International Student Resume Example

An international student resume for the US job market follows US conventions: no photo, no date of birth, no nationality, no marital status, and one page. The work authorization question gets answered in one factual line, so the recruiter does not have to guess or ask.

The Sample below is a master's student in computer engineering from Brazil, studying in Syracuse on an F-1 visa, who completed a CPT internship at a software company and is applying for full-time roles that would start on OPT after her December 2026 graduation. Her authorization line states what she has and for how long; her education section carries both the US degree and the Brazilian one, with the degree names as they translate.

Most of the advice on this page is about format, because the content rules are the ones every student follows: see the graduate student example for research and teaching work, the internship example for a first CPT application, and the computer science example for how project bullets are written in US tech hiring. The Campus template keeps the page to US letter size with education on top.

Syracuse, NYrafaela.castanheira@example.com(315) 555-0126

Summary

Master's student in computer engineering graduating in December 2026, with a CPT internship writing firmware for industrial sensors and a bachelor's in electrical engineering from Brazil. Eligible for 12 months of OPT from January 2027 plus a 24-month STEM extension; will require sponsorship after that. Seeking an embedded software engineer role.

Experience

Embedded Software Intern (CPT), Erie Canal Software

–

Syracuse, NY

  • Wrote C firmware for an ARM Cortex-M4 vibration sensor that cut wake-to-sample time from 180 to 95 milliseconds and extended estimated battery life by about four months.
  • Added unit tests with a hardware-in-the-loop rig that caught two regressions before release; coverage on the sensor module went from 0 to 70 percent.
  • Presented the work at the company's engineering demo day and received a return-offer conversation for a full-time role.
Graduate Research Assistant, Embedded Systems Lab, Onondaga Lake Institute of Technology

– Present

Syracuse, NY

  • Implemented a low-power scheduling algorithm on a RISC-V development board and measured a 22 percent energy reduction against the baseline scheduler across six benchmarks.
  • Maintain the lab's continuous integration pipeline for firmware builds, used by seven graduate students.
  • Co-authored a workshop paper on the scheduler, accepted for a fall 2026 embedded systems workshop.
Peer Advisor, International Student Office, Onondaga Lake Institute of Technology

–

Syracuse, NY

  • Led orientation sessions for about 90 new international students a semester on CPT and OPT rules, Social Security applications and US resume format.
  • Answered walk-in questions ten hours a week and wrote a two-page checklist that the office now hands to every new F-1 student.

How the resume changes with experience

The same international student resume, written at three levels: a summary and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first role in the title

First-semester international master's student, two months in the US, with a foreign engineering bachelor's and no US work history, applying for a first summer CPT internship.

  • Five-year electrical engineering degree with a hardware final project for a municipal client.
  • Rewrote the resume to US format in the first month: one page, no photo, authorization line added.
  • Joined the embedded systems lab in September so the spring internship applications would show US research.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Final-year international master's student with a completed CPT internship, a workshop paper and OPT eligibility from January, applying for full-time embedded roles.

  • Firmware shipped in a product during the internship, with battery life extended by months.
  • Workshop paper and a lab CI pipeline seven students depend on.
  • Applies only to companies whose postings do not exclude future sponsorship, saving time for both sides.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programs

Master's graduate eight months into a first full-time embedded software role on OPT, with a STEM extension filed and an employer that has agreed to sponsor.

  • Owns firmware for two sensor products and the release process for both.
  • STEM OPT extension approved, giving three years of authorization in total.
  • Raised sponsorship in the first interview so neither side spent months before learning the answer.

Skills to put on the international student resume

Hard skills

Work authorization stated plainly
Recruiters cannot act on a resume that leaves them guessing; one line with the visa, OPT dates and the sponsorship need answers it.
US degree with expected graduation
It anchors your OPT start date and shows the recruiter you are in the same cycle as domestic students.
Foreign degree with a translated name
Give the US equivalent and the original in parentheses so the credential is understood in one read.
CPT internship in the US
It is proof you have already worked under US rules and in a US team, the main doubt a recruiter has.
Technical skills by tool
US screening is keyword driven; the exact languages, boards and frameworks from the posting need to appear.
English proficiency evidence
A TOEFL or IELTS score, a US degree taught in English or a US internship settles the question without a line claiming fluency.
Languages as an asset
Portuguese, Mandarin or Hindi is a skill for companies with teams or customers abroad; list them with a level.

Soft skills

Adapting to new conventions
A resume already in US format proves you learned the rules of the market before asking it to hire you.
Clear written communication
Every bullet is a writing sample in your second or third language, and recruiters notice when it reads cleanly.
Helping others navigate
A peer advisor or orientation role shows you understand the process well enough to teach it.
Directness
Raising sponsorship early is uncomfortable, and doing it anyway signals the kind of candor teams want.

Mistakes that cost international student interviews

  1. A photo, a birth date or a nationality line

Common on resumes in Europe, Asia and Latin America, these are left off in the US because employers are not allowed to consider them. Remove them, along with marital status and a passport number, and use a plain header with name, phone, email, city and a LinkedIn or portfolio link.

  2. Hiding or overstating work authorization

Leaving it off wastes everyone's time; claiming you will not need sponsorship when you will ends an offer badly. Write the facts: visa type, OPT months available, the STEM extension if your degree qualifies, and that sponsorship would be needed later.

  3. A two-page resume for an entry-level role

The multi-page CV common at home reads as unfocused here. One US letter page with education on top, experience in reverse order and a skills block is what a US recruiter expects from a student.

  4. Foreign degree names left untranslated

Licenciatura, Diplom or B.Tech mean little to a US screener. Give the US equivalent first, the original in parentheses, and note the program length if it was longer than four years.

  5. Writing fluent English in the skills list

The resume itself is the test, and a line claiming fluency invites doubt. Show it through a test score, a degree taught in English or a US internship, and keep the prose clean.

  6. Listing experience from home without context

A company well known in your country may be unknown here. Add a short descriptor after the employer name, such as a regional bank or a 200-person software firm, so the reader can weigh it.

Questions about the international student resume

How do I state my work authorization on a resume?

One line in the summary or near the contact block: F-1 student, eligible for 12 months of OPT from the month after graduation, plus a 24-month STEM extension if your degree qualifies, and whether you will need sponsorship afterward. Keep it factual and do not explain visa law.

Should I put CPT or OPT in the job title?

Adding (CPT) after an internship title is common and tells the recruiter the work was authorized. Mention OPT in the authorization line rather than in a title, since the job you are applying for is the one that would use it.

Do I include a photo on a US resume?

No. Leave off the photo, your date of birth, nationality, gender and marital status. US employers expect none of them, and some applicant systems reject resumes that include a photo.

How do I list a degree from my home country?

Write the US equivalent degree name, then the original in parentheses, the school, the city and country, and the year. If the program was five years or included a thesis, say so in the detail line.

Should I list my TOEFL or IELTS score?

A high score belongs in the skills list as evidence, as in the Sample. Once you have a US degree and a US internship, you can drop it, since those prove the point.

Can I use my full name if it is long or unfamiliar in the US?

Use the name on your documents so the offer paperwork matches, and add a preferred short name in parentheses if you use one. Make sure the email address matches the name on the page.

Every application goes out fitting the job.
