Retail Assistant CV Example (Ireland)

Irish retailers advertise the same job under two names, Retail Assistant and Sales Assistant, and the person reading your CV is usually the store manager or a supervisor rather than a recruiter. They are filling a rota, so they want to know which days and hours you can do, whether you have the Manual Handling certificate and HACCP training that Irish stores are required to keep on file, and whether you can be trusted with the till, with age-restricted sales and with a customer who is in a hurry. A CV that puts those four things on the first half of the page gets the call for a trial shift.

The Sample CV below is for a Retail Assistant in Drogheda with three years across a community pharmacy's front of shop and a supermarket deli, working part-time around a QQI course. Its bullets name the counters she has run, the stock and ordering systems she uses, the refusals she has logged under the age-restricted rules and the small sales numbers a pharmacy or a deli actually tracks: basket add-ons, waste against target, loyalty sign-ups.

Tailor it to the shop. A pharmacy wants discretion, over-the-counter knowledge within the limits a pharmacist sets, and a cosmetics counter; a supermarket wants deli and fresh standards, speed at the till and weekend cover; a fashion store wants fitting-room service and visual merchandising. The US counterpart of this page is the sales associate resume example, written for American stores and the commission structures they use; an Irish Retail Assistant CV fits one side of A4 and the Brief template keeps it that short.

Updated . The person and employers in this Sample CV are fictional. Written for applicants in Ireland; the page for applicants in the US is the sales associate resume example.

How an Irish CV differs

An Irish Retail Assistant CV is a one-page document written for a store manager who will read it on a phone between deliveries. Most chains recruit through their own careers portal or JobsIreland, often with a short online form, and independent shops still take a CV handed in over the counter with a quick word. The page carries your availability, your Leaving Certificate or QQI qualification, the training certificates Irish stores are required to keep on file, and two referees who are usually a previous supervisor and a teacher or tutor for a first job.

For a retail assistant in Ireland

  1. Retail Assistant and Sales Assistant are the same job

Discounters, pharmacies and some supermarket chains advertise Retail Assistant; fashion, phone and department stores say Sales Assistant. Use whichever the advert uses in your headline, and list the other in your skills so the portal's search finds you either way.

  2. Manual Handling and HACCP on the page

Irish employers are expected to have manual handling training recorded for staff who lift stock, and a food counter needs HACCP training. Both are short courses; list them with the year and the provider, because a manager who sees them can put you on the floor sooner.

  3. Availability by day, not just hours

Rotas in Irish retail are built by day. Write the days and the hours you can cover, say whether you can do late-night Thursdays and Sundays, and note that you are available for extra hours in December.

  4. Age-restricted products and the refusal log

Alcohol, tobacco, vapes and the National Lottery all have age limits, and paracetamol has a pack limit in pharmacies. Mention that you log refusals and know the Challenge 21 or Challenge 25 routine your store used.

  5. The Leaving Certificate and QQI

List the Leaving Certificate with the subjects that matter to a shop, usually English, Maths and Business. A QQI Level 5 in Retail Practice or a retail apprenticeship is the recognised next step and worth stating even if it is still in progress.

Every CV in Ireland

A4 paper
The page is A4. Irish employers print and file on A4, and a Letter-sized PDF is the first sign a CV was written for the US.
Two pages is normal
Two pages is the norm for an Irish CV. Graduates fit one; nobody needs three unless the role is senior.
No photo
No photo, date of birth or marital status. Irish employers do not ask for them, and leaving them off keeps the page about the work.
Dates as DD/MM/YYYY
Day, month, year where a full date appears; month and year for each role. The US month-first order confuses the reader.
Irish English
Irish English follows British spelling: organise, programme, centre, licence, specialise.
Town or Dublin postal district, not a street address
"Dublin 8" or "Cork" is enough on the contact line. A full address is not expected, and the US-style "City, ST 12345" line never is.

How the CV changes with experience

The same retail assistant CV, written at three levels: a profile and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first post in the title

Leaving Certificate student looking for a first part-time Retail Assistant post, with Transition Year work experience in a shoe shop and two summers helping on a family market stall.

  • Served customers and handled cash on a Saturday market stall for two summers, counting the float and takings each day.
  • Completed a week of Transition Year work experience in a shoe shop, learning sizing, stockroom checks and the till.
  • Can work Saturdays, Sundays and three evenings a week during term and full-time over the summer.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Retail Assistant with four years in a fashion and footwear store, now a keyholder who runs the fitting rooms, the weekly floor set and the Saturday team of six.

  • Open and close the store two days a week, including cash-up, the alarm and the end-of-day report.
  • Lead the Saturday floor team and the seasonal changeover of the window and front tables.
  • Took the highest number of loyalty sign-ups in the store for three months in a row.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programmes

Senior Retail Assistant and supervisor in a large pharmacy group, responsible for the front-of-shop team of eight, the cosmetics counters and the store's planogram compliance.

