

Write bullets with the XYZ formula: what changed, the number that shows it, and how you did it, in one line.

Questions about the household manager resume

How is a household manager different from a personal assistant?

A household manager runs the home: staff, vendors, the property, the budget and the calendar around it. A personal assistant supports one person's schedule and errands. If you supervise staff or manage the property, use the household manager title.

How do I list a private family as my employer?

Use a neutral description such as Private Family Residence or Private Estate, add the town and keep identifying details out. Agencies and principals expect this and read it as professionalism.

Do household managers need a certification?

None is required. First aid and CPR are common and useful, and a household management or estate management course helps if you are moving in from another field.

What should I put first on a household manager resume?

A headline with the number and type of properties, then a summary giving staff size and budget. Those details let an agency match you to the right placement quickly.

Should a household manager mention an NDA?

A short line saying you work under a nondisclosure agreement is fine and signals trust. Never describe what the agreement covers.

How do I show results in a job that is mostly invisible?

Count what you prevented and what you finished: maintenance problems caught early, contracts renegotiated, events run without a hitch, staff retained, projects closed on budget. A principal notices a calm household, and the resume has to put numbers on that calm.

Every application goes out fitting the job.
