An HR manager is often hired by an operations leader or a chief people officer, and both look first for two facts: whether you hold a recognized HR certification, and how large a workforce you have supported. Many postings for this title list SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR or SPHR as preferred or required, so this template places Certifications directly below the summary, where a screener checking for it will find it at once.

Experience follows, and each role heading carries the employee count and the number of sites. The bullets ask which stages of employment you ran and how the results moved because of you: turnover, time to fill, benefits cost, investigations, compliance findings, training completion. Skills come next, grouped into areas of practice, compliance and systems, then education.

HR work involves confidential information. Write cases as types and counts, never with names or identifying detail, and describe policy changes by their effect. The human resources manager resume example shows each section completed; the recruiter resume template is closer if your work is mostly talent acquisition.

Updated .

How to fill in each section

  1. Summary: workforce, lifecycle, one change

Open with how many employees you support and where, since a single plant and a multi-state workforce need different experience. Name the lifecycle areas you own. Then give one result you can explain with numbers, ideally turnover, retention or a compliance outcome. If the posting describes a first HR hire at a growing company, say whether you have built HR from scratch before.

  2. Certifications: credential, year, status

Write the full credential and whether it is active; HR certifications require recertification credits, and screeners notice an expired one. If you are studying for an exam, list it with the planned test date. Add specialist credentials that match the posting, such as benefits or mediation training, but leave out short webinars and one-day seminars.

  3. Experience: workforce size, then what changed

Each heading carries headcount and sites. The bullets follow the parts of the lifecycle you owned: hiring, onboarding, relations, benefits, pay, compliance, exit. For each, give a before and after or a count. Investigations and grievances are strong evidence when described by type and number only. An HRIS rollout or handbook rewrite is a project; give the scope and the result rather than the steps.

  4. Skills: practice areas, compliance, systems

Group skills so a reader can see which parts of HR you can run alone. Employment law knowledge should name its scope: federal, the states you have worked in, unionized or not. List the HRIS and payroll systems you have administered, not only used as an employee. Discretion and judgment are better shown in a case bullet than listed here.

  5. Education: degree, and a master's if relevant

Degree, school and year. HR management postings often accept business, psychology or HR degrees. A master's in HR or an MBA goes on a second line. If you have no degree, the certification near the top carries more weight, which is one more reason it sits there.

Questions about the human resources manager resume template

Should an HR manager list union experience?

Yes, if the posting mentions a unionized workforce or you have handled grievances, bargaining support or contract administration. Add it to the heading of the relevant role and give the number of grievances or agreements involved.

What if I am moving from HR generalist to manager?

Use the generalist role as the main slot and show the manager-level work you already did: investigations you led, a policy you rewrote, a system you implemented, managers you trained. Say in the summary which areas you owned without supervision.

How do I describe layoffs or restructuring?

Factually and with care: the number of positions affected, the notices and compliance steps you managed, and what you did for employees who left and those who stayed. Do not frame it as a cost saving you are proud of; hiring leaders read for judgment.

Can I apply for HR manager roles without SHRM or HRCI certification?

Yes. Many employers hire on experience, especially smaller companies. Delete the Certifications section rather than leaving it empty, and add it back once you earn one. If you are eligible and have booked the exam, a line with the test date helps.

Is it free?

Yes. The Word files and the Google Docs copy are free to download, edit and use for any application. There is no signup and no email.

Will it read correctly in an applicant tracking system?

The layout is one column with standard headings and real text: no tables, text boxes, icons, columns or images, which are the parts parsers most often misread. Keep it that way as you edit.

Word or Google Docs?

Use whichever you edit in. The Word file opens in Microsoft Word, Pages and LibreOffice. The Google Docs link asks you to make a copy in your own Drive; the original stays blank for the next person. Send the posting the format it asks for, usually .docx or PDF.

Every application goes out fitting the job.
