Mistakes that cost research assistant interviews

  1. Methods listed without scale

    Ran participant sessions tells a PI nothing about experience. Give the number of sessions, participants, samples or trials you handled, and the retention or enrollment figures when you have them.

  2. No software

    Most research assistant postings name REDCap, R, SPSS, Qualtrics or a lab instrument. List what you have used and what you did with it, not just the names.

  3. Publications and posters missing or vague

    Any paper, poster or talk with your name goes on the page with the authorship position, the venue and the year. It is the clearest evidence of contribution.

  4. Coursework padding the experience section

    Research methods and statistics classes belong under education. Keep the experience section for labs, jobs and independent projects where you produced something.

  5. Hiding the graduate school plan

    PIs expect assistants to leave for graduate programs. Being open about your timeline builds trust, and many labs prefer a committed two years to an uncertain five.