  • Write the weekly rota for eight retail assistants and cover supervisor duties when the store manager is off.
  • Run the quarterly planogram reset and the counter promotions with the group's merchandising team.
  • Train new starters on age-restricted sales, refusals and the front-of-shop limits on medicine advice.

Skills to put on the retail assistant CV

Hard skills

Till and cash handling
Every Irish shop asks about floats, lodgements and discrepancies at interview, and a clean cash record is the first thing a manager checks with your referee.
Age-restricted sales
Alcohol, tobacco, vapes, lottery and certain medicines all have legal age limits, and a store can lose its licence over one sale, so managers want to see you know the refusal routine.
Manual Handling certificate
Irish employers are expected to have manual handling training on file for anyone lifting stock, and arriving with a current certificate saves them a course.
HACCP food safety
Any counter that serves food runs on HACCP records, and a candidate who already keeps them can start on the deli without supervision.
Stock rotation and expiry checks
Waste is the number a supermarket or pharmacy manager is measured on most weeks, and rotation is how a retail assistant moves it.
Product counters
Cosmetics, deli, bakery, phones: naming the counter you have run tells a manager where to put you on day one.
Loyalty schemes and add-on sales
Sign-ups and basket size are simple numbers a retail assistant can own, and they separate your CV from one that only lists duties.

Soft skills

Reliability on a rota
A part-time retail assistant who turns up for every rostered shift is worth more to a manager than a brilliant one who swaps every weekend.
Patience with customers
Pharmacy and supermarket customers are often unwell, elderly or rushed, and the way you handle a queue is noticed on a trial shift.
Honesty
You will handle cash, refunds and restricted products, and a manager hires on trust as much as skill.
Working alongside a pharmacist or supervisor
Knowing when a question is yours to answer and when to hand it over keeps the shop compliant and the customer safe.

Mistakes that cost retail assistant interviews

  1. No days or hours on the CV

The manager is filling specific gaps in a rota. A CV that does not say which days you can work goes to the bottom of the pile however good the rest of it is. Put your availability in the profile line and again under skills.

  2. Describing the job instead of the shop

Served customers and restocked shelves could be any shop in the country. Say what kind of store it was, which counter or department you worked, how busy it got and what you were trusted with alone.

  3. Leaving out the certificates

Manual handling, HACCP and responsible retailing training sit in a drawer at most stores and the manager has to arrange them for a new starter. If you already have them, say so with the year; it is one less job for the person hiring you.

  4. Giving medicine advice on a pharmacy CV

A retail assistant in an Irish pharmacy sells over-the-counter products but does not advise on them; the pharmacist and the technician do. Write that you refer queries correctly, not that you recommend treatments, or the supervising pharmacist will wonder what you have been doing.

  5. A two-page CV for a part-time post

A student or a first-time applicant does not need two pages. One side of A4 with your availability, your shop experience, your Leaving Certificate and your certificates is what a store manager expects and will actually read.

  6. Copying an American sales associate page

Commission, upselling targets and a Letter-sized layout belong to the US page this one pairs with. An Irish Retail Assistant CV talks about the rota, the counters, waste and compliance, because that is what the store is run on.

Write bullets with the XYZ formula: what changed, the number that shows it, and how you did it, in one line.

Questions about the retail assistant CV

What should I put on a Retail Assistant CV with no experience?

Your Leaving Certificate or current course, any Transition Year work experience, babysitting, sports coaching or family business work that shows reliability and cash handling, and a clear line on the days and hours you can work. Add a Manual Handling certificate if you can get one before you apply; some training centres run them in an afternoon.

Do I need a Manual Handling certificate to work in a shop in Ireland?

Most retailers arrange it in the first weeks, because they are expected to have the training recorded for anyone lifting stock. Having it already is not a requirement to apply, but it is a real advantage on a CV because the manager can put you straight onto deliveries and replenishment.

Is a Sales Assistant the same as a Retail Assistant in Ireland?

Yes. The two titles describe the same job and the choice depends on the retailer. Match the advert's title in your headline and mention the other in your skills list so the careers portal matches you to both.

Should I include my Leaving Certificate results?

List the subjects, not the grades, unless the advert asks for a minimum. English, Maths and Business are the ones a store manager notices. If you have moved on to a QQI course or a degree, put that first and keep the Leaving Certificate to one line.

How do I show sales on a CV for a supermarket or pharmacy?

Use the small numbers those shops track: loyalty card sign-ups, add-on sales at the counter, deli waste against target, how many customers you serve in a peak hour. They are real results, and they read better than a vague claim to have exceeded targets.

How do I tailor the CV for each shop?

Read the advert and move the matching counter or department to the top of your most recent job, then change the headline to the title it uses. Resume Master does this in one pass when you paste the advert in: it rewrites the headline and bullets around what that store is asking for and keeps the CV to one page.
