Social Worker Resume Example

Social work hiring managers read for license level first, then population and setting, then whether your caseload numbers and outcomes hold up. Make your MSW and your LCSW or LMSW status visible in the headline, name the population and setting of each role, and give the caseload size and the results your agency reported to its funders.

The Sample resume below is for a licensed clinical social worker with seven years in Washington, moving from a community behavioral health agency into an integrated primary care clinic. The bullets show caseload, the modalities used, discharge and follow-up outcomes, crisis work, supervision of interns and documentation that survived audits, which is the evidence a clinical director or program manager weighs.

Adjust the emphasis for the setting you want. Hospital and hospice roles want discharge planning and family meetings; child welfare wants investigations, court reports and safety planning; schools want IEP involvement and group work; private practice and telehealth want modalities, insurance paneling and outcome measures. The case manager example and the counselor example cover neighboring roles, and the Civic template suits public agency and hospital application systems.

How the resume changes with experience

The same social worker resume, written at three levels: a summary and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first role in the title

MSW graduate with an LMSW or associate license, two field placements totaling 1,000 hours in a hospital and a youth shelter, and a year as a residential counselor. Seeking a first clinical role under supervision toward independent licensure.

  • Carried a supervised caseload of twelve adolescents at a youth shelter placement, completing intake assessments and weekly sessions.
  • Reunified or placed all twelve with a stable housing plan by the end of the placement.
  • Requested a hospital placement for the second year to learn discharge planning rather than repeating a familiar setting.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Licensed clinical social worker with five years in hospital social work, covering medical, oncology and emergency units with a daily census of about 20 patients.

  • Complete psychosocial assessments and discharge plans for about 20 inpatients a day across two units.
  • Cut average discharge delays for patients going to skilled nursing by a day through an earlier referral checklist.
  • Led a family meeting to move a patient to hospice against initial physician reluctance, which the ethics committee later endorsed.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programs

Clinical director with thirteen years in behavioral health, leading a department of 24 clinicians and case managers across three programs with a $4M grant and billing budget.

  • Direct outpatient, crisis and school-based programs serving about 1,800 clients a year.
  • Raised clinician retention through a supervision model that cut caseloads to a documented maximum.
  • Declined a grant that would have expanded services without funding supervision, and won a smaller grant that did.

Skills to put on the social worker resume

Hard skills

Clinical assessment and diagnosis
Agencies bill on it and audit it, and directors want clinicians whose assessments stand up.
Evidence-based modalities
Postings name CBT, DBT, EMDR or motivational interviewing, and naming the ones you are trained in matches you to the role.
Crisis intervention and safety planning
Every setting has crises, and a clinician who handles them calmly protects clients and the agency.
Documentation and treatment planning
Chart audits determine whether the agency gets paid, and clean documentation is a hiring priority.
Care coordination
Clients have housing, medical and legal needs, and outcomes improve when the social worker connects the pieces.
Outcome measurement
Funders want PHQ-9, GAD-7 and program outcome data, and clinicians who track them make the program look good.
Licensure at the right level
LCSW-level licensure allows independent practice and billing, and it decides which postings you qualify for.

Soft skills

Boundaries and self-care
Burnout drives turnover, and directors hire clinicians who show they can sustain the work.
Cultural humility
Clients come from every background, and agencies serving diverse communities screen for it in interviews.
Advocacy
Getting a client housing or benefits often means pushing another system, and that skill is part of the job.
Collaboration across disciplines
Social workers sit between medicine, law and education, and the ones who work well with all of them get the referrals.

Mistakes that cost social worker interviews

  1. License level unclear

LMSW, LCSW, LICSW and LSW mean different things, and the difference decides whether you can bill independently. State the exact credential, the state and the year in your headline and credentials section.

  2. No caseload or population

Provided therapy tells a director nothing about scale. Give the caseload size, the population, the setting and the modalities so they can picture your day.

  3. Outcomes left out

Screen score changes, hospitalization rates, housing placements, reunifications and audit results are the outcomes agencies report. Use the ones your program tracked.

  4. Clinical jargon with no plain language

A resume that reads like a progress note is hard to skim. Write the way you would explain your work to a new hire, and save the diagnostic detail for the interview.

  5. Skipping supervision and training given

Supervising interns, leading case consultation and training staff show readiness for senior roles, and directors value clinicians who can develop others.

Questions about the social worker resume

How do I list my social work license on a resume?

In the headline after your degree, such as MSW, LCSW, and in a credentials section with the state, license type and year. If you are working toward clinical licensure, write the associate license and the hours completed toward independent licensure.

Should I include my field placements after graduation?

Yes for the first two or three years, listed under education or as a clinical experience section with the setting, population and hours. After that, remove them unless one is directly relevant to the posting.

How do I show results in social work without violating confidentiality?

Use aggregate numbers and program measures: caseload size, average screen score change, share of clients housed or reunified, audit outcomes and referral response times. Never describe an identifiable client.

What is the difference between a case manager and a social worker resume?

A case management resume centers on coordination, benefits and linkage; a clinical social work resume centers on assessment, diagnosis, treatment and licensure. Many social workers do both, so order the bullets by what the posting asks for.

How long should a social worker resume be?

One page for new graduates and early clinicians, two pages for licensed clinicians with supervision, program or grant responsibilities.

Every application goes out fitting the job.
