Video Editor Resume Example

Video editors get hired on their reel, then on whether they can be trusted with a deadline and a difficult producer. The resume should back up the reel with formats, turnaround times, software and the results of the work.

The Sample resume below belongs to a video editor with six years across a post-production house and a digital media network. Each bullet names the format (commercial spots, documentary series, short-form social), the scale of the job and a result: episodes delivered, viewer retention, turnaround time or client renewals. The reel link sits in the header, next to the contact details.

Shape the page to the kind of editing you want next. Commercial and agency work rewards speed, polish and client handling; long-form documentary work rewards story structure and patience with hundreds of hours of footage; social teams want hooks, captions and retention graphs. If you also shoot, the photographer example shows how to present camera work. The Origin template gives a reel link and a tools line clear space.

How the resume changes with experience

The same video editor resume, written at three levels: a summary and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first role in the title

Film graduate and assistant editor with a year of experience logging footage, syncing dailies and cutting social versions of longer projects.

  • Synced and organized dailies for a feature documentary with four camera formats.
  • Cut vertical social trailers for three festival films, each approved by the director.
  • Prepared turnovers for sound and color, checking every file against the delivery specs.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Video editor with four years of experience cutting branded and social video, owning projects from ingest to final delivery.

  • Own the edit on a weekly branded series for a consumer client.
  • Cut campaign spots and social versions from the same shoot, delivered on one schedule.
  • Keep media organized so another editor can pick up any project mid-way.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programs

Senior editor with twelve years of experience leading long-form documentary and commercial post, supervising assistant editors and working directly with directors and showrunners.

  • Lead editor on a feature documentary that premiered at a major festival and sold to a streaming service.
  • Supervise a post team of three assistant editors across two concurrent series.
  • Set the post workflow and budget for new series with the producer before production starts.

Skills to put on the video editor resume

Hard skills

Premiere Pro, Avid or Resolve
Post houses and networks run on specific software, and postings usually name the one you must know on the first day.
Story and pacing
Directors hire editors who can find the story in the footage, which is what the interview conversation usually centers on.
Color and sound basics
Smaller teams expect editors to finish a piece, and a clean grade and mix make your cuts look ready to air.
Motion graphics and titles
Short-form and branded work often needs lower thirds and titles, and editors who can make them save the team a handoff.
Media management and delivery
Lost files and wrong specs cost days, so organized projects and clean deliveries are valued at every level.
Platform formats and retention data
Social teams judge edits by how long people watch, and editors who read those numbers get more responsibility.

Soft skills

Working with directors and clients
Much of editing happens in review, and staying calm while taking notes keeps projects moving.
Speed under deadline
Commercial and news-style schedules are tight, and editors are rebooked for fast, reliable turnarounds.
Attention to detail
A single frame of black or a mistyped name can reach air, and careful editors catch it first.

Mistakes that cost video editor interviews

  1. A reel link that is hard to find

Put your reel address in the header on its own line. If it takes more than a few seconds to find, some reviewers will move on without watching.

  2. Listing software instead of work

Knowing Premiere Pro is a requirement, not an achievement. Use the bullets for what you cut, how fast, for whom and what happened after it aired.

  3. Leaving out turnaround times

Post schedules are the job. First cuts in two days, a series delivered on schedule, same-day revisions: these are the details producers want to see.

  4. No sense of scale

Say how much footage, how many episodes, how many spots a month. A four-part series from hundreds of hours of footage reads very differently from a single promo.

  5. Blurring your role on big projects

Say whether you were the lead editor, an additional editor or an assistant. Precision builds trust, and people in post will ask.

Questions about the video editor resume

Should a video editor resume include a reel?

Always include a link to one. Keep it short, lead with your strongest recent work and make sure the link works without a login.

How long should a video editor's reel be?

About one to two minutes for a general reel. Add separate links for full pieces, such as a documentary episode, if the role calls for long-form editing.

How do I show results as a video editor?

Use what the client or channel measured: views, watch time, retention, a campaign that ran nationally, a series renewed. Where there is no data, show scale and speed.

Should I list freelance edits separately?

Group freelance work under one entry with dates, then list the most relevant projects as bullets. That keeps the page tidy and shows steady work.

Is an assistant editor resume different?

Yes. It focuses on organization, syncing, turnovers and technical accuracy rather than storytelling. The entry-level variant above shows the kind of lines that fit.
